Cove Bay: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With your tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet turned over, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is settled in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, and not by the amount that went in. Throughout Cove Bay and the remainder of Aberdeen City, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Phone before everything else happens, so you'll hear what comes next.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn
- Never start the car — and don't rely on it if it starts. This is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor fed diesel normally just won't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, idles and pulls away just fine for a few miles. It isn't okay. It's wearing the fuel system as you drive.
- Diesel combusts, and before it burns it lubricates — your injection pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be also: turning it on is frequently all it takes to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.
- Do not put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
- Remain where you are if you safely can. A motor that has never shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and our team would rather get to a tricky location than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Whitehills Rise, switch those hazards on and keep it there.
- The van turning up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode starting AB12 3, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Have both ready before you call.
- What went in, approximately how many litres, and if your car has fired — the three facts decide your whole visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
How far you travelled is what we care about, not how long your car has been parked — and here is why. Diesel performs two jobs on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before burning it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a quick top-up on the trip in, the penny dropping at about eleven, and a diesel Renault Megane parked outside Aberdeen since quarter past eight tells us those couple of miles were travelled with your pump labouring on a fuel stripped of a lot of its protection. Phone then keep the car just where it is.
Chance the trip home from The Snooty Fox? Not a chance. It will start and it will drive off quite happily, which is the issue — a diesel on a weakened tank runs generally whilst wearing down the components your fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Citroen C3 then phone.
Why so firm about leaving your keys alone? Because your pump is upstream of the fuel injectors, and a wearing one sends whatever it gives off on with your fuel. Phone us. Leave the Audi Q5 near Cove Library.
Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind your car — some agreements insist on it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, call us about the diesel Vauxhall Insignia by St Mary's Church. You'll not know how full your tank was. Barely anybody does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out on site regardless. Our technicians ask since the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger blend than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is engineered to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.
No warning exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position usually get driven once more before somebody phones. Do not be one of them. The throttle went limp and your idle turned ragged after a couple of streets, and your diesel Mercedes GLC is now resting near Isie Caie. Deadness there means fuel that can't build pressure correctly instead of a motor giving up. Switch off. Ring us.
At the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel
Forecourts are where the work often starts, and where a fair part of that ends. We operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission, and so if you are still at H2 Aberdeen that's typically where the drain takes place.
Before your motor has fired — a forecourt is the single setting the mistake is halted. Fuel drawn out of the tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the lines as well as your tank. That's still not a calamity, and our technicians deal with it where the vehicle is. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was checked.
Away from the pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you push it. Well worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.
Cove Bay and the places near it
Charlestown, Nigg, Altens, Marywell, Kincorth — each of these on our journeys that bring us over to Cove Bay as well, a residential suburb.
There are dedicated pages for most places around Aberdeen City, and the ones mentioned above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list says nothing at all about if we come. Assuming is the thing to avoid, above all on a border or somewhere the satnav gets lost. Phone to enquire.
The map is the area the page includes. We work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your car never needs to travel to us.
Broken down by the roadside around Cove Bay
Some people get no safe spot to pull over at all. Set off, then noticed? Landed along the verge of Earn's Heugh Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.
Out of your car if it is not wise to wait inside, beside it when it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the catch: fire it up to reach somewhere better and the mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. However tricky the place, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than pressing on.
Driven it already? Pull in, and see this
The local M90 is the one that counts now, and it lies over 50 miles from Cove Bay. Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.
The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you ring. What we bring changes.
Cove Bay itself
Cove Bay is a suburban area located on the coast of Aberdeen City, sitting at an elevation of 79 metres and approximately 3.4 miles from Aberdeen city centre. Cove Bay is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is situated near other nearby places such as Charlestown, Nigg, and Altens. Cove Bay has a population of around 5768 residents and is part of the larger Aberdeen urban area.
Once our technicians arrive with you around Cove Bay: what follows
- Three things get established before any price — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
- Out comes the tainted mixture.
- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
- The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
- When it's started, our engineers confirm it runs properly on new diesel.
From that point, you're ready to drive away. We do all of this wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, it is very unusual for there to be lasting damage.
A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Cove Bay
The problem isn't the same, though the first step is — do not fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.
Both are ours. There is a separate Cove Bay page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
Cove Bay pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain
What moves the figure is set out below, as the job isn't one job and we cannot honestly put a single number on this page.
- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much the tank holds.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a technician.
A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Cove Bay
I'm on a forecourt around Cove Bay. Can you drain it here?
Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission our technicians work at Shell and the other forecourts around town routinely.
Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?
It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mix has been sucked through the system.
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable a lot more often than drivers fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the car.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
It isn't a change, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. It belongs to a separate fault from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
Not at all. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.
Is your vehicle still with you?
Do not switch it on again.
Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people assume.
