Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Compton? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over Compton and the remainder of Berkshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When the motor has not yet been started and the fuel is still in the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Call us before anything else starts, and you'll learn what comes next.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Never crank it. Fired up regardless? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally can't run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off fine, for a few miles. Motorists get that reversed. It isn't okay — the fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Diesel burns, and before it combusts it greases — your high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition alone also: flicking it on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into precisely those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests — so don't pour diesel on top to thin it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Our team would rather drive to an odd location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to handle than a motor that has never moved. On the verge on Horn Street, that means hazards on and keep it.
  • The van arriving instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning RG20 6, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you phone.
  • What was put in, about how much, and if the motor has run — those three answers determine the full visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Ring us before you fetch the car. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane this morning, and the vehicle at Goring & Streatley ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is idle, and any harm came on the drive in, when your pump was pulling diesel that petrol had weakened.

The tricky part is the bay, not the fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height bar on the way in that settles if our van can reach you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one at Co-op Food, say how much room there is round you and which way round your car is. Those our engineers cover frequently. Should there be no room to work next to the diesel Volkswagen Passat, it gets shifted with your engine off, and not out of fussiness over a few seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of the blend departs the tank for your pump, and two shunts into a better bay have gradually made a worse job of what was just a motor sitting still.

Hazards on. Ignition off. Phone. It is twenty to nine by Compton C.E. Primary School, you are late, and your receipt says unleaded — and though three miles in the BMW 3 Series sounds like nothing, fuel is delivered on demand, and a frantic dash needs plenty of it.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while the vehicle waits, since a diesel Dacia Duster left at Cradlicote Coppice is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

Leave the Audi A6 by Compton Village Hall and phone us. We are direct about not driving on since a worn pump gives off, and what it loses passes onward with the fuel to the fuel injectors downstream.

Removing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

The work starts at a forecourt, mostly. Quite often the work ends at one as well. The drain usually happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the site's agreement, that's somewhere our technicians work, and regularly.

A filling station is the only setting this is halted before your motor has fired. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key.

Clear of the pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the vehicle. Well worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Compton and the places near it

Being a rural village, Compton sees a frequent call, while the places close by go with it on the same run: East Ilsley and Parsonage Green, Aldworth and Hampstead Norreys, Four Points.

Our engineers do come. The names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of places around Berkshire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Ring us to enquire rather than presuming, above all when you're on the border or anywhere your satnav misreads.

This map is the ground this page spans. All of that is ground our engineers serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never drive the car anywhere.

Stranded by the roadside somewhere around Compton?

Not everyone gets a sensible spot to pull over. Set off, then noticed? Ended up along the verge beside School Road, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a common call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you remain with the car or move away from it depends on if staying nearby seems safe. Do not fire up your motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into the system. Our van coming to a tricky spot is no trouble for us, and it's far better for your car than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, and your car has rolled

Here is where the M4 comes in — under 5 miles away from Compton. Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the next exit that is sensible, stop there, and don't start the vehicle to move it. On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors, and tell us when you ring. It affects what we bring.

Where's Compton?

Compton is a village in Berkshire, situated in the South East of England, with a population of around 1789 people. Compton sits inland, approximately 101 metres above sea level, and is located near the villages of East Ilsley and Aldworth. Compton is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is within commuting distance to Oxford, which is around 16 miles away. Compton is also about 48 miles west of London, making it a rural alternative to city living.

The call-out around Compton, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers change what the work really is.
  • Our technicians empty your tank of the polluted fuel.
  • What is remaining in your system should not be what caused the problem, so your fuel lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Our engineers put clean diesel in and bleed your system.
  • Our engineers start the engine and make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught early, permanent damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Compton?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — while the problem underneath it's a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Compton has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. Our engineers cover both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Compton?

Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here is what varies it:

  • This is the main one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Compton drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station around Compton, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there's possible.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that blend has been pulled through the system.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It's salvageable far more regularly than people expect, even though driving is what moves the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct issue and it does not put back what petrol has weakened. Your pump still has to cope with it, since the tank still has petrol in it later on.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Standing next to it?

Do not switch the car back on.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from much more regularly than motorists fear, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
