Collingwood Chase: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Collingwood Chase and the remainder of Northumberland. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While the engine has not been started and the fuel is still in your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Ring us before everything else starts, and you'll learn what happens after that.
What to do now about petrol in a diesel
- Do not fire it up. Started regardless? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car usually can't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for a couple of miles. People get that confused. It's not okay — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it protects — that injection pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition be also: switching it on is often all it takes to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.
- Never tip diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes, and topping up clears nothing — it just leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- A motor that has never shifted is the quickest one to handle, so wait where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Weetwood Road? Hazards on, and keep the car there. A tricky place suits us better than a started motor.
- Get your position prepared before you dial. A postcode that starts NE23 6 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van arriving and a van circling.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, about how many litres, and also if the engine has run. Those three details shape the whole call-out.
How many miles you travelled is what our technicians care about, not how long the vehicle has been parked — and here's why. Diesel does two jobs on its way through a motor: it combusts, and before burning it greases the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a quick top-up on the trip in, the penny dropping around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf sitting at Cramlington since quarter past eight tells us those couple of miles were covered with your pump labouring on a fluid stripped of a lot of its protection. Phone and leave the car precisely where it sits.
The components that should be getting protected are grinding instead, and the vehicle gives no sign of it: a diesel on a diluted tank starts and pulls away just fine. Chance the drive home from The Bay Horse Inn? Not a chance. Phone then leave the Peugeot 3008 where it is.
Hardly ever the issue, the place. On-street is the commonest location our engineers work, and a tight parking bay is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you call from near Elley Dee's Underpass (Wildspace Network), is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can stand beside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then the Vauxhall Astra gets emptied, the filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the fuel lines cleaned and clean fuel put through the full system — as by now the worst of it is in the fuel lines, not the tank.
New locations are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical not careless: the slimmer petrol nozzle slides into a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Topped up close to Cramlington Bowling Club without thinking, in a diesel Citroen C3 you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody realises, and miles is what decides how much petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.
By this point the tank is not where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, that mix is in the filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Audi Q5 that got close to The Salvation Army needs the system flushed, not emptied.
On a forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel
Pumps are where the job often begins, and where a large share of it finishes. If you are still on the forecourt at Co-op Food, that is typically where the drain happens — our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the site's permission.
The forecourt is the one setting this gets spotted before your motor has run. The few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys decide how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter require cleaning as well as your tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where the vehicle is.
Away from the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you move the vehicle. Worth it. Shifting the car four bays does not merit firing the engine.
Service around Collingwood Chase
Collingwood, Southfield Lea, Klondyke, Southfield Green, Collingwood Grange — each of them on the rounds that bring us over to Collingwood Chase as well, a residential suburb.
We do come. Those names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all places around Northumberland, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Call us and check rather than assuming, particularly where you're on the boundary or anywhere your satnav can't find.
Look at our map for the patch covered here. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is territory our engineers cover, and none of it requires your vehicle to travel to us.
Stuck on the roadside anywhere around Collingwood Chase?
Not everybody finds a decent spot to pull in. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Wishaw Close because you worked it out after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the normal kind.
Fine there? Sit beside it. Not okay? Climb out and clear of it. Never fire up the engine to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mix further into your fuel system. Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than a van heading out to a tricky spot, and that's no trouble for us.
Run it already? Stop, and check this
Your A167(M) is the road that counts now, and it sits under 10 miles from Collingwood Chase. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.
Get off at the next safe exit, turn off, and do not start it to move it. On a longer run — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you call. It alters what our technicians bring.

What happens when our engineers reach you around Collingwood Chase
- The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.
- Away comes the polluted fuel.
- What is remaining in the system should not be what created the issue, so your fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.
- New diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
- It is run with clean diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it's running correctly.
Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been caught quickly, and since all of it is done where the car is, it never has to go to a workshop.
Collingwood Chase AdBlue removal is a different job
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor remains off — while this problem under it's a separate one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.
Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Collingwood Chase page. Both are ours to deal with.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Collingwood Chase?
We cannot put one price on this page truthfully, because the job is not one job. What changes it:
- This is the big one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much your tank can hold.
- The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Whether a van can sensibly get to your car and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.
Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.
Collingwood Chase drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel
Fuel drains on a Collingwood Chase petrol station forecourt
Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this happens. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Sainsbury's is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there's possible.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system.
I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more often than motorists expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. It belongs to a separate issue from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
No. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.
You, and your car, still together?
Switched off is how the car stays.
If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off. A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than people assume.
