Petrol in a Diesel Car in Clydach
With that tank still holding the petrol and your engine not yet run, almost every job requires only a drain, so leave the motor off. That outcome is settled in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that got in. All over Clydach and the rest of Swansea, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Contact us and then our engineers shall show you what comes next before you try any more.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try now
- Don't start the vehicle — and don't depend on it if it runs. Here is the thing motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel usually just cannot run, so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, ticks over and drives off just fine for a couple of miles. It's not all right. It's eating into that fuel system as you drive.
- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone too: flicking it on is often all it takes to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into precisely those components.
- Don't pour diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely leaves you a fuller tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
- A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to handle, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on High Street? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. An odd place suits us better than a started engine.
- Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode starting SA6 5, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.
- What went in, about how much, and also if the motor has fired — those three replies decide the whole visit. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
The journey back would more or less double it, for no reason at all. One commute has already forced a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Volkswagen Passat. So leave it where it stands. Call us from the platform if that's simpler — nobody needs you standing over the vehicle at Llansamlet while our technicians work, and tonight is better than finding out on Monday.
We're in car parks like the one at Spar a lot, and it is almost never your fuel that complicates them. It is the bay. Vehicles both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height bar at the entrance, which determines if our van can reach you at all. So say how boxed in you are when you phone, and which way the vehicle is pointing. If there is no clearance to work next to your Skoda Octavia, our engineers move it without the motor. That is not fussiness over a couple of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of that tank towards your pump, and a motor moved twice for a better spot is quietly a bigger job than one no one touched.
Twenty to nine. Outside the local primary school. Late already, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Put your hazards on, leave the motor alone, then phone us. You might think three miles is nothing, in your BMW 3 Series or anything else — except that fuel is supplied to demand, and a dash taken in a rush asks for a great deal of it.
None of that is your engine failing. That is the bit worth hearing, and it's why the ordinary Graig-felen Plantation call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Ford Focus drives out there without a murmur, comes back with the power gone, your idle rough and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting components it flows through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure and not only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built escapes past tolerances, delivery shows up poorer and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once the fuel is put right.
Flushed, not cleared — that is what a diesel Peugeot 208 which got as far as Dynamic Rock needs. Running a diesel puts that mix into the fuel filter, your lines, your pump and the rail, none of which empties with the tank, and so by now the tank holds the smaller part of the damage.
Clearing petrol from your diesel on a forecourt
It starts at a forecourt, generally. Quite often it ends at one as well. Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that's generally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the owner.
At the forecourt, this gets caught with your engine never run, and no place else does that. Our engineers can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and driven there, and that drew fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past that tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the keys are what settle that.
Push it out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they generally will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.
Will our technicians serve your corner of Clydach?
Clydach is a small village, so we go out to it and to the areas near it on those same runs: Mount Pleasant, Aber-Clydach, Faerdre, Caer-graig and Graigfelen.
There are separate pages for most towns in Swansea, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from this list means nothing whatsoever about if we come. On a boundary, or somewhere the satnav misreads? Call us to enquire instead of presuming.
The area this page covers appears on the map. Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us.
Stranded at the roadside somewhere around Clydach?
Not everyone gets a safe place to pull in. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Sybil Street because you realised after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it's the ordinary kind.
Out of the vehicle while it is not wise to be inside, with it if it is. Don't start it up to reach a safer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into the fuel system. However awkward the location, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that is much better for your car than pressing on.
Driven it already? Pull over, and check this
This is where the M4 comes in — under 3 miles from Clydach. Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.
Never start it to move it. Get off at the first safe exit then turn off. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you call. It affects what our technicians bring.
Clydach itself
Clydach is a locality situated on the River Tawe in Swansea, with a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities. Clydach lies close to the nearby communities of Mount Pleasant and Aber-Clydach, and is located near the village of Faerdre. Clydach has a population of around 1784 people and is approximately 5.6 miles from Swansea city centre. Clydach is set in a riverside location at an elevation of 28 metres, providing a distinctive setting for the area.
What our technicians do when our engineers arrive with you in Clydach
- Our technicians ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers alter what the work really is.
- Our technicians empty the tank of all the contaminated mixture.
- Our technicians purge the fuel lines and clear the filter, and so what's remaining in your system isn't what caused the problem.
- Our engineers pour fresh diesel in and prime your system.
- The motor is started and checked to be sure it runs properly on new diesel.
From there, you are ready to set off. There is no need for a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is spotted soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Clydach is a different matter
The fault is not the same, though the first instruction is — never fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and residue in its place.
Both are ours. There's a separate Clydach page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
Clydach pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
One price wouldn't be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.
- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where the vehicle is, and if a van can sensibly reach and work on it.
Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.
Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Clydach
Fuel drains on a Clydach petrol station forecourt
Plenty of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's agreement our technicians attend Asda and the other forecourts locally regularly.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car
Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then leave the vehicle off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable much more commonly than people expect.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle turned off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate problem and it doesn't put back what petrol has thinned. The pump still has to put up with it, as that tank still has petrol in it after that.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.
Is your car still with you?
Shut off is the way it remains.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car afterwards. Cold and still, a motor is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
