Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cosgrove? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across Cosgrove and the rest of Northamptonshire. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. When the engine has not been started and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much went in. Phone and then our engineers can tell you what follows after that before you try any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Do not fire it up. Turned on regardless? Then never believe it. Diesel in a petrol car generally won't run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for several miles. People get that confused. It isn't all right — the fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel performs two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, which pulls the petrol out of the tank then into precisely those components.
  • Never add diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice implies, and topping up removes nothing — it just leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Our team would rather drive to a difficult place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is easier to sort out than a car that has not shifted. On the verge on Bridge Road, that means hazards on and keep it.
  • Before you phone, get your location. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting MK19 7 — that's what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what was put in, about how many litres, and whether the motor has started. These three facts settle the whole visit.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, left at Wolverton since first thing? The day has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is idle. It was the trip in that sucked weakened diesel through your pump. Call us before you move the vehicle.

Straightforward job, this one — till someone takes it home. A diesel BMW 3 Series parked outside The Barley Mow with petrol in your tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, and so leave it and phone us once it is light. Expect a question about the drive there, though. Brief and chilly is precisely where petrol struggles to burn, and what will not burn can get past the piston rings then into the engine oil.

Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, and so whatever happened on the way to Ouse Valley Park in that diesel Nissan Qashqai is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the motor to find more of it.

Three things help when you call from near St Peter & St Paul: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up next to without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest place our technicians work, so the location itself is seldom the trouble — we'd far rather deal with a narrow parking space than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain your Mercedes E-Class, change the filter where there is a serviceable one, flush your lines then put fresh fuel through the full system, because by this point the worst of it is resting in the fuel lines instead of in that tank.

The filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail: that is where the mix is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with that tank contents. So that tank is not where most of the problem rests by this point, and a diesel Kia Sportage that made it close to Iron Trunk Hide needs the system purged rather than emptied.

Draining petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

Forecourts are where the work mostly begins, and where a good part of it closes. Still at Esso? Then that's usually where it happens. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the owner.

At the forecourt, the mistake gets spotted with your engine never run, and no place else does it. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys.

The staff will normally offer to push the car out from the pump so the next driver can get by. That is worth doing. Starting it to roll four car lengths is not.

Will we reach your side of Cosgrove?

Furtho, Old Stratford, Wolverton Mill, Castlethorpe, Wolverton Mill East — every one of those on the runs that bring us over to Cosgrove itself, a village.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for most locations in Northamptonshire, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours. Assuming is the mistake to skip, especially on a boundary or somewhere your satnav struggles. Contact us to enquire.

The map is the ground the page covers. All of that is ground our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not move your car anywhere.

Broken down on the kerbside around Cosgrove

Not everybody finds a decent spot to stop. A common call for us rather than a rare one: worked out after setting off, finished up along the verge on Yardley Road or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Clear of the car if it isn't sensible to be there, with it when it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that blend further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However tricky the spot, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that's much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

The M1 is the one that matters now, and it runs under 5 miles from Cosgrove. A misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are generally lost power, a rough idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

Get off at the first safe exit, turn off, and don't start it to move it. It alters what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

All about Cosgrove

Cosgrove is a small village in Northamptonshire, situated on the banks of the River Great Ouse at an elevation of around 85 metres. Cosgrove lies near the border with Buckinghamshire, close to the cities of Milton Keynes and Northampton, and is surrounded by other small settlements such as Furtho and Old Stratford. Cosgrove has a population of approximately 650 residents, living in predominantly detached homes. Cosgrove is within commuting distance of London, about 50 miles to the south.

Our job around Cosgrove, step by step

  • Our technicians find out what went in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • Our technicians empty your tank of all the contaminated fuel.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.
  • Your system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • After it is started, our engineers make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Cosgrove

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas the issue underneath it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the lubrication your fuel system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Cosgrove page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Cosgrove

One figure would not be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • This is the key one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much your tank can hold.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and whether it has run. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Cosgrove drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt around Cosgrove. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes, and it's where a large part of this work happens. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there. With the owner's permission we visit Essar and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mix has been pulled through your fuel system.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, and leave the car off. Driving is what moves the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more regularly than drivers fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different fault from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back. Your tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, because our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Do not switch the engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later on. This is recoverable from a lot more regularly than people assume, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
