Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Coal Pool

If you have not started the engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still inside your tank and the engine has not run, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has stopped in Coal Pool or the rest of West Midlands, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. A single ring our way will be sufficient: our technicians shall explain what follows after this. Do that first.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Never start the vehicle. Fired up anyway? Then never believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally won't run, and so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off normally, for several miles. Motorists get that muddled. It's not fine — that fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.
  • Switching your ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of your tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to handle, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Cartbridge Crescent? Hazards on, then leave it there. A tricky location works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Before you call, have your position. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting WS3 1 — that's what determines whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • What got in, roughly how much, plus whether the motor has fired — these three facts settle your whole job. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Quarter past eight, a hurried fill on the road in, and it dawns on you somewhere around eleven — by that point your diesel BMW 3 Series has been parked outside Walsall for three hours. Phone then keep it precisely where it is. The trip in is the part that is key here, since diesel has two jobs on its way through the engine: it burns, and before it burns it protects its high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. So those few miles were done with your pump running on a liquid that had given up much of the protection it is designed around — which is why the thing our technicians ask is how many miles you travelled, not how long your car has been stood.

We will get to you, empty that tank, flush those fuel lines then put fresh diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into your diesel Audi A4 around Coal Pool and you're sat at Heron Foods with a boot loaded with shopping, phone — and do not crank it a second time to exit the space. A mile or so at light throttle draws little fuel, so these are often the simple ones.

You set off at the end, once our technicians have fired it up and confirmed it runs smoothly on clean diesel, with the system bled. Before that, in the car park outside Horse & Jockey, the tainted fuel comes out of your tank, your lines get rinsed and the fuel filter comes off where your Mercedes C-Class has a serviceable one. Everything begins with three questions when we reach the vehicle: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

Normal on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that's how that run to Black Country Millennium Forest went, the tank is the place to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and weaker fuel leaks past the close-fitting components that are meant to build injection pressure — so the further your Dacia Duster drove, the less well it held that pressure. Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off and ring us.

Why we're direct about not driving on: the pump waits ahead of the injectors, and so whatever a worn pump sheds travels downstream with your fuel. Leave the Peugeot 3008 near Saint Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Church and phone us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Coal Pool

On a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

Forecourts are where this work usually begins, and where a good part of that closes. The drain usually takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Asda? Given the site's consent, that is a spot our technicians work, and routinely.

Before the motor has started — a forecourt is the only setting this ends up spotted. Our engineers can still deal with it where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been started and driven there, and that pulled fuel through your filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to reach past your tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.

Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get by. Take the assistance. Four car lengths is not worth a start.

Parts we reach near Coal Pool

Coal Pool is a residential suburb, and so we are out to the town and to the places near it on those same runs: Harden, Rushall, Ryecroft, Goscote and Daw End.

Our engineers do come. The places above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page is there for most towns around West Midlands, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. On a boundary, or somewhere your satnav misreads? Call us and ask instead of assuming.

The map shows the ground the page covers. Every bit of that is territory we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't drive the car anywhere.

Roadside call-outs in Coal Pool

A chance to stop somewhere suitable does not fall to everybody. A common call for us rather than a rare one: noticed after setting off, ended up on the verge beside Whateley Avenue or at a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Stay with the motor if it is safe to wait there, and clear of it if it is not. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere better and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. We will bring our van to an awkward location without any trouble, and for your car that is a lot better than driving on.

Run it already? Stop, and see this

under 3 miles out of Coal Pool, the M6 is what matters here. Lost power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long run? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the petrol. Say that on the phone, since it affects what goes in the van.

Our job in Coal Pool, step by step

  • The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of that, and if your motor has run.
  • The tainted mixture is pulled out of the tank.
  • What is remaining in your system should not be what caused the issue, so your fuel lines get rinsed and your filter cleared.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • The engine is fired up and tested to confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. We do everything wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Coal Pool?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — while the problem underneath it's a distinct one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and residue.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Coal Pool page. Both are ours to handle.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Coal Pool

What changes the price is set out below, since the job is not one job and we can't frankly put a single number on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for our van.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Coal Pool

Fuel drains on a Coal Pool petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a big share of this work takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's consent our technicians visit Shelfield Service Station and the other forecourts around town all the time.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable far more often than people fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, because we drain and clean your car wherever it is.

Is the car still with you?

Leave the engine turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it after that. A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than drivers fear.

Throughout West Midlands and around Coal Pool: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
