Petrol in Diesel

Debenham: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet run, almost every job needs only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout Debenham and the rest of Suffolk, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Ring us and our team shall tell you what happens after that before you do much else.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Never crank it. Started all the same? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually can't run, and so the driver stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away happily, for several miles. Motorists get that backwards. It isn't all right — your fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it greases — your high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition be too: switching it on is frequently enough to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.
  • Do not pour diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it simply hands you a fuller tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • We would rather come to an awkward location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to handle than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on High Street, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode beginning IP14 6, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what was put in, about how much, plus if your car has been turned over. The replies decide whatever follows.

How many miles you travelled is what our technicians care about, not how long the motor has been sitting — and this is why. Diesel does two jobs on its way through a motor: it ignites, and before burning it greases that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a rushed fill-up on the way in, it dawning on you close to eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf left at Needham Market since quarter past eight means those few miles were driven with your pump running on a fluid stripped of a lot of its protection. Phone and leave the vehicle right where it is.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of Sir Robert Hitcham Church of England Voluntary Aided School. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand says unleaded. Put the hazards on, leave your motor alone, then phone. You could think three miles is nothing, in your Skoda Octavia or anything else — except that fuel is metered on demand, and a drive taken in a hurry needs a great deal of it.

Risk the drive home from Woolpack? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will drive off quite happily, which is the trouble — a diesel on a thinned tank runs typically while wearing the components your fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Audi A4 and ring us.

Draining the Mercedes E-Class, changing the filter where there's a serviceable one, purging the fuel lines, putting clean fuel through the entire circuit: that is this job, and it's shaped by the worst of it resting in the fuel lines instead of in your tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from close to Dove Cottage — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can park alongside without blocking the road, and if the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest spot our technicians work, and so the place itself is hardly ever the issue. A cramped parking spot trumps a motor driven somewhere more handy.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle uneven, and the diesel Citroen C3 is parked up close to Debenham Village Sign. The engine is not packing up — that sluggishness is fuel that will not build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, so motors like yours typically get driven once more before anyone picks up the phone. Don't. Off, then phone us.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A big portion of this job is done at a forecourt, since that is where it often starts. Still at Evergreen Garage (Crowfield) Ltd? Then that's typically where it takes place. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the station.

Before your engine has started — a garage is the one location the mistake is caught. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key.

The staff will normally happily roll the car out from the pump so the next customer can get through. That is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

Debenham and the areas near it

These same runs carry us to Cherrytree Green, Fen Street, Aspall, Winston and Winston Green as well as Debenham, which is a village.

There are pages for the majority of locations in Suffolk, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off this list tells you nothing at all about if we come. Call us and check rather than presuming — boundaries particularly, and wherever your phone might struggle with.

The map shows the area this page covers. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is ground we cover, and none of that asks your vehicle to come to us.

Stuck at the kerbside in Debenham

The opportunity to pull over anywhere suitable doesn't fall to everyone. If you realised after setting off and finished up on the verge beside Little Back Lane, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that's a routine call for us rather than an odd one.

Safe right there? Stay beside it. Not okay? Step out and clear of it. Don't fire up your engine to limp the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that blend further into the fuel system. A technician coming to an awkward place is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for your car than pressing on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

The M11 is the one which matters here, and runs under 50 miles from Debenham. Lost power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Get off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and never start the vehicle to move it. Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our engineers bring differs.

Where is Debenham?

Debenham is a village situated in the Suffolk countryside, near the River Deben, with an elevation of around 44 metres. Debenham lies close to several small settlements, including Cherrytree Green, Fen Street, and Aspall, and is approximately 26 miles from Colchester. Debenham has a population of around 1683 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Debenham is also within commuting distance of London, being around 74 miles from the capital.

Our call-out around Debenham, step by step

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • The polluted mixture is drawn from that tank.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left afterwards isn't the thing that started the trouble.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • Once it is turned on, our engineers confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. We do all of this wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

Debenham AdBlue removal is a different matter

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first rule is the same — never start the car — yet the fault isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection the system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and residue in its place.

AdBlue removal around Debenham has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. We deal with both.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Debenham

One number would not be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the big one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a van.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in Debenham

Fuel drains on a Debenham petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the station's agreement we attend BP and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. What settles how much work is required is whether that mix has been drawn through the system — since though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. It is recoverable a lot more frequently than motorists expect, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, as our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Still with your car?

Leave the car switched off.

Switch it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
