Petrol in Diesel

Cowbridge: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started your engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor needs while the fuel is still in your tank and the engine has not turned over, which is why it's the next few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in Cowbridge or the remainder of The Vale of Glamorgan, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Phone before all else happens, and you will learn what happens after that.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Never crank it. Turned on anyway? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally can't run, and so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off fine, for a few miles. People get that reversed. It is not fine — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
  • Leave the car's ignition be also. Diesel has two tasks: it combusts, and before it burns it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is usually all it takes to prime the system, which moves the petrol out of that tank and into exactly those parts.
  • Do not put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage as that advice implies, and topping up removes nothing — it just hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has not moved is the quickest one to sort, and we would rather come to a difficult place than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on High Street, switch those hazards on then leave the car there.
  • Have your whereabouts ready before you call. A postcode starting CF71 7 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van arriving and the van circling.
  • What went in, roughly how much, and if the motor has run — those three facts determine your whole call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

On a forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

A large share of the work ends up completed at a pump, because that is where it mostly kicks off. We operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement, so if you're still at Esso that is typically where this drain happens.

The forecourt is the only spot the mistake is halted before your engine has run. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the keys.

Push the vehicle out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Shifting it four lengths does not justify starting the motor.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Cowbridge

Petrol in the Renault Clio, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you outside Filco, somewhere around Cowbridge? Then call us, and leave the motor out of it — not even to get out of the space. A technician gets to you. Tank drained, fuel lines flushed, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile draws very little, so these are usually the easy cases.

Try the trip home from Horse & Groom? No. It will start and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the problem — a diesel on a diluted tank behaves normally whilst wearing down the parts your fuel should be lubricating. Park the Peugeot 308 and ring us.

None of it is the engine failing. That's the bit worth hearing, and it's why the normal Cowbridge Physic Gardens call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Nissan Qashqai drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, your idle rough and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting parts it passes through; petrol thins it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure and not only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built escapes past tolerances, delivery shows up weaker and later and less even than designed, and all of that stops once the fuel is put right.

Most of these occur somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical not slapdash — practically no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Mercedes E-Class, a fill-up near Cowbridge & District Museum that you did not think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

Your filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail: that is where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. So your tank isn't where most of the trouble rests by this point, and a diesel Audi A3 that got near Holy Cross Church needs your system flushed instead of drained.

Will our engineers serve your side of Cowbridge?

Cowbridge is a riverside town, and so our vans are out to the town and to anywhere around it on the usual journeys: East Village, West Village, Llanblethian, New Beaupre and Aberthin.

We do come. The places above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all towns in The Vale of Glamorgan, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. On the border, or anywhere your satnav struggles with? Ring us to enquire instead of assuming.

This map shows the patch this page spans. The lot is ground our technicians serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't move the vehicle anywhere.

Kerbside breakdowns around Cowbridge

A chance to pull over anywhere safe does not fall to everybody. A normal call for us and not a rare one: realised after setting off, ended up on the verge of Town Hall Square or in a lay-by with the hazards going.

Clear of the vehicle if it is not sensible to be there, beside it when it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere handier and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven. Carrying on does the car far more harm than a technician driving out to a difficult spot, and that is no trouble for us.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

Your M4 is the road which counts now, and lies under 5 miles from Cowbridge. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they arrive are usually lost power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Get off at the first safe exit, switch off, and do not start the vehicle to move it. Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our technicians bring changes.

A little about Cowbridge

Cowbridge is a small town situated on the banks of the River Thaw in the Vale of Glamorgan, with a population of around 4000 people. Cowbridge has a mix of old and new buildings, including many detached houses, and is located near the villages of East Village, West Village, and Llanblethian. Cowbridge sits at an elevation of 26 metres above sea level, close to the capital city of Cardiff, which is approximately 11.7 miles away. Cowbridge is also within commuting distance of major cities, with London being around 142.8 miles away.

What our engineers do when our technicians reach you in Cowbridge

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses change what the work actually is.
  • The tainted mixture comes from your tank.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
  • Our technicians pour clean diesel in and prime the system.
  • After it's started, we check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been caught quickly, and as everything is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

Cowbridge AdBlue removal is a different job

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is the same — do not crank it — but the issue isn't. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and build-up instead.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal around Cowbridge has its own page with the full story — including why it's often the more serious of the two.

Cowbridge pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Truthfully, no single price fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what changes it:

  • Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much that tank holds.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for our van.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. If it isn't pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Cowbridge motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Cowbridge petrol station forecourt

A good share of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's consent our engineers attend Murco and the other forecourts locally regularly.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then keep the vehicle off. Driving is what takes the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more commonly than drivers fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it does not replace what petrol has diluted. Your pump still has to cope with it, as that tank still has petrol in it after that.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with your car?

Turned off is how it remains.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and let it remain that way. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than drivers expect.
