Petrol in Diesel

Collafield: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Collafield and the rest of Gloucestershire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When the engine has not yet been started and the fuel is still in that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much went in. We can tell you what the next move is. Call us — it goes before everything else.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically not run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine enough for a couple of miles. People have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not start it. And once started, do not believe it: the fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Switching the ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of your tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition be.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you safely can. A motor that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort out, and our team would sooner get to an odd spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Forest Rise, switch the hazards on and keep the car there.
  • The van showing up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning GL14 2, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Get both ready before you ring.
  • What got in, roughly how much, and also whether your car has fired — those three facts settle the whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

A good part of this work ends up completed at the pump, because that is where it mostly starts. The drain usually gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at EG on the move? Given the site's consent, that's a spot we work, and often.

Before your engine has run — a forecourt is the one spot this ends up caught. Our technicians can still sort it out where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from that tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key are what decide that.

Away from the petrol pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the car. Very much worth it. Firing it over four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Places our vans serve in Collafield

As a small village, Collafield has a routine call, whilst the areas nearby come along on the same journey: Littledean Hill and Cinderford, Double View and Littledean, Mount Pleasant.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and the majority of locations around Gloucestershire have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Contact us to ask rather than presuming, especially when you're on a border or anywhere a satnav misreads.

This map is the patch this page includes. Our technicians work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and the car doesn't need to travel to us.

Collafield: broken down wherever you parked

Not everyone finds a safe spot to pull over. If you noticed after setting off and landed along the verge on Littledean Hill Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a common call for us and not a rare one.

Okay where you are? Sit by it. Not safe? Step out and away from it. Never start up your motor to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into the system. We will take the van to a tricky location without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is a lot better than carrying on.

Three answers settle most of the work: what went in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for them as soon as we arrive at your car in the car park by The Fern Ticket. Next the contaminated mixture comes out of your tank, the lines are cleaned, and where your Peugeot 308 has a replaceable filter, it comes off. After fresh diesel is in and the system primed, our engineers start the car and confirm it runs correctly before you drive away.

Out there normal, back gutless. If that was the run to Edgehills, look at the tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the tight gaps meant to build injection pressure — so every further mile the diesel Audi A4 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, switch off, call us.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left by Freedom Leisure. For a diesel Ford Focus whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Phone us, then let the vehicle stand with your ignition alone. Short assists, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the lines get purged and not just the tank cleared.

Most of these happen somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical instead of sloppy — practically no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Dacia Duster, a fill-up near Sheltered Housing Scheme that you didn't think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at the injectors.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went soft, your idle turned lumpy, and your diesel Mercedes A-Class is now sitting close to Ow Bist. That deadness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully not your engine failing — and as there's no warning light for it, motors in that position generally get driven again before anybody phones. Don't. Switch it off and phone us.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

This is where the local M50 matters, under 10 miles from Collafield. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer drive — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and tell us when you call. It changes what we bring.

A little about Collafield

Collafield is a locality in Gloucestershire, situated inland at an elevation of 254 metres, approximately 10.6 miles from Gloucester. Collafield lies near the settlements of Littledean Hill, Cinderford, and Double View, in a region of varied landscape. Collafield has a population of around 588 people, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type. Collafield is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of 103.5 miles.

What we do when we get to you around Collafield

  • Our technicians establish what went in, how much, and if your engine has run. The replies shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • Your tank is emptied of everything.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that created the problem.
  • Our engineers put new diesel in and bleed your system.
  • We turn it on and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

After that it is ready to pull away. There's no need for a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

Collafield AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — never start the car — but this problem is not. The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and deposits instead.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Collafield page. Both are ours to handle.

Collafield costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Honestly, no single price fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what moves it:

  • This is the main one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Collafield

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Collafield?

A big portion of this work happens there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Gulf is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable far more often than drivers expect.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out properly is not an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate fault and it does not put back what petrol has weakened. The pump still has to live with it, because your tank still has petrol in it after that.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Never switch your engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later on. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
