Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Crosslee? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Crosslee and the rest of Renfrewshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While your engine has not yet turned over and the petrol is still in that tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Contact us before all else begins, and you'll learn what comes after that.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a couple of miles. People have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't fire it up. And if started, never depend on it: that fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it greases — your high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition be also: flicking it on is often sufficient to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into just those components.
  • Do not tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice implies, and topping up takes out nothing — it only hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has not moved is the easiest one to handle, and we'd rather get to an awkward place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Back O Hill, switch your hazards on then keep it there.
  • Keep your position ready before you phone. A postcode beginning PA6 7 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between a van showing up and the van circling.
  • What was put in, roughly how many litres, plus whether your car has fired — these three replies determine the entire job. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

A fair part of the job gets finished at a pump, because that is where it often starts. Our technicians work on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's permission, so if you're still at Morrisons that's normally where this drain gets done.

A filling station is the single spot the mistake gets caught before the motor has run. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the key determine how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where the car sits.

Staff will usually pitch in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get past. Welcome the assistance. Starting the car just to roll four vehicle lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Crosslee

How much fuel the pump has sucked is what we are truly asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the enquiry our engineers hope for goes like this: diesel Renault Megane, some litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now turned off outside Co-op Food.

Hazards on. Engine off. Phone. It is twenty to nine at the gates of the local primary school, you are late, and the till receipt shows unleaded — and though three miles in the Peugeot 308 sounds like nothing, fuel is supplied to demand, and a rushed run demands plenty of that.

The pump isn't turning, and so whatever your diesel BMW 5 Series did on the way to Crosslee Park, none of that is going on now. Nothing is getting worse while it waits. Take your time over this — but never drive the car home to buy any.

Three things help when you ring from near St Fillans: which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and if the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place we work, and so the place itself is seldom the trouble — we'd much rather deal with a tight parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain your Vauxhall Astra, change the filter where there's a serviceable one, flush the lines and put fresh fuel through the full system, because by this point the worst of that is waiting in the fuel lines instead of in the tank.

By this point the tank isn't where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, that mix is in your filter, your lines, your pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Mercedes A-Class that got by Carrick Centre needs your circuit purged, not emptied.

Parts we reach in Crosslee

Being a village, Crosslee has a regular visit, whilst the areas nearby come with it on that same run: Craigends and Houston, Brookfield and Ranfurly, East Fulton.

Our technicians do come. The places above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for most places across Renfrewshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. On the boundary, or somewhere your phone can't find? Contact us to ask rather than presuming.

This map shows the patch the page covers. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and the vehicle never needs to come to us.

Stuck by the roadside somewhere in Crosslee?

Not everybody has a sensible place to pull in. A routine call for us and not a rare one: worked out after setting off, ended up by the verge of Houston Road or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Stay with the vehicle when it's wise to sit inside, yet out of the car when it is not. Do not fire up your engine to limp the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into your fuel system. A technician coming to a tricky place is no trouble for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than pressing on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

Your M8 is the road which counts here, and sits under 3 miles from Crosslee. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Pull off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and do not start it to move it. Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you call. What our engineers bring changes.

Where's Crosslee?

Crosslee is a village situated on the riverside in Renfrewshire, with a relatively low elevation of 28 metres. Crosslee lies near several other small communities, including Craigends, Houston, and Brookfield, and is approximately 11.8 miles from Glasgow. Crosslee has a population of around 1504 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Crosslee is also relatively distant from London, at around 350.8 miles away.

When we reach you in Crosslee: what we do

  • We ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses shape what the work really is.
  • Out comes the polluted fuel.
  • Our technicians clean the fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what is left in the fuel system isn't what caused the trouble.
  • Our technicians pour fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • The engine is turned on and tested to be sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

At that point it's ready to pull away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Crosslee is a separate problem

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — don't fire it up — but the fault is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the protection the system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and build-up in its place.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Crosslee page. Both are ours to handle.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Crosslee

One figure wouldn't be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much your tank holds.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a van.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Crosslee motorists

I'm on a forecourt in Crosslee. Can you drain it here?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this takes place. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Tesco is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that blend has been sucked through the fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave the car off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable much more regularly than drivers fear.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and flushing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Still with the car?

Switched off is how the car stays.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, turn it off and keep it off. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
