Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Crystal Palace?
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Crystal Palace and the rest of Greater London. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. While your engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still in your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Ring us so our technicians shall tell you what happens next before you do anything else.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn
- Never start it — and don't rely on it when it fires up. That is the bit people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel normally just will not run, and so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, ticks over and moves off without complaint for several miles. It is not all right. It's wearing out the fuel system while you drive.
- Leave the car's ignition alone as well. Diesel does two jobs: it ignites, and before it combusts it greases that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime your system, which moves the petrol out of your tank and into exactly those components.
- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
- A motor that hasn't moved is the simplest one to handle, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Crystal Palace Station Road? Hazards on, then keep the car there. An awkward location suits us better than a started diesel.
- Before you dial, get your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting SE19 2 — that is what decides whether the van shows up or circles.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, about how many litres, and if the car has started. These three answers settle the entire call-out.
How many miles you travelled is what we care about, not how long the motor has been parked — and this is why. Diesel does two roles on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before burning it protects that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a rushed top-up on the drive in, the realisation coming around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf left at the nearest station since quarter past eight means those few miles were done with the pump running on a fluid drained of much of its protection. Ring us and leave the vehicle exactly where it stands.
Three answers determine most of the work: what got in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we arrive at the car in the car park by Westow House. After that the contaminated mixture comes out of that tank, the fuel lines are cleaned, and where your Nissan Qashqai has a serviceable filter, it comes off. When new diesel is in and your system primed, we fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before you set off.
Stop somewhere safe, switch off then call us. Happy on the way out to Crystal Palace Park, sluggish on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol thins diesel; runnier fuel seeps past the precision components that build injection pressure; and the further your diesel Audi A4 travelled, the less of that pressure it held.
About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Ford Focus left close to Joseph Paxton hardly two streets on. Ring us, and leave it off. A short hop does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so your filter and your pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence cleaning the lines rather than only emptying the tank.
The fuel filter, the lines, the pump and its rail: that is where that mix is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. So the tank is not where most of the problem waits by this point, and a diesel Peugeot 3008 that made it close to Athletics Stadium needs the system cleared instead of emptied.
Removing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt
The work begins at a forecourt, mostly. Frequently the work wraps up on site too. We operate on station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement, and so if you are still at Shell that is typically where the drain gets done.
At a forecourt, it gets spotted with your motor never fired, and nowhere else does it. The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the keys decide how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter require rinsing as well as the tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where the car sits.
Out from the pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the staff help you roll the car. Very much worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.
Areas we serve around Crystal Palace
Anerley, Gipsy Hill, Norwood New Town, Upper Sydenham, Sydenham — all of them on our journeys that carry us across to Crystal Palace too, a residential suburb.
If yours is not on that list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for most places across Greater London, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours. Contact us and ask rather than presuming, particularly where you're on the border or somewhere the satnav gets wrong.
This map outlines the area the page covers. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is territory our engineers cover, and none of that needs the car to move to us.
Crystal Palace: broken down where you stopped
Some drivers find no safe spot to pull over whatsoever. Set off, then realised? Finished up on the verge beside Ledrington Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That's a common call here. Not an odd one.
Stay with the car when it is wise to be in it, yet clear of it when it is not. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: start it up to get to somewhere better and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven. Our van heading to a difficult location is no problem for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than driving on.
Run it already? Pull over, then read below
This is where the M4 counts, under 15 miles out of Crystal Palace. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power drains away, the idle gets rough, and there may be smoke.
Take the next junction that is safe, pull up there, and never restart it to move it. Presume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you call. What we bring alters.
Where is Crystal Palace?

Crystal Palace has a population of around 8072 residents.
Once we arrive with you around Crystal Palace: what follows
- We establish what got in, how much, and if the motor has run. The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
- Our engineers drain your tank of the polluted mixture.
- What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what caused the issue, so the fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.
- Our technicians put new diesel in and bleed the system.
- It is started with fresh diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running correctly.
From that point, you are ready to drive away. Our engineers do all of it wherever your car has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.
Crystal Palace AdBlue removal is a different matter
If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — don't crank it — yet this issue isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and deposits.
We handle both, and AdBlue removal around Crystal Palace has its own page with the details — including why it is often the more serious of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Crystal Palace
We cannot put one price on this page frankly, as this job isn't one job. What shifts it:
- This is the main one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.
- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a van.
Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it isn't urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in Crystal Palace
Fuel drains on a Crystal Palace petrol station forecourt
A good portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Often, provided the site agrees: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer straight away.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Whether the engine has run counts much more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more commonly than drivers assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it does not replace what petrol has diluted. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
There is no need to bring it to a dealership, since we drain and clean your car wherever it is.
Still with your vehicle?
Don't switch the engine on again.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more regularly than people fear.
