Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cowpen? Don't Start It

With your tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet turned over, nearly every job takes only a drain, so keep your engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Across Cowpen and the remainder of Northumberland, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Phone before all else happens, and you'll know what happens after that.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine enough for several miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't fire it up. And if started, don't trust it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates — your high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone too: switching it on is frequently enough to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into exactly those components.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never shifted is the quickest one to deal with, so stay where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Chasedale Crescent? Hazards on, and keep the car there. An odd spot suits us better than a started engine.
  • Before you ring, have your position. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts NE24 5 — that's what determines whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what was put in, roughly how much, and if the car has been run. Those responses shape all that follows.

Do not take it home. The drive in has already sent a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Volkswagen Golf, and the drive back would roughly double it for no purpose at all. Ring us from the platform if that's handier. Our engineers never need you hovering over your car outside Bedlington while our technicians work, and we would much rather speak to you tonight than find out on Monday.

We're in car parks like the one at Aldi a lot, and it is hardly ever the fuel that complicates them. It's that bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. At times a height bar at the way in, which determines whether our van reaches you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you call, and which way the vehicle is facing. If there is no space to work beside your Renault Clio, our technicians roll it without your engine. That is not fuss over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of the tank toward the pump, and a car shuffled twice for a nicer spot is gradually a bigger job than one nobody touched.

Shift the car out of that gateway and deal with it later — that is what somebody will say, and it's wrong. Stopped on the zig-zags outside Horton Grange Primary School, a misfilled diesel Peugeot 308 is a nuisance and nothing worse. Started three more times for politeness, it's no longer a tank issue but a fuel system one, as priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes through your filter towards the pump. Let people grumble. Give us a call.

Here is the entire process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the ordinary Briardale Play Area call — a diesel BMW 5 Series, out there without fuss and back down on power, rough at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it leaks past those clearances and not building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than your engine was designed about. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind your car — some agreements require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, phone us about the diesel Kia Sportage close to Blyth Family Church. You will not know how full the tank was. Hardly anyone does, two days into a motor, and it gets worked out there regardless. Our engineers ask as the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is engineered to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.

Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel at the forecourt?

A big part of the job ends up completed at a pump, because that is where it mostly kicks off. Still at Asda? Then that is generally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the station.

At a garage, it gets halted with your motor never started, and nowhere else manages it. Our engineers can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that sucked fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to go past that tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the keys are what settle that.

The attendants will normally happily roll the car clear of the pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing. Firing the car just for four vehicle lengths? No.

Do our engineers serve your end of Cowpen?

Cowpen is a residential suburb, so our team get out to the town and to anywhere by it on those same journeys: Malvins Close, Bebside, Newsham, New Delaval and Bedlington Station.

If yours isn't on this list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations in Northumberland, and the ones listed above are merely the closest neighbours. Assuming is the mistake to skip, especially on the boundary or anywhere your satnav gets lost. Phone to ask.

This map shows the ground the page spans. Our technicians work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your car does not need to come to us.

Kerbside call-outs across Cowpen

Some drivers find no suitable spot to pull over whatsoever. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Weardale Avenue as you realised after setting off — we take that call so often that it's the usual kind.

Remain with your car while it is sensible to wait inside, yet clear of it if it is not. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. We will send our van to a difficult location without any bother, and for the car that's a lot better than pressing on.

Run it already? Stop, and check this

This is where the A167(M) comes in — under 15 miles from Cowpen. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the next exit that is safe, pull up there, and never restart it to move it. On a longer run — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors, and mention it when you call. It changes what our engineers bring.

A bit about Cowpen

Cowpen is a suburban area located on the coast of Northumberland, with an elevation of 11 metres above sea level. Cowpen sits near the cities of Newcastle upon Tyne and is close to other nearby places such as Malvins Close, Bebside, and Newsham. Cowpen has a population of approximately 6143 residents and is characterised by semi-detached housing. Cowpen is situated in the North East region of England, around 256.8 miles from London.

The job in Cowpen, step by step

  • The replies change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.
  • The polluted fuel comes out of your tank.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that started the issue.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • When it is started, our technicians check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That leaves it ready to pull away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been caught quickly, and since all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Cowpen

Never start it: that opening step holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Cowpen page. Both are ours to handle.

Cowpen pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our technicians cannot put one number on this page honestly, since the job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much your tank holds.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us your car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range. If it is not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Cowpen

At a petrol station around Cowpen, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the site's consent our engineers visit Blyth Service Station and the other forecourts around town regularly.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that blend has been sucked through the fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not a modification, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different fault. So no. The pump still has to put up with it, since that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Is the car still with you?

Do not switch the engine on again.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from far more regularly than motorists expect, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.
