Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cuckoos Corner

Never fire up the engine. If the petrol is still inside your tank and the engine has not turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that's decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, all over Cuckoos Corner and the rest of Wiltshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Our technicians shall explain what the following stage will be. Call us — that comes ahead of everything else.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for several miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start the car. And once started, do not believe it: your fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it protects — that high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off as well: turning it on is often sufficient to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into precisely those components.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Sit tight if it is sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Crookwood Lane, anywhere — an odd location for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Before you phone, gather your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting SN10 4 — that is what settles whether the van turns up or circles.
  • What was put in, roughly how much, and also if the engine has fired — these three facts decide the whole visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

The high-pressure pump spent that morning drive running on a fluid that had given up a great deal of the protection it is made for. Diesel lubricates that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of the fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So take a diesel Volkswagen Golf, filled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and left sitting at Pewsey until you realise close to eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The few miles before that did a lot, which is why the question our technicians put to you is about distance instead of time. Phone. Keep the vehicle precisely where it is.

Every start primes that fuel system and draws more of the blend out of that tank and toward your pump — which is why a car moved twice into a nicer space has quietly turned into a bigger job than one left just where it stopped. So if we can't work alongside your diesel Peugeot 308, our engineers shift it without starting it. None of that is pedantry about a few seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside The Co-operative Food our engineers attend frequently, and your fuel is hardly ever the difficult part: the bay is. Cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height bar at the way in settling if a van can reach you at all. Tell us how hemmed in you are, and which way the vehicle points.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of Urchfont Church of England Primary School. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand says unleaded. Turn the hazard lights on, leave the engine alone, then phone. You may think three miles is nothing, in the Ford Focus or anything else — except that fuel is delivered on demand, and a run taken in a hurry asks for a great deal of that.

Rattling? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That is your wrongly fuelled Mercedes A-Class, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe by St Michael and All Angels, then leave the restarting alone.

Flushed, not cleared — that is what a diesel Volvo XC60 which got as far as Planks Farm Shop needs. Running a diesel puts the blend into your filter, the lines, the pump and its rail, none of which empties with that tank, and so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the problem.

Removing petrol from the diesel at the forecourt

Pumps are where the job usually kicks off, and where a big chunk of it finishes. Still at Esso? Then that's usually where it happens. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the station.

The forecourt is the one spot this is caught before the engine has started. Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and moved there, and that sucked fuel through your filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past the tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key are what determine that.

The attendants will usually offer to roll the car away from the pump so the next customer can get through. That is worth doing. Firing the car just to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

Cuckoos Corner and the towns next to it

Urchfont, Townsend, Eastcott, Lydeway, Stert — every one of these on our trips that carry us across to Cuckoos Corner itself, a residential suburb.

We still come. The places above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of towns around Wiltshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Presuming is the mistake to avoid, particularly on a border or anywhere the satnav struggles. Ring us and check.

This map marks the patch this page covers. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of it is ground our technicians cover, and none of that asks your car to travel to us.

Kerbside stops around Cuckoos Corner

Not everyone has a suitable place to stop. A common call for us and not a rare one: worked out after setting off, ended up by the verge beside Cuckoo Corner or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Safe where you are? Sit beside it. Not fine? Move out and away from it. Never fire it up to get to a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mixture deeper into the system. However awkward the spot, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than pressing on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the M4 counts, under 15 miles away from Cuckoos Corner. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the next exit that is sensible, stop there, and do not start it to reposition. On a longer run — anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and tell us when you phone. It alters what our engineers bring.

Cuckoos Corner itself

Cuckoos Corner is a small suburban area in Wiltshire, situated inland at an elevation of 123 metres, and is located near the villages of Urchfont and Townsend. Cuckoos Corner is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its development as a residential area. Cuckoos Corner sits approximately 18 miles from Salisbury and 79 miles from London, making it a commuter base for those working in the nearby city. Cuckoos Corner has a population of around 735 residents, according to recent estimates.

The job in Cuckoos Corner, step by step

  • Our engineers check what was put in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
  • The tank is drained of it.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that started the trouble.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • The engine is turned on and tested to confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

From there, you're ready to pull away. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it is noticed early, permanent damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Cuckoos Corner is a different job

The issue is not the same, though the first step is — do not start it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the protection your fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal around Cuckoos Corner has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. We deal with both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Cuckoos Corner?

We cannot put one figure on this page frankly, since the job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there sensibly?

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and if it has run. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Cuckoos Corner

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Cuckoos Corner?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this happens. Our technicians attend Murco and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the site's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run counts much more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been drawn through your fuel system.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then leave it off. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a modification and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Leave it switched off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then let it stay that way. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
