Petrol in Diesel

Cwmavon: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Cwmavon and the rest of Neath Port Talbot. The very first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When your engine has not yet turned over and the petrol is still inside the tank, a drain is nearly always all it needs, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Phone before all else happens, and you will know what happens after that.

The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it. Fired up anyway? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car generally can't run, so the person stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off fine, for a few miles. Most people get that confused. It isn't all right — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it protects — the high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition be also: flicking it on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into exactly those parts.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage as that advice presumes — so do not add diesel on top to thin it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never moved is the simplest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Depot Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. An awkward spot suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Our van showing up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode starting SA12 9, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you call.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, approximately how much, and also whether the car has run. Those three replies decide your whole call-out.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where the work mostly starts, and where a big share of it finishes. The drain generally happens right there. Still on the forecourt at Tesco? Given the owner's permission, that is a spot we work, and regularly.

At the forecourt, it gets stopped with your motor never started, and nowhere else does that. We can still put it right where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that pulled fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past the tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key are what decide that.

Staff will generally chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Take the assistance. Cranking the car to shift four vehicle lengths is not.

How much fuel your pump has sucked is what we're really asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the phone call we like sounds like this: diesel Renault Megane, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now shut off outside Tesco.

Someone will tell you to move the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later. Do not. A misfuelled diesel Peugeot 308 on the zig-zags by the local primary school is a nuisance; the same motor started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system instead of a tank. Every restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol through the fuel filter then into the pump. Leave it there, let them grumble, and call us.

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off and call us. Normal on the way out to Margam Forest, gutless on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol weakens diesel; runnier fuel seeps past the precision parts that build injection pressure; and the further your diesel Audi A4 travelled, the less of that pressure it held.

Clearing your Ford Focus, changing the fuel filter where there's a usable one, purging the fuel lines, putting clean fuel through the entire circuit: that is this job, and it's shaped by the worst of it waiting in the lines rather than in the tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from close to Cwmavon Community Centre — which side the filler is on, whether our van can stand next to without blocking the road, and whether your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest place our engineers work, so the spot itself is rarely the trouble. A tight parking bay beats a motor driven somewhere more handy.

That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the engine giving up — and with no warning light for it, vehicles in that position typically get driven a second time before somebody phones. Don't. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Vauxhall Astra now waiting near Pen-y-Castell Iron Age Hill Fort. Switch the vehicle off then ring us.

Service near Cwmavon

Those same runs take us to Brynbryddan, Ynysygwas, Pantdu, Caerhendy and Corlannau as well as Cwmavon, which is a coastal village.

Our engineers still come. Those places above are only the closest neighbours, and a page is there for most locations across Neath Port Talbot, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Call us and ask instead of presuming, particularly where you are on a boundary or somewhere your phone can't find.

The map shows the ground the page includes. Your car never needs to move to us. We operate over every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Roadside call-outs in Cwmavon

Not everyone gets a chance to stop anywhere suitable. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up by the verge beside Somerset Place, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that is a normal call for us rather than a rare one.

Clear of the car if it's not sensible to wait in it, beside it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. However inconvenient the place, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has travelled

under 3 miles from Cwmavon, your M4 is what counts here. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Don't restart it to move it. Come off at the first safe exit and turn off. Long drive? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the phone, as it affects what goes in the van.

Our visit around Cwmavon, step by step

  • We ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses shape what the work really is.
  • Our engineers clear that tank of the contaminated mixture.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains afterwards is not the thing that started the issue.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians check that it is running smoothly.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. All of it is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

Cwmavon AdBlue removal is a different problem

Never fire it up: that first rule holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. Petrol thins the diesel and strips the protection the fuel system depends on. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Cwmavon has its own page with the details — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

Cwmavon pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One figure would not be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much that tank can hold.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
  • Whether a van can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the car is.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Cwmavon

Fuel drains on a Cwmavon petrol station forecourt

Much of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Our engineers attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if we can work there.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep it off. Driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable far more commonly than motorists assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to remain off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

The motor stays off.

Switch it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
