Petrol in Diesel

Crooked Billet: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never turn on the motor. While the petrol is still inside the tank and your engine has not turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, across Crooked Billet and the rest of Greater London, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. One ring our way will be sufficient: our team can show you what comes next. Make this first.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — fine for a few miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start the vehicle. And having started, don't trust it: your fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it combusts it lubricates — the injection pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone as well: flicking it on is often sufficient to prime the system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into just those parts.
  • That advice presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • We'd rather come to an odd location than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is easier to handle than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Crooked Billet, that means hazards on then leave it.
  • Get your location ready before you phone. A postcode starting SW19 4 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van showing up and our van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what went in, about how much, plus whether the motor has been run. The answers determine whatever happens next.

Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel at a forecourt?

Pumps are where this job usually kicks off, and where a fair part of it closes. Still at Shell? Then that is normally where it gets done. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the station.

No place other than a forecourt can it be caught with your motor still cold. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the motor is started and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the lines together with your tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians deal with it where your car is. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was read.

The attendants will usually offer to wheel the car away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. It is worth doing. Starting the car to shift four car lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Crooked Billet

Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel Nissan Qashqai, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off outside Sainsbury's now. Time passed is not the thing our technicians need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and weaker fuel leaks past the precision parts that are supposed to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel BMW 1 Series drove, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and sluggish on the way back is how the trip to Colman's Field went, then, and that tank is where to look. Stop somewhere safe, switch off then ring us.

Why so blunt about leaving your keys alone? Since your pump is ahead of your injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it loses downstream with your fuel. Phone us. Leave the Vauxhall Astra near Southside House.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you call us — some contracts want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it afterwards. Then phone us about the Peugeot 208 by The King's Club, and do not worry that you can't say how full that tank was. Almost nobody can, in a car they collected two days ago, and our engineers work it out on site. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mixture, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

Cleared, not cleared — that is what a diesel Citroen C3 which got as far as Westside Lawn Tennis Club needs. Running a diesel puts that blend into the fuel filter, the lines, the pump and its rail, none of which empties with the tank, so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the trouble.

Service around Crooked Billet

Those same journeys get us to Wimbledon Common, Copse Hill, Cottenham Park, Wimbledon and Raynes Park besides Crooked Billet, which is a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all towns across Greater London, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list says nothing at all about whether we come. Contact us to enquire rather than presuming, above all if you are on the border or anywhere the satnav struggles with.

The map is the ground this page includes. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is territory we work on, and none of it requires the car to travel to us.

Crooked Billet: stranded wherever you pulled up

Some people get no suitable place to pull in at all. If you worked it out after setting off and landed on the verge beside West Side Common, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that is a routine call for us rather than an odd one.

Wait beside the car when it's sensible to be inside, but out of the car if it is not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Pressing on does your car far more harm than our van coming out to a difficult spot, and that's no bother for us.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has moved

This is where your M4 comes into it — under 10 miles from Crooked Billet. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long trip? Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it changes what goes in the van.

Crooked Billet itself

Crooked Billet is a suburban area in southwest London, situated approximately 7 miles from the city centre. Crooked Billet sits at an elevation of around 54 metres, near Wimbledon Common and other open spaces. Crooked Billet is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing, which accommodates a population of around 4847 residents. Crooked Billet is also close to nearby neighbourhoods such as Copse Hill and Cottenham Park.

When our engineers get to you around Crooked Billet: what follows

  • Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • The tainted mixture comes from that tank.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the trouble, and so your fuel lines get purged and the filter cleared.
  • New diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • Our technicians start it and make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed soon, and as all of this is done where your car is, it never has to go to a garage.

Crooked Billet AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your motor stays off — while this issue beneath it is a different one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Crooked Billet has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. We cover both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Crooked Billet?

What changes the price is set out below, because this job isn't one job and our engineers can't honestly put a single figure on this page.

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Crooked Billet

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Crooked Billet?

Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers work at BP and the other forecourts around town regularly.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through the system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop somewhere sensible, turn off, then keep the car off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable much more commonly than motorists fear.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different fault. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to put up with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Turned off is the way it remains.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off and leave it off. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
