Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Crumbles

If you have not turned on the engine yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor requires while the fuel is still inside your tank and your engine has not yet run, which is why it's the coming few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Crumbles or the rest of East Sussex, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. We can show you what the next move is. Phone — it comes before anything else.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not fire it up. Fired up regardless? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol car generally will not run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for a few miles. Most people get that reversed. It isn't all right — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off also — switch it on and you commonly prime that system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for exactly those components.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes — so do not put diesel on top to dilute it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A car that hasn't moved is the easiest one to handle, so stay where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on San Diego Way? Hazards on, then keep the car there. A tricky spot suits us better than a started engine.
  • Our van arriving instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning BN23 5, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Get both prepared before you dial.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what was put in, about how many litres, and if the motor has been started. Those answers settle all that happens next.

Phone us before you drive the car. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan this morning, and the vehicle at Pevensey & Westham ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is inert, and any wear was done on the journey in, when your pump was taking diesel that petrol had diluted.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both ready. Your BMW 3 Series will have felt entirely usual on the way back from The Haven Church of England Methodist Primary School — they all do, and that is the snag. Diesel into a petrol motor mostly won't run at all: the person stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, idles, pulls away like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the protection the fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, as behind the wheel nothing appears wrong.

Don't risk it. The drive home from Martello Inn is quite possible, which is precisely the issue — a diluted tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the parts the fuel is supposed to lubricate. Ring us, then let the Dacia Duster stay where it is.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, parked close to Sovereign Harbour Community Centre. For a diesel Mercedes E-Class whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Ring us, then let the vehicle stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had weakened fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the fuel lines get rinsed and not just your tank cleared.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle soft, idle lumpy, and the diesel Citroen C3 is parked up by Fisherman’s Memorial. The motor isn't giving up — that sluggishness is fuel that will not build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, so cars like yours typically get driven again before somebody picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, then call us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Crumbles

Removing petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

Plenty of the job begins at a forecourt, which means a fair part of that gets finished at one. If you are still on the forecourt at Asda, that is typically where this drain takes place — we work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's permission.

The forecourt is the only location this can be stopped before the engine has run. Fuel drawn out of the tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is switched on and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and the lines together with your tank. That's still not a calamity, and we sort it out where the vehicle sits. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Staff will generally chip in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Accept the help. Firing the car just for four vehicle lengths? Never.

Crumbles and the places near it

Crumbles is a coastal village, and so our team head out to it and to the places by it on the same trips: Langney Village, Langney, St Anthonys Hill, Pevensey Bay and Westham.

We still come. The places above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all locations across East Sussex, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Guessing is the thing to resist, especially on the border or somewhere the satnav gets lost. Call us and check.

Use our map for the ground included on this page. Your vehicle doesn't need to move to us. We operate throughout every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Crumbles: stranded wherever you pulled up

The chance to pull over anywhere safe does not come to everyone. A normal call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, landed on the verge beside Long Beach Close or in a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Fine there? Stay with it. Not fine? Get out and away from it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: restart it to get to somewhere better and the blend goes further into the system with every mile driven. We'll send the van to a difficult place without any fuss, and for the car that's much better than carrying on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

under 50 miles out of Crumbles, the local M23 is what matters here. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Don't restart it to move it. Get off at the next safe exit and turn off. Long run? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in the van.

A bit about Crumbles

What happens when our engineers arrive with you around Crumbles

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.
  • That tank is drained of it.
  • Our engineers flush the lines and clear the fuel filter, so what is remaining in the system is not what caused the problem.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • The motor is turned on and tested to confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That has it ready to set off. We do everything wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught early, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Crumbles?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the motor remains off — while this issue under it's a different one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal in Crumbles has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is often the more significant of the two. We deal with both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Crumbles?

Our technicians can't put one number on this page frankly, as the job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much that tank can hold.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a technician.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

Questions we hear about petrol in diesel around Crumbles

Fuel drains on a Crumbles petrol station forecourt

A fair part of this work takes place there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site consents: Premier Marina, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer there and then.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. What decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been sucked through the system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable far more regularly than drivers fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Don't switch it back on.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, and let the vehicle stay that way. A parked, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists fear.
