Petrol in a Diesel Car in Crag Bank

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Crag Bank and the remainder of Lancashire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While your engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still inside that tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Call us so our technicians shall show you what comes after that before you do any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Don't fire it up — and never depend on it when it fires up. This is the thing most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel typically just can't run, so the person stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives off without complaint for a couple of miles. It is not all right. It's eating into the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Leave your ignition be as well. Diesel performs two jobs: it ignites, and before it ignites it greases the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, which pulls this petrol out of that tank and into precisely those components.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to handle, so remain where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Crag Bank Crescent? Hazards on, then leave the car there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started motor.
  • Our van turning up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode starting LA5 9, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Keep both prepared before you dial.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, approximately how much, and also whether the car has started. These three facts settle the full job.

Clearing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

The job starts at the pump, usually. Quite often the job finishes on site as well. The drain normally gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the site's permission, that is somewhere our technicians work, and routinely.

No place other than a forecourt can the mistake be caught with the engine still unstarted. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean your lines and your filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the vehicle. Worth it. Starting the car to shift four car lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Crag Bank

Will we cover your side of Crag Bank?

Carnforth, Millhead, Nether Kellet, Bolton-le-Sands, Bolton Town End — all of those on our trips that carry us across to Crag Bank as well, a residential suburb.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and most places around Lancashire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Near the border, or anywhere your satnav can't find? Call us to check instead of assuming.

The patch the page spans is on our map. The vehicle doesn't need to come to us. Our technicians work across the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine outside Carnforth Community Primary School, running late, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, ring us. Three miles in your Peugeot 308 sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel to demand — and a hurried morning dash needs plenty.

The components that should be getting protected are wearing down instead, and the motor gives no sign of that: a diesel on a diluted tank fires up and moves off just fine. Chance the journey home from The Canal Turn? No. Phone and leave the Ford Focus where it stands.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and parked your diesel Audi A3 up close to Crag Bank Village Hall a couple of hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us and leave the car off. The short hop genuinely helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so diluted fuel has arrived at your filter and the pump — which is why our engineers rinse the fuel lines rather than only emptying the tank.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the car — some agreements insist on it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, call us about your diesel BMW 5 Series by Carnforth Rangers FC. You will not know how full that tank was. Scarcely anyone does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out on the spot anyway. We ask as the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger mix than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is designed to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.

By now that tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and that mixture goes into the filter, into your lines, into your pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with your tank contents. A diesel Citroen C3 that made it by County Library wants its system cleared. Draining is not the same thing.

Stranded at the roadside near Crag Bank

Some people find no suitable spot to pull in whatsoever. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up on the verge beside Crag Bank Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that is a normal call for us rather than a rare one.

Fine where you are? Sit beside it. Not fine? Climb out and clear of it. Never restart it to get to a nicer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mixture deeper into the fuel system. A van heading to an awkward place is no problem for us, and it is much better for the car than pressing on.

Driven it already? Pull over, and see below

Here is where your M6 counts, under a mile from Crag Bank. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power ebbs away, your idle gets rough, and there may be some smoke.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you call. What we bring alters.

Crag Bank itself

Crag Bank is a small suburban area situated near the coast in Lancashire, with an elevation of 21 metres above sea level. Crag Bank lies approximately 5 miles from Lancaster and is close to nearby places such as Carnforth and Nether Kellet. Crag Bank has a population of around 2416 people and predominantly features terraced housing. Crag Bank is located in the North West region of England, about 211.8 miles from London.

When our engineers reach you around Crag Bank: what happens

  • We find out what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.
  • The tainted mixture is drawn from your tank.
  • We flush your fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what's remaining in the fuel system is not what created the issue.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • Your engine is started and tested to be sure it runs properly on new diesel.

Then it's ready to drive away. Our engineers do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, it's very unusual for there to be permanent damage.

Crag Bank AdBlue removal is a distinct job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the engine remains off — while the issue underneath it is a different one altogether. The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and build-up.

Both are ours. There's a separate Crag Bank page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Crag Bank prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page honestly, as this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • This is the main one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and whether a technician can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it is not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Crag Bank

At a petrol station in Crag Bank, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Logs Direct is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mix sucked through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable a lot more frequently than drivers fear.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it does not put back what petrol has thinned. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and the car, still together?

Don't switch the engine on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
