Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Corbridge

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over Corbridge and the rest of Northumberland. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. While your engine has not turned over and the fuel is still in your tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Call us before all else happens, so you'll learn what follows from there.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Never start it — and do not depend on it if it runs. Here is the bit motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just won't run, and so the person stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives off quite happily for a few miles. It's not fine. It's wearing your fuel system as you drive.
  • Turning the car's ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition alone.
  • Never tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it merely leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A motor that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Hill Street? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. An odd spot suits us better than a started engine.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts NE45 5, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.
  • What was put in, roughly how many litres, and whether the car has run — the three details shape the entire job. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Do not run it home. The commute has already pushed a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Renault Megane, and the drive back would about double it for no gain at all. Ring us from the platform if that is simpler. Our technicians don't need you standing over your car at the nearest station while our technicians get on, and our team would much rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.

What we will ask about is whether that trip there was short and chilly, as that's where petrol is slowest to burn properly — and whatever does not burn can get past the rings and into the engine oil. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel BMW 3 Series standing in the parking area at Golden Lion carrying a tank of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing deteriorates whilst it waits, so park the vehicle overnight then phone next morning.

Why so direct about leaving the keys alone? Because your pump is ahead of your injectors, and a wearing one sends whatever it sheds onward with the fuel. Ring us. Leave the Dacia Duster close to Corbridge Library.

Hire car or company car? Call them before you call us — some contracts want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it after that. Then phone us about the Audi A3 close to St Andrew's, and don't worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Almost no one can, in a vehicle they collected two days ago, and our engineers work it out on the spot. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that blend, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

The filter, your lines, your pump and its rail: that is where that blend is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with the tank contents. So the tank is not where most of the trouble sits by this point, and a diesel Peugeot 208 that made it near Corbridge Parish Hall needs the system cleared rather than cleared.

On a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

The job kicks off at the pump, usually. Regularly it wraps up at one as well. If you're still on the forecourt at Shell, that is generally where the drain takes place — we work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission.

Before the motor has fired — a forecourt is the one location the mistake ends up caught. The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the keys settle how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter require flushing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still sort it out where the vehicle stands.

Attendants will usually pitch in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get past. Take the help. Cranking it just for four car lengths? Never.

Corbridge and the villages beside it

Aydon Road Estate, Dilston, Aydon, Sandhoe, Riding Lea — each of them on the runs that carry us over to Corbridge as well, a riverside town.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all places across Northumberland, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours. Contact us to check instead of presuming — boundaries above all, and anywhere your satnav can get wrong.

The map is the patch this page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of it is territory our technicians cover, and none of it needs the car to travel to us.

Stuck by the kerbside somewhere around Corbridge?

The chance to stop anywhere safe doesn't fall to everybody. A common call for us and not an odd one: realised after setting off, finished up along the verge on Princes Street or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Out of your car if it's not wise to be inside, with it when it is. Never restart your engine to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mixture further into your fuel system. We'll send our van to a tricky spot without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is a lot better than carrying on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

under 25 miles out of Corbridge, the local Central Motorway East is what matters now. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. It affects what our technicians bring, so mention it when you ring: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors.

A little about Corbridge

Corbridge is a town situated on the banks of the River Tyne in Northumberland, with a population of around 2888 people. Corbridge has a mix of housing types, but terraced houses are the most predominant. Corbridge sits at an elevation of 43 metres, close to the nearby settlements of Aydon Road Estate, Dilston, and Aydon. Corbridge is located approximately 16 miles west of Newcastle upon Tyne, making it a commuter town for the city.

What happens when our technicians reach you around Corbridge

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses change what the work really is.
  • Out goes the polluted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • When it's started, our technicians check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been spotted quickly, and as everything is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Corbridge

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the motor stays off — while this fault under it's a separate one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Corbridge page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Corbridge pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One price would not be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the big one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much that tank can hold.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Things we get about petrol in diesel around Corbridge

I'm on a forecourt in Corbridge. Can you drain it on the spot?

Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there's possible.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the motor has run counts much more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving is what moves the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable far more frequently than drivers expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. That tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to take it to a main dealer, as we drain and flush your car wherever it is.

You, and your car, still together?

Turned off is how it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it afterwards. This is recoverable from a lot more often than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
