Petrol in Diesel

What Happens Now: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Cyprus

Stop. Motor off. Keep it that way — no moment on, no shifting it anywhere. Hasn't been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever your car has stopped — and nothing settles that more than the next few minutes do. Wherever you are in Cyprus, this is the order things go from now.

Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Do the following first, in this sequence.

  • Bleeding the system pulls petrol from the tank towards the parts it damages, and turning your ignition on can be all it takes to do that. So the keys get taken out, and the ignition remains off completely.
  • Do not top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You are left with a bigger tank of the same mix.
  • Hazards on. If you're at all close to moving traffic, make your car simple to see before you do anything else.
  • By hand, never on the engine: that's how it comes off the petrol pump. Get the forecourt attendants to help you push, however short the miles.
  • Hold on to your receipt. It says which fuel was put in plus about how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

Still on the move when you noticed? Come off the M11 at the next junction if that's where you are, under 10 miles from Cyprus, and stop somewhere sensible and not pushing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

The fork in every Cyprus fuel drain: has it run yet?

Everything after this point depends on one answer.

Not run, not even once:

  • That petrol is still inside the tank and nowhere else.
  • Where your car stands is usually where the work is done: a drain, then a flush.
  • Stage one matters for exactly this reason: it's the best spot to be in.

If it has been started, even for a second:

  • Some petrol has left that tank by now, passed through the filter, and reached your lines.
  • Run it farther and the petrol reaches the fuel injectors, having gone through your fuel pump first.
  • The job grows with the mileage — lines cleaned, filter dealt with, occasionally more.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, protecting your high-pressure pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line falls where it does. Nothing is damaged by petrol that is just sitting in a tank. As soon as it is pumped, petrol begins grinding whatever moves it.

Cyprus, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

A little planning is the difference between a van that finds you and a van that circles.

  • Where you have stopped. A postcode beginning E6 5 is the ideal place to start.
  • Give the street — Devalls Close or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.
  • Car parks are located most easily by what they serve: say the one outside Co-op Food, and it's easy.
  • The vehicle. Make, model, and that it is a diesel.
  • Which was put in matters: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Cyprus has a page just for that. So say.
  • How much. Litres from the receipt, or how long the nozzle was in the filler.
  • Has it run? If so, tell us how far it went, and the way it was driven.
  • Whose car it is. Some hire or company contracts want the owner to authorise the work, and that is easier settled before our technicians arrive than after.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home with going nowhere — does the trick too.

Waiting for a fuel drain in Cyprus: what to do

The wait is where well-meant help does the damage. Hold to these.

  • Safety before your car. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself away from the traffic and wait away from it. If it is safe where it stands, stay with it.
  • A kind passer-by does not crank it. Nor does anyone checking it still does the trick, or rolling it a couple of yards.
  • Additives remain in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of the petrol out again.
  • A DIY drain leaves the fuel that has already gone beyond the tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is hazardous too.
  • Not for your radio, not for your windows: the ignition stays off.

The fuel drain, step by step, after the van gets there

  • Three questions. What got in, how much, and if it has run. Those answers decide the job, which is why our quote comes after them but not before.
  • Out of your tank comes the tainted mix: the tank is drained.
  • The fuel lines are flushed. If it ran, the petrol has moved beyond your tank, and the lines are carrying it.
  • Where the car has a usable filter, it is changed; if not, cleared.
  • Fresh diesel in, and the fuel system primed.
  • Our engineers fire it up only after new diesel has gone in and bled your system, then check that it is running smoothly.

Only once it is running on new diesel do our engineers go. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been caught early, so the vehicle can go straight back to normal use.

Cyprus, after the fuel drain: back on the road

  • After it has been started on clean fuel, there's nothing unusual to do: drive normally.
  • Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or your throttle hesitating: pull over then ring us back.
  • An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was done, and so keep your documents.
  • The handle's colour is not the thing to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
