Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Dalshalloch? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Dalshalloch and the remainder of East Ayrshire. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. When your engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still in your tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. One call our way will be plenty: our engineers can explain what happens after this. Make this first.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never start the car. And having started, don't rely on it: the fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Switching the car's ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition be.
  • Do not water down it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has not moved is the easiest one to sort, and we would rather drive to an awkward place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Arran Drive, switch the hazards on and keep it there.
  • A van arriving instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts KA18 2, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you call.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, approximately how much, and also if the car has run. These three details decide the whole visit.

Phone us before you fetch it. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Passat this morning, and it outside Auchinleck ever since? Then the wait has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is dormant, and any wear was done on the drive in, when your pump was pulling diesel that petrol had weakened.

If you have put petrol in the diesel Renault Clio in Dalshalloch and you're now stuck outside Morrisons Daily with a boot loaded with shopping, phone us. Never start the car again to get out of the space. We will come to you, drain the tank, flush the fuel lines and put clean diesel in so you can get home. A mile or so at gentle throttle draws very little of it, which is why those tend to be the easy cases.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both prepared. Your Audi A4 will have seemed perfectly ordinary on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that is the catch. Diesel into a petrol car generally won't run at all: the person stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, idles, moves off like nothing happened, while your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication your fuel should be giving it. No warning comes, because behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

Hardly ever the trouble, the location. On-street is the most common spot our technicians work, and a narrow parking space is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you ring from close to Mining Memorial, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then the BMW 5 Series gets drained, the fuel filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the lines flushed and fresh fuel put through the whole circuit — as by now the worst of that is in the lines, not the tank.

The slimmer petrol nozzle goes into a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical instead of slapdash. New spots see most of it for that reason. So: fuelled up by Auchinleck Memorial Garden Clock without thinking, in a diesel Vauxhall Astra you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone notices, and mileage determines how much petrol reaches the fuel injectors.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Much of this work starts at a pump, so a large share of it gets finished there. Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that's normally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the station.

The forecourt is the only location the mistake is spotted before the motor has run. Our engineers can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to reach past your tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the key are what determine that.

The staff will generally happily move it out from the pump so the next customer can get through. That's worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

Can our technicians reach your part of Dalshalloch?

Dalshalloch is a residential suburb, and so our technicians are out to it and to the places near it on the same runs: Auchinleck, Back Rogerton, The Rigg, Knockroon and Holmhead.

Not on the list? It means nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and nearly all towns across East Ayrshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Near a boundary, or anywhere a satnav misreads? Contact us to enquire instead of assuming.

The area the page spans is on the map. Your vehicle doesn't need to move to us. Our technicians work across every bit of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stopped at the roadside anywhere around Dalshalloch?

A chance to stop somewhere sensible does not come to everybody. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Mauchline Road because you worked it out after setting off — we take that call often enough that it's the usual kind.

Whether you wait by the car or stand clear of it rests on if sitting in it is wise. Don't fire up the motor to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into the system. A technician coming to an awkward location is no bother for us, and it's much better for your car than driving on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

This is where the M77 comes in — under 15 miles from Dalshalloch. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the first exit that's sensible, pull up there, and do not start the car to move it. It changes what we bring, and so tell us when you ring: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Dalshalloch itself

Dalshalloch is a suburban area situated on the riverside in East Ayrshire, with a mix of flat housing and local amenities. Dalshalloch sits at an elevation of 158 metres, near the communities of Auchinleck and Back Rogerton. Dalshalloch is located approximately 27 miles from Glasgow, making it a commuter base for the city. Dalshalloch has a population of around 1560 residents, living in a relatively small and compact area.

What we do when our technicians get to you around Dalshalloch

  • The replies change the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.
  • Your tank is emptied of it.
  • Our engineers clean the lines and clear your filter, so what's left in the system is not what caused the problem.
  • We put new diesel in and prime the system.
  • We start the engine and check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

That leaves it ready to pull away. There's no need for a workshop at any point, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it is caught soon, permanent damage is very rare.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Dalshalloch?

The fault isn't the same, though the first step is — do not start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol thins the diesel and takes away the protection the system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and deposits.

AdBlue removal around Dalshalloch has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. Our engineers handle both.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Dalshalloch

One price wouldn't be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for our van.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel: common questions around Dalshalloch

Fuel drains on a Dalshalloch petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a big portion of this work takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's agreement our technicians visit JET and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It's fixable much more commonly than motorists assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Do not turn your engine on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it afterwards. This is recoverable from a lot more regularly than people fear, and a still, cold car is the best place to be in.
