Cramond: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With that tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet started, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that was put in. All over Cramond and the rest of City of Edinburgh, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Contact us before all else begins, so you will see what happens from there.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • As you drive, the pump and the injectors suffer. This is why you never crank it, and why you never believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point drivers get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Leave the ignition alone also. Diesel has two roles: it ignites, and before it burns it protects your high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is frequently enough to prime the system, which pulls that petrol out of that tank then into precisely those components.
  • Never dilute it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • We would sooner travel to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is easier to sort than a motor that has never shifted. On the verge on Whitehouse Road, that means hazards on then keep the car.
  • Know where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts EH4 6, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than showing up.
  • Three details determine the whole call-out: the stuff you poured in, the ballpark volume of it, plus whether it has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Clearing petrol from the diesel at the forecourt

Pumps are where the job often begins, and where a fair share of it ends. The drain usually happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the site's permission, that is a spot we work, and regularly.

Before your engine has run — the forecourt is the single location it gets stopped. Our technicians can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to reach past the tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the key are what determine that.

Staff will normally chip in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Take the assistance. Firing the car to shift four car lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Cramond

Diesel Skoda Octavia. Some litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Shut off now, at Scotmid. That's the call we hope for, as the real question under it is about volume through your pump rather than hours on the clock.

What we'll ask is whether that run there was short and cold, because that is where petrol is slowest to burn properly — and whatever won't burn can work past the piston rings then into the oil. Right up to the moment someone takes it home, a diesel Nissan Qashqai parked in the parking area outside Cramond Inn carrying a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing degrades while it stands, so park the vehicle there overnight then ring us in the morning.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built bleeds past clearances instead, leaving your engine a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting components it passes through — that is the whole mechanism. It explains the ordinary Cramond Walled Garden Park call too: a diesel Ford Focus that travelled out without complaint and came back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that is the part worth hearing. The fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

The pump waits upstream of your injectors, so whatever a worn one gives off passes onward with the fuel — which is why we're blunt about not driving on. Phone us, and leave the diesel Mercedes C-Class where it is close to Cramond Kirk.

Turn off where you have stopped, and do not restart it to find somewhere better — by Cramond Roman Fort and Civil Settlement or anywhere at all. Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 3008 telling you what's wrong.

Service near Cramond

Those same journeys take us to Braepark, Barnton, Cramond Bridge, Cammo and Davidsons Mains along with Cramond, which is a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of places in City of Edinburgh, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from that list means nothing whatsoever about whether our technicians come. On the border, or anywhere the satnav misreads? Call us and enquire rather than guessing.

Check the map for the ground included here. All of that is territory we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't drive your vehicle anywhere.

Kerbside breakdowns across Cramond

Not everyone gets the opportunity to stop anywhere sensible. Set off, then noticed? Finished up on the verge beside Fair-A-Far, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Fine there? Remain by it. Not okay? Step out and clear of it. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere safer and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. We'll send the van to an inconvenient location without any trouble, and for the car that's far better than carrying on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

Here is where your M90 counts, under 3 miles from Cramond. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle goes rough, and there may be some smoke.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and mention it when you phone. It alters what we bring.

Where's Cramond?

Cramond is a coastal suburban area in the City of Edinburgh, situated approximately 4.7 miles northwest of Edinburgh's city centre. Cramond sits on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth at an elevation of around 33 metres, with nearby neighbourhoods including Braepark, Barnton, and Cramond Bridge. Cramond is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock and a population of around 3082 residents.

Once our engineers reach you around Cramond: what we do

  • Our technicians find out what got in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • The polluted fuel comes from that tank.
  • Our technicians flush your fuel lines and clean your filter, and so what is remaining in your system is not what started the issue.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • After it's started, our engineers make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

From there, you're ready to set off. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Cramond is a different job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the engine stays off — while this problem beneath it's a different one altogether. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Cramond page. Both are ours to handle.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Cramond

Our technicians cannot put one number on this page truthfully, as this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • This is the key one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel queries from Cramond drivers

Fuel drains on a Cramond petrol station forecourt

A good portion of this work happens there, so yes. We visit Tesco and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the station's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is whether that blend has been sucked through the system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is fixable a lot more often than drivers expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a different issue from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to put up with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Is your car still with you?

Do not switch the engine back on.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than people fear.
