Cropwell Bishop: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Cropwell Bishop and the rest of Nottinghamshire. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. While the motor has not yet turned over and the petrol is still inside that tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much got in. We shall explain what your next part is. Phone — that comes ahead of everything else.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not fire it up — and never believe it when it does start. This is the bit people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine filled with diesel usually just won't run, and so the person stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, idles and drives off quite happily for a couple of miles. It is not fine. It's wearing your fuel system as you drive.
  • Flicking your ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • Never weaken it. Diesel tipped on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A motor that has never shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and we'd much rather come to an odd location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Fern Road, put those hazards on and keep the car there.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode beginning NG12 3, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than showing up.
  • Three details determine your whole job: the stuff you put in, the approximate quantity of it, and whether it has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

On a forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

The job begins at a forecourt, generally. Frequently the work finishes there as well. We work on station forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement, and so if you are still at Applegreen that is usually where the drain gets done.

At a garage, this is halted with the motor never started, and no place else manages that. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter require flushing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where the car stands.

Attendants will usually help out pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Take the help. Starting the car to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Cropwell Bishop

We'll get to you, drain that tank, rinse the fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can drive home. So if petrol went into your diesel BMW 3 Series in Cropwell Bishop and you're stuck at Co-op Food with a boot full of shopping, phone — and never crank it a second time to exit the space. A mile or so at easy throttle uses hardly any diesel, so those are often the easy ones.

Hazards on. Motor off. Phone. It's twenty to nine by Cropwell Bishop Primary School, you are late, and your receipt reads unleaded — and even though three miles in your Peugeot 308 sounds like nothing, fuel gets metered on demand, and a hurried drive asks for plenty of that.

A diesel Mercedes E-Class sitting in the car park outside The Wheatsheaf with a tank of petrol in it is an easy job, right up until somebody drives it home. Park the vehicle overnight and phone in the morning. Nothing degrades while it waits. What our technicians will ask about is if that drive there was brief and chilly, since that is where petrol is least able to burn properly — and what won't burn can slip past the rings and into the sump.

Your pump is not turning, so whatever your diesel Audi A3 did on the way to Hoe Hill, none of that is happening now. Nothing is getting worse whilst it sits. Take your time over this — but don't drive it home to buy any.

No warning exists for this, which is why cars in that position usually get driven again before anybody phones. Do not be one of them. The throttle went limp and your idle turned lumpy after a few streets, and the diesel Citroen C3 is now resting near The Old School. Deadness there means fuel that can't build pressure fully instead of a motor packing up. Switch off. Ring us.

Cropwell Bishop and the places beside it

As a rural village, Cropwell Bishop gets a routine call, and the villages round about go along on that same run: Blue Hill and Cropwell Butler, Tithby and Owthorpe, Colston Bassett.

Not on the list? That says nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and the majority of locations around Nottinghamshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Presuming is the thing to resist, above all on the border or somewhere a satnav struggles. Contact us to enquire.

That map shows the area this page covers. Your car does not need to come to us. We operate across every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck at the roadside around Cropwell Bishop

The opportunity to stop somewhere suitable doesn't come to everyone. A routine call for us and not an unusual one: realised after setting off, ended up on the verge on Church Street or at a lay-by with your hazards on.

Fine there? Remain beside it. Not safe? Climb out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mix further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. A van heading to an awkward spot is no trouble for us, and it's much better for your car than driving on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

The local M1 is the one which matters here, and it sits under 15 miles from Cropwell Bishop. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Never start it to move it. Get off at the next sensible exit then turn off. It changes what our engineers bring, so mention it when you call: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors.

A bit about Cropwell Bishop

Cropwell Bishop is a village in Nottinghamshire, situated approximately 7.6 miles south of Nottingham, and is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock. Cropwell Bishop sits in a low-lying area of the East Midlands, at an elevation of around 40 metres, and is near to other small settlements such as Blue Hill and Cropwell Butler. Cropwell Bishop has a population of around 1173 residents, and is located about 103.6 miles north of London.

What comes next when we arrive with you in Cropwell Bishop

  • We establish what was put in, how much, and if the motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • Away goes the polluted fuel.
  • What is left in your system shouldn't be what created the issue, and so the lines get flushed and the filter cleared.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • It's run with new diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running correctly.

From there, you're ready to pull away. Everything is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Cropwell Bishop?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas this problem underneath it's a distinct one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Cropwell Bishop page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Cropwell Bishop

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page honestly, as the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and if a van can safely get to and work on it.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run. If it is not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around Cropwell Bishop

I'm on a forecourt in Cropwell Bishop. Can you drain the car here?

A large part of this work gets done there, so yes. Our technicians attend JET and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether we can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through the system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable much more frequently than people fear.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct fault. So no. The tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to put up with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Shut off is how the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later on. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
