Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Crosland Hill?

If you have not started the engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not turned over, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has come to rest in Crosland Hill or the remainder of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Our technicians will explain what the next part is. Ring us — it happens before anything else.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not start it — and do not rely on it when it runs. This is the bit people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel normally just won't run, and so the person stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives away quite happily for a couple of miles. It isn't all right. It is eating into that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it protects — your injection pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition off too: switching it on is frequently enough to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into just those components.
  • Don't add diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests, and topping up clears nothing — it merely leaves you a larger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A motor that has not shifted is the quickest one to handle, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Sands House Lane? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. An odd spot works for us better than a started engine.
  • Know where you are before ringing. A postcode starting HD4 7, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what got in, roughly how many litres, plus whether your car has been turned over. Those replies decide all that follows.

The trip back would close to double it, for no gain at all. One commute has already forced a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of your Renault Clio. So leave it where it is. Phone us from the platform if that is easier — no one needs you standing over the car at Berry Brow while we work, and tonight beats finding out on Monday.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside Aldi now. Time passed is not the thing our technicians need. Fuel drawn by your pump is.

You will be advised to move the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later. Don't. On the zig-zags outside Woodside Green, A Share Primary Academy, a misfuelled Peugeot 308 running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes your lines, every prime pulls more petrol through the fuel filter toward your pump. Let them grumble. Phone.

Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the car sits, as a diesel Mercedes E-Class parked at Crosland Heath Golf Course is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

The narrower petrol nozzle slides into a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical rather than careless. Unfamiliar places see most of that for that reason. So: fuelled up near The Eden Centre without thinking, in a diesel Volkswagen Touran you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anyone realises, and miles determines how much petrol reaches your injectors.

Can petrol be drained from a diesel at the forecourt?

The job starts at a pump, usually. Frequently it finishes on site too. Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement, so if you are still at the nearest petrol station that is normally where the drain takes place.

Nowhere other than a garage can this be caught with the engine still cold. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the keys.

The attendants will generally offer to push the car clear of the pump so the next customer can get past. It is worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Service in Crosland Hill

Crosland Moor, Cowlersley, Walpole, Milnsbridge, South Crosland — all of those on our journeys that take us out to Crosland Hill as well, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on this list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are separate pages for most locations in West Yorkshire, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours. On the border, or anywhere the satnav struggles with? Phone and enquire instead of assuming.

That map shows the area this page includes. The car doesn't need to move to us. We operate throughout all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck on the kerbside anywhere around Crosland Hill?

Not everyone finds a decent spot to pull in. Set off, then realised? Ended up on the verge on Blackmoorfoot Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Out of the vehicle when it is not sensible to be inside, by it if it is. Do not start up the motor to nurse the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into your fuel system. A technician heading to an awkward location is no bother for us, and it is much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where your Outlane Interchange comes in, under 3 miles away from Crosland Hill. A misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they arrive are normally a loss of power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

Do not start it to reposition. Come off at the first safe junction then turn off. Long trip? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it changes what goes in our van.

What we do when our technicians get to you in Crosland Hill

  • The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • The tainted mixture is drawn out of that tank.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
  • Our engineers pour fresh diesel in and prime your system.
  • The motor is started and tested to make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been spotted quickly, and since all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Crosland Hill?

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is the same — never fire it up — but the issue is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection your fuel system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Crosland Hill page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Crosland Hill costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our technicians can't put one number on this page truthfully, since the job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the car is.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel: common queries in Crosland Hill

Fuel drains on a Crosland Hill petrol station forecourt

A good part of this work happens there, so yes. Our engineers work at Fitzpatrick Fuels and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then leave it off. Driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is fixable a lot more commonly than motorists expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate problem and it does not replace what petrol has weakened. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Leave the engine shut off.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
