Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cockerton?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over Cockerton and the rest of Durham. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When the motor has not yet turned over and the petrol is still in the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Phone before all else begins, and you'll know what comes after that.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for several miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't crank it. And if started, never rely on it: your fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Leave the ignition be too. Diesel has two tasks: it combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates that high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning the ignition on is often all it takes to prime that system, which draws that petrol out of that tank then into just those parts.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Our team would much rather travel to an odd location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is easier to deal with than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Hill Garth, that means hazards on then keep the car.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode that starts DL3 9, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.
  • Three details decide the whole call-out: the fuel you put in, the ballpark amount of it, and if it has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Can petrol be taken from your diesel at the forecourt?

It kicks off at the pump, usually. Often enough it ends at one as well. Still at Shell? Then that's generally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the site.

Before your engine has run — the forecourt is the single setting it gets spotted. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key settle how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank. It's not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where the vehicle stands.

Roll the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets through the pump, and that's worth doing. Starting it just for four vehicle lengths? Never.

We will come out to you, empty the tank, rinse those fuel lines then put fresh diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into the diesel Renault Megane in Cockerton and you're stranded outside Heron Foods with a boot loaded with shopping, phone us — and do not crank it a second time to leave the space. A mile or so at easy throttle draws very little fuel, which is why those tend to be the straightforward jobs.

Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and usually it will not run, and so the driver stops there and the harm stops with them. Flip it — petrol into a diesel — and the car fires up, idles and drives off as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump works without the protection your fuel is supposed to be giving. That is the catch, and it is why your diesel BMW 3 Series will have seemed completely ordinary coming back from St Mary's Cockerton Church of England Primary School. They all do. From behind the wheel there's nothing to caution you about, and so nothing tells you. Phone us with about how far you travelled, and how hard; the second one counts more than the first.

It will fire up. It will move off perfectly well. That is the problem, as a diesel on a thinned tank behaves generally whilst wearing the components its fuel should be protecting. So no, don't risk the trip home from Travellers Rest — leave the Nissan Qashqai then ring us.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision components it passes through, and petrol weakens it. That is the entire mechanism, and it explains the ordinary Cockerton Green call: a diesel Mercedes E-Class that travelled out there without complaint and came back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs your fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when your fuel weakens, pressure that should build and stay built starts bleeding past gaps instead, and the engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed about. No part of that is the engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is sorted.

By this point that tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in the filter, your lines, the pump and its rail — and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Peugeot 208 that made it near Cockerton Methodist needs the system cleared, not cleared.

Will our technicians serve your side of Cockerton?

Cockerton is a residential suburb, so our technicians get out to the town and to the places around it on those same journeys: Pierremont, Branksome, Mowden, Hummersknott and Hope Town.

Not on the list? It means nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and nearly all towns across Durham have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Phone to ask instead of assuming — county lines especially, and anywhere your phone might struggle with.

The patch this page includes appears on this map. Every bit of that is ground our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't bring the car anywhere.

Stranded by the kerb anywhere around Cockerton?

Not everyone has the opportunity to pull in somewhere sensible. A normal call for us instead of an unusual one: noticed after setting off, ended up by the verge beside Newton Lane or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Whether you sit with your car or keep clear of it rests on if being in it is safe. Don't fire it up to get to a better place. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mixture deeper into the system. We'll send our van to an awkward location without any bother, and for the car that's much better than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

The local A1(M) is the one which counts now, and it sits under 3 miles from Cockerton. Lost power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Get off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and do not start it to reposition. Long drive? Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in our van.

What happens when our engineers get to you around Cockerton

  • We check what was put in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses change the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
  • The contaminated fuel is pulled out of the tank.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • Once it is turned on, we make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That has the car ready to drive away. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed quickly, and because all of this is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Cockerton?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — while this issue underneath it is a distinct one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and residue.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Cockerton has its own page with the details — including why it's frequently the more serious of the two.

Cockerton prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our technicians cannot put one number on this page truthfully, because this job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much that tank takes.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a technician.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Petrol in diesel: common queries in Cockerton

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Cockerton?

A large part of this work takes place there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians visit Morrisons and the other forecourts locally routinely.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving takes the trouble along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, emptying and flushing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct issue and it doesn't restore what petrol has weakened. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Standing next to it?

Leave it switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it afterwards. A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than people fear.
