Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Clive? Don't Start It

With the tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet run, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is settled in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that got in. All over Clive and the rest of Cheshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Ring us and our engineers shall show you what happens next before you do any more.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — fine enough for a couple of miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start it. And once started, never trust it: the fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Flicking the car's ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition be.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes — so don't pour diesel on top to dilute it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We'd rather come to a difficult place than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to handle than a car that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Hewitt Drive, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.
  • The van turning up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting CW7 3, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Have both ready before you ring.
  • What was put in, roughly how much, and also if the motor has started — the three answers settle the entire job. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Quarter past eight, a fast fill-up on the trip in, and it dawns on you close to eleven — by then your diesel Volkswagen Passat has been left at Winsford for three hours. Phone us and keep it right where it sits. The run in is the bit that counts most, as diesel does two roles on its way through the engine: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases its injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were covered with your pump working on a liquid that had given up most of the protection it is made for — which is why the question our technicians ask is how many miles you went, not how long your car has been sitting.

Car parks like the one outside Co-op are somewhere we work in frequently, and your fuel is seldom the tricky part. The bay is: cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit on the way in that settles if our van can access you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you phone, and which way your car is pointing. Where our engineers can't work beside the diesel BMW 3 Series we will shift the vehicle without firing it — and that isn't fussiness about a couple of seconds of running. Every start primes the fuel system and pulls more of that mix out of that tank and on to your pump, and so a vehicle shuffled twice into a better bay has silently turned into a harder job than one left just where it stopped.

The parts that should be getting lubricated are wearing down instead, and the motor gives no sign of it: a diesel on a weakened tank fires up and drives off just fine. Chance the trip home from Brighton Belle (Hungry Horse)? No. Phone us then leave the Mercedes C-Class where it sits.

Happy on the way out, flat on the way back. If that's how the drive to Stanthorne Play Area went, that tank is where to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and weaker fuel seeps past the precision parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the farther your Dacia Duster travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off then ring us.

What occurs next is the issue. The engine immediately pulls the petrol left resting in the fuel filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put fresh diesel in, someone sure of themselves will tell you — and that suggestion is half true, as do it to a diesel Kia Sportage parked up, Wharton Library say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Phone us instead. Our technicians flush the circuit and take the fuel filter off where the vehicle has a serviceable one, and that is the difference between your car being fixed and your car only starting.

On the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

It kicks off at the pump, typically. Often enough the work ends there as well. If you're still at the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that's generally where the drain happens — we work on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement.

At the forecourt, this gets caught with your engine never started, and nowhere else does it. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where the car is.

Staff will usually pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next customer get by. Take the offer. Cranking the car just to move four vehicle lengths isn't.

Places our vans serve near Clive

Clive Green, Gravel, Stanthorne, Wharton, Manor Park — all of them on our trips that bring us over to Clive too, a residential suburb.

Our technicians do come. The names above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for most locations in Cheshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. On a border, or anywhere your phone gets wrong? Contact us and check instead of assuming.

That map is the area this page includes. Your car doesn't need to come to us. We operate across the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Kerbside call-outs around Clive

The opportunity to pull over somewhere safe does not fall to everybody. If you noticed after setting off and landed by the verge beside Seaton Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that's a common call for us and not a rare one.

Fine there? Wait beside it. Not okay? Get out and clear of it. Do not fire up your motor to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into your fuel system. However tricky the location, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that is far better for the vehicle than driving on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 5 miles out of Clive, the M6 is what matters here. A misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they appear are typically a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a clean stop.

Do not start it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible exit and switch off. Long drive? Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the call, as it alters what goes in the van.

All about Clive

Clive is a small suburban area in Cheshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 46 metres. Clive lies near the village of Clive Green and other nearby places such as Gravel and Stanthorne. Clive has a population of around 685 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing. Clive is located approximately 16.9 miles from Chester and 152.9 miles from London.

What follows when our engineers get to you in Clive

  • Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Your tank is cleared of it.
  • What is left in the system shouldn't be what created the issue, and so the lines get cleaned and the fuel filter cleared.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • When it is turned on, we check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

After that it's ready to drive away. There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted early, permanent damage is very rare.

Clive AdBlue removal is a separate matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas the issue underneath it's a distinct one altogether. The protection a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which thins the diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and residue.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Clive has its own page with the full story — including why it's often the more serious of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Clive?

What shifts the figure is listed below, because the job is not one job and we can't honestly put a single price on this page.

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for a technician.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Clive motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Clive petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this gets done. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Morrisons, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our technicians answer there and then.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture drawn through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It's recoverable much more regularly than motorists fear, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. The pump still has to put up with it, as the tank still has petrol in it after that.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Is your car still with you?

Turned off is the way the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later. Cold and still, a car is in the best place available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Emptying misfilled vehicles, Clive and the rest of Cheshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
