Petrol in Diesel

Crosby: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't turn on the motor. If the petrol is still sitting in the tank and your engine has not yet turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they are, throughout Crosby and the rest of Merseyside, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. One call to us will be plenty: our technicians can show you what comes after this. Make this right away.

What to do next about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for several miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And having started, never depend on it: your fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Flicking the ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition off.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and our team would much rather drive to an awkward place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on South Road, switch those hazards on and keep it there.
  • Have your whereabouts ready before you dial. A postcode beginning L22 0 and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van arriving and a van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Tell us what was put in, roughly how many litres, and if the car has started. Those three details determine the full call-out.

Quarter past eight. A hurried refuel on the drive in. Around eleven it dawns on you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has stood at Waterloo (Merseyside) for three hours. Phone us then keep the car where it is. What counts is the journey in, because diesel both combusts and — before that — greases your pump and the fuel injectors, whereas petrol only ever burns. Those couple of miles ran your pump on a liquid drained of a great deal of its protection, and no amount of sitting in a car park puts any of that back. Hence the thing we ask about distance rather than hours standing, and hence the advice to leave your keys where they are until our technicians turn up.

We're in car parks like the one outside Iceland a lot, and it is hardly ever your fuel that complicates them. It's that bay. Vehicles both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height limit at the way in, which determines whether a technician gets to you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you ring, and which way your car is facing. If there's no clearance to work beside your BMW 3 Series, our technicians shift it without your engine. That is not fussiness over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of your tank on to the pump, and a vehicle moved twice for a roomier bay is quietly a worse job than one no one touched.

Each restart primes the lines and drags more petrol past your filter then into your pump. So a misfilled diesel Nissan Qashqai on the zig-zags by Waterloo Primary School is a nuisance, whereas the same vehicle started three more times to be polite is a fuel system instead of a tank. Somebody will tell you to shift the car out of that gateway and deal with it later. Do not. Leave it, let people complain, and phone us.

The components that should be getting lubricated are wearing instead, and the motor gives no sign of that: a diesel on a diluted tank starts and moves off quite happily. Try the drive home from The Liver Hotel? Don't. Call us and leave the Mercedes E-Class where it is.

Three things help when you phone from near The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand beside without blocking the road, and if the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest location our technicians work, and so the location itself is rarely the problem — we would much rather deal with a cramped parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We will drain the Ford Kuga, change your filter where there is a serviceable one, flush your lines then put fresh fuel through the full system, since by this point the worst of it is resting in your lines instead of in the tank.

Clearing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

Plenty of this job begins at a pump, meaning a fair part of it ends up completed at one. If you're still at the forecourt at Shell, that is usually where the drain happens — we work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission.

At the forecourt, the mistake gets caught with your engine never started, and no place else does that. Our engineers can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from that tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the keys are what decide that.

The attendants will normally help you move it clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. That's worth doing. Rolling it four lengths doesn't warrant cranking the engine.

Places our team reach near Crosby

Those same rounds carry us to Waterloo Park, Waterloo, Seaforth, Great Crosby and Brighton le Sands as well as Crosby, which is a coastal town.

Our engineers do come. Those places above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all places across Merseyside, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Call us and check rather than assuming — county lines particularly, and anywhere the satnav may get wrong.

Look at the map for the patch included on this page. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us.

Kerbside call-outs across Crosby

Not everybody has the chance to stop anywhere suitable. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Crosby Road since you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the usual kind.

Out of the motor while it is not safe to wait inside, beside it when it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: restart the vehicle to get to somewhere handier and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile covered. A technician driving to an inconvenient spot is no bother for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Run it already? Stop, then see below

Your M57 is the road that matters now, and runs under 5 miles from Crosby. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It affects what our engineers bring.

Where's Crosby?

Crosby is a coastal town in Merseyside, situated approximately 5 miles north of Liverpool. Crosby sits at a low elevation of around 17 metres, with views out to the Irish Sea. Crosby has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are particularly prevalent in the area. Crosby is close to nearby attractions such as Waterloo Park and Seaforth.

Our visit in Crosby, step by step

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies shape what the work really is.
  • The polluted fuel comes out of that tank.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that created the trouble.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it is running smoothly.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is spotted quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Crosby is a separate job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas this fault under it is a different one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and deposits in its place.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Crosby page. Both are ours to deal with.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Crosby

What shifts the figure is listed below, because this job isn't one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single number on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much the tank takes.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for our van.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Crosby motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Crosby?

Yes, and it's where a fair part of this work happens. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there's possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and leave the car off. Driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable a lot more frequently than people fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Afterwards? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with your car?

Switched off is how it stays.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off. Cold and parked, a motor is in the best position available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
