Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Coxlodge? Don't Start It

With your tank still holding the fuel and your engine not yet started, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes right after the fill-up, and not by the amount that went in. All over Coxlodge and the rest of Tyne and Wear, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Phone and we shall explain what happens after that before you try much else.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't fire it up. Fired up all the same? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol car normally won't run, so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for a few miles. Drivers get that reversed. It is not all right — your fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
  • Leave the ignition off as well. Diesel performs two tasks: it combusts, and before it ignites it protects your high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is often sufficient to prime the system, which carries this petrol out of the tank then into exactly those components.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A car that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Beal Way? Hazards on, then leave the car there. An awkward spot works for us better than a started motor.
  • Get your whereabouts prepared before you call. A postcode starting NE3 3 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between a van showing up and our van circling.
  • What was put in, about how much, and also whether the motor has fired — those three replies decide the entire call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Can petrol be taken out of a diesel at a forecourt?

Forecourts are where this job usually starts, and where a fair part of it ends. Still at Tesco? Then that's usually where it happens. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the site.

At a garage, this gets spotted with the engine never started, and nowhere else manages that. Fuel drawn out of the tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when your engine is switched on and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and your lines as well as your tank. That is still not a calamity, and we put it right where the vehicle stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Out from the pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the car. Very much worth doing. Starting it just for four vehicle lengths? Never.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Coxlodge

The enquiry we like sounds like this: diesel Renault Clio, a couple of litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now switched off at Asda. What we're really asking is how much fuel the pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

A diesel pump meters fuel on demand, and a hurried morning dash needs plenty — so three miles in the Skoda Octavia sounds like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine by Regent Farm First School, already late, a receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, motor off, ring us.

Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, and so whatever happened on the way to Northumberland Wildlife Trust St Nicholas Park Nature Reserve in that diesel Audi A4 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on your engine to find more of that.

Leave the Mercedes E-Class by St Hugh then call us. We are direct about not driving on because a worn-out pump gives off, and what it gives off travels onward with your fuel to the injectors downstream.

What occurs next is the trouble. Your engine at once sucks the petrol left sitting in your filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put clean diesel in, a person sure of themselves will tell you — and that suggestion is only half right, because do it to a diesel Citroen C3 parked up, Jubilee Theatre say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Ring us instead. Our technicians flush the circuit and take your filter off where the car has a working one, and that is the difference between the vehicle being put right and your car simply starting.

Do we serve your corner of Coxlodge?

These same trips take us to Gosforth, Fawdon, Kenton, South Gosforth and Melton Park besides Coxlodge, which is a neighbourhood.

If yours isn't on this list it does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of towns around Tyne and Wear, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours. Ring us to check instead of presuming — boundaries above all, and anywhere a satnav might struggle with.

The map is the area this page includes. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of that is ground our technicians cover, and none of that needs the vehicle to move to us.

Stranded on the kerbside in Coxlodge

The chance to pull over anywhere safe does not fall to everyone. A common call for us instead of a rare one: realised after setting off, finished up by the verge on Embleton Avenue or at a lay-by with the hazard lights on.

Whether you stay beside your car or move away from it rests on whether sitting in it seems sensible. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: restart it to reach somewhere better and the blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. Carrying on does your car far more harm than a technician driving out to an awkward place, and that's no trouble for us.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has gone

Here is where the A167(M) comes in, under 3 miles out of Coxlodge. A misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are generally a loss of power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long drive? Anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in our van.

Our job around Coxlodge, step by step

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses change what the work really is.
  • Out goes the polluted mixture.
  • We purge the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, so what's left in your system isn't what started the trouble.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • After it is turned on, our technicians check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you're ready to pull away. We do all of this wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been noticed quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Coxlodge

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas this problem under it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and deposits.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Coxlodge page. Both are ours to handle.

Coxlodge prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our engineers can't put one figure on this page honestly, because this job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • This is the main one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

Coxlodge motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station in Coxlodge, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this gets done. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the site's permission we attend Esso and the other forecourts around town regularly.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the motor has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable far more often than motorists assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. The pump still has to cope with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Not at all. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

Never switch your engine on again.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
