Petrol in Diesel

Curran: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never fire up the engine. While the fuel is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet been started, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that's determined in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they are, all over Curran and the rest of County Londonderry, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. One ring our way will be plenty: we will tell you what follows after this. Try this first.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Do not crank it — and never trust it when it runs. That is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel normally just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives away without complaint for several miles. It isn't all right. It is grinding that fuel system as you drive.
  • Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel performs two roles: it burns, and before it ignites it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime the system, which moves that petrol out of the tank and into exactly those components.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel poured on top takes out nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A car that has not moved is the easiest one to sort, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Wallace Cottages? Hazards on, then keep it there. An odd location works for us better than a started engine.
  • Keep your position prepared before you phone. A postcode beginning BT45 8 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van showing up and a van circling.
  • Three answers decide the full visit: the stuff you put in, the rough measure involved, and whether anything has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Can petrol be drained out of a diesel on the forecourt?

A large part of the job is finished at a forecourt, as that's where it often kicks off. The drain typically takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station? Given the owner's consent, that is somewhere our technicians work, and often.

Before the engine has run — a forecourt is the single spot it ends up stopped. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the key settle how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where your car stands.

Out from the pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the staff help you move the vehicle. Worth doing. Starting the car over four vehicle lengths? Never.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Curran

Petrol in your BMW 3 Series, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at the local shops, somewhere in Curran? Then ring us, and leave the engine out of that — not even to leave that bay. Somebody comes to you. Tank emptied, fuel lines rinsed, new diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile pulls hardly anything, so these are usually the easy ones.

Your Ford Focus remains where it is in the car park by the pub in the village for the whole job, which usually goes like this. First our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since, because most of the work rests on those answers. That tank is emptied of the polluted mix, your lines are cleaned, and the filter comes off if it is a replaceable one. With clean diesel in and the system bled, the car is fired up and checked, and once it is running correctly you pull away.

Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting parts it flows through, and petrol weakens it. That's the entire mechanism, and it accounts for the ordinary the green space at the edge of the village call: a diesel Dacia Duster that drove out there without complaint and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when the fuel dilutes, pressure that should build then stay built starts escaping past clearances instead, and your engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed about. None of that is the engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is your fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is sorted.

Three things help when you call from close to the centre: which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand beside without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place we work, so the spot itself is rarely the trouble — we would far rather deal with a tight parking space than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain your Peugeot 3008, change the fuel filter where there's a usable one, flush your lines and put clean fuel through the entire circuit, because by this point the worst of that is waiting in your lines rather than in the tank.

No dashboard light exists for this, which is why cars in that position usually get driven once more before anybody rings. Don't be one of them. The throttle went soft and your idle turned uneven after a couple of streets, and the diesel Vauxhall Insignia is now waiting near the far end of the built-up part. Deadness there means fuel that cannot build pressure properly instead of a motor failing. Switch off. Call us.

Can we cover your side of Curran?

Knockcloghrim, Gulladuff, Castledawson, Magherafelt, Desertmartin — all of them on our trips that take us over to Curran itself, a small village.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and nearly all locations around County Londonderry have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Close to a boundary, or anywhere your phone can't find? Contact us and check instead of assuming.

That map marks the ground the page spans. Our technicians work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and your vehicle never needs to move to us.

Roadside call-outs around Curran

Not everybody finds a decent place to pull over. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of B842 because you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it is the normal kind.

Out of the motor if it's not safe to be in it, with it if it is. Never start up the motor to limp the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into the fuel system. Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than a technician heading out to a tricky place, and that is no trouble for us.

Driven it already? Stop, then read this

Here is where your M77 counts, over 50 miles away from Curran. A drop in power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first junction that is safe, stop there, and never restart it to move it. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 50 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you ring. It alters what we bring.

About Curran

Curran is a small locality in County Londonderry, situated inland at an elevation of 42 metres. Curran lies near the villages of Knockcloghrim, Gulladuff, and Castledawson, and is approximately 30 miles from Lisburn. Curran is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its rural setting. Curran is a relatively small community, with a population of around 777 people.

The visit around Curran, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.
  • Away comes the polluted mixture.
  • What is remaining in the system should not be what created the problem, and so the fuel lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • Our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been caught soon, and since all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Curran is a distinct job

The problem is not the same, though the first step is — don't fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Curran page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Curran

What shifts the figure is laid out below, as the job is not one job and our engineers cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much your tank holds.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and whether our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Curran motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Curran?

A good part of this work gets done there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our technicians answer straight away.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and leave the car off. It is salvageable far more regularly than motorists fear, even though driving is what takes the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different problem and it does not restore what petrol has diluted. Your pump still has to cope with it, because the tank still has petrol in it later on.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Never switch the engine on again.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more frequently than people expect.
