Petrol in Diesel

Colwyn Bay: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't turn on your engine. While the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not been started, a drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets decided in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they are, all over Colwyn Bay and the remainder of Conwy, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Our engineers will explain what the next stage is. Ring us — this happens ahead of everything else.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • As you drive, your pump and the injectors wear. That's why you never crank it, and why you do not depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition off also: switching it on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into exactly those components.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A vehicle that has not moved is the quickest one to handle, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Holyrood Avenue? Hazards on, then keep it there. An odd spot works for us better than a started engine.
  • The van arriving rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning LL29 9, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Have both prepared before you ring.
  • What went in, about how much, and also if the car has fired — those three replies decide the entire call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Phone before you drive it. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Golf this morning, and the car at the nearest station ever since? Then the wait has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is dormant, and any wear happened on the run in, when the pump was pulling diesel that petrol had thinned.

None of it is the motor failing. That is the part worth hearing, and it's why the ordinary Min y Don Park call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Mercedes C-Class drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, your idle rough and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision parts it flows through; petrol dilutes it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built leaks past clearances, delivery shows up weaker and later and less even than designed, and all of that stops once your fuel is sorted.

Why we're blunt about not driving on: the pump rests before your injectors, so whatever a wearing pump loses passes on with your fuel. Leave the Audi A3 close to Old Colwyn Community Centre then phone us.

Rattling, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That is a misfuelled diesel Ford Kuga telling you what's wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, near The Barn or anywhere else, and do not start it to find a better place.

By this point your tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, the mix is in the filter, your lines, the pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Citroen C3 that made it by Colwyn Leisure Centre needs your system flushed, not emptied.

Can petrol be pumped from a diesel at the forecourt?

Forecourts are where the work mostly kicks off, and where a good portion of it finishes. The drain usually gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station? Given the station's permission, that's a spot we work, and regularly.

At the forecourt, it is halted with your engine never run, and no place else manages it. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the fuel lines as well as that tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our engineers sort it out where the vehicle stands. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was read.

The attendants will normally help you roll it clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. That is worth doing. Shifting it four spaces doesn't warrant firing the motor.

Parts our vans reach near Colwyn Bay

As a coastal town, Colwyn Bay gets a regular call, and its neighbours close by come along on that same journey: Old Colwyn and Tan-y-Lan, Penmaen Rhos and Llanelian-yn-Rhos, Mynydd Marian.

There are pages for nearly all places around Conwy, and the ones listed above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off the list says nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come. Presuming is the habit to avoid, particularly on a boundary or anywhere a satnav gets lost. Phone to check.

This map marks the patch this page spans. The lot is ground our engineers work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't move the car anywhere.

Stuck by the roadside around Colwyn Bay

The opportunity to pull in somewhere suitable doesn't fall to everybody. A routine call for us and not an unusual one: noticed after setting off, ended up along the verge of Ffordd Llaneilian or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Whether you wait with the vehicle or step away from it turns on if staying nearby is wise. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. We'll bring our van to an inconvenient location without any trouble, and for the car that is far better than driving on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the local Moreton Spur comes into it — under 50 miles away from Colwyn Bay. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they come are normally lost power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer run — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and say so when you call. It changes what our engineers bring.

All about Colwyn Bay

Colwyn Bay is a coastal town in Conwy, Wales, situated on the Irish Sea coast at an elevation of around 30 metres. Colwyn Bay lies approximately 11 miles from St Asaph and is near the communities of Old Colwyn, Tan-y-Lan, and Penmaen Rhos. Colwyn Bay has a population of around 11,455 people and is characterised by its semi-detached housing stock. Colwyn Bay is located about 195 miles northwest of London.

What follows when our technicians reach you around Colwyn Bay

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that got in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Our engineers clear your tank of the polluted fuel.
  • We flush your fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, so what is remaining in your system is not what created the problem.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running correctly.

From there, you are ready to set off. All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very rare.

Colwyn Bay AdBlue removal is a separate problem

The problem is not the same, though the first instruction is — don't start it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Colwyn Bay page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Colwyn Bay

What shifts the price is laid out below, as this job is not one job and our engineers can't frankly put a single price on this page.

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel queries from Colwyn Bay drivers

Fuel drains on a Colwyn Bay petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a fair share of this work takes place. We attend BP and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the station's permission — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more commonly than drivers expect.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and flushing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has diluted is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different fault. So no. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Leave the car turned off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than drivers expect, and a parked, cold car is the best position to be in.
