Petrol in Diesel

Denny Bottom: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With that tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet started, almost every job needs only a drain, so keep your engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, and not by the amount that was put in. All over Denny Bottom and the rest of Kent, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. A single ring our way will be enough: our technicians can show you what happens next. Make that first.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for a couple of miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not start it. And once started, don't believe it: that fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the ignition remains off also — switch it on and you usually prime your system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for just those parts.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay still if it is safe to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Woodside Road, anywhere — an odd spot for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a vehicle that never shifted.
  • Before you ring, work out your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting TN4 8 — that is what settles whether our van arrives or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what went in, about how much, and if the engine has been started. Your responses decide everything that comes after.

Don't run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through your high-pressure pump in real volume on the way in, and the drive back would close to double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is fine. There is no need to stand over that Renault Megane at Tunbridge Wells whilst the work goes on, and we would very much rather talk to you tonight than find out on Monday.

Petrol in the Volkswagen Passat, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Lidl, somewhere around Denny Bottom? Then call us, and leave the engine out of that — not even to exit the spot. Somebody comes to you. Tank drained, fuel lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile draws hardly anything, and so these tend to be the simple jobs.

Every restart primes your lines and draws more petrol through your filter and into your pump. So a misfuelled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags outside Bishops Down Primary and Nursery School is an inconvenience, whereas the same vehicle started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system rather than a tank. Somebody will advise you to shift it out of the gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. Leave it, let people moan, then give us a call.

Three replies decide most of the work: what was put in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for them when we arrive at your car in the car park outside Toad Rock Retreat. Then the polluted blend comes out of your tank, your lines are flushed, and where your BMW 3 Series has a replaceable filter, it comes off. When clean diesel is in and the system bled, we start it and make sure it runs properly before you pull away.

Someone sure of themselves will tell you to drain the car and put new diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Vauxhall Astra close to St Paul's Church Centre and your engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here is the problem: there is petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is draw it back through your pump again. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Ring us. The circuit gets flushed, your filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that is what separates a repaired motor from one that merely starts.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where the job mostly kicks off, and where a good chunk of it finishes. If you're still on the forecourt at BP, that's typically where the drain happens — we work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's permission.

The forecourt is the single spot it gets spotted before the motor has fired. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still put it right where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key.

The staff will generally happily wheel it out from the pump so the next motorist can get past. It is worth doing. Cranking it just to roll four car lengths isn't.

Areas our team serve in Denny Bottom

As a residential suburb, Denny Bottom gets a regular call, whilst its neighbours close by come with it on that same journey: Lower Green and Rusthall, Broomhill Bank and Nevill Park, Hungershall Park.

There are separate pages for the majority of places around Kent, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list tells you nothing whatsoever about if we come. Assuming is the habit to skip, especially on a boundary or somewhere your phone fails. Ring us and enquire.

Use the map for the patch shown here. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is territory our engineers cover, and none of that requires your car to move to us.

Stranded on the roadside in Denny Bottom

Not everyone has the opportunity to pull in anywhere safe. Set off, then realised? Landed on the verge of Harmony Street, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Remain beside your car while it's wise to wait inside, and clear of the vehicle if it's not. Never fire it up to reach a better spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the blend deeper into the fuel system. However awkward the spot, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that is much better for the car than driving on.

Driven it already? Pull over, then check this

The local M25 is the road that counts now, and lies under 15 miles from Denny Bottom. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power falls away, your idle gets rough, and there may be smoke.

Come off at the next safe exit, switch off, and do not restart it to move it. Long run? Anything near the under 50 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the phone, since it changes what goes in our van.

The call-out in Denny Bottom, step by step

  • The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and whether the motor has run.
  • Away goes the tainted fuel.
  • What is remaining in the system should not be what created the issue, so the lines get cleaned and your filter cleaned.
  • Our technicians put fresh diesel in and prime your system.
  • When it is turned on, we make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to set off. We do everything wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, it's very unusual for there to be permanent damage.

A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Denny Bottom

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is unchanged — don't crank it — yet the issue is not. Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the protection your fuel system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and deposits.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal around Denny Bottom has its own page with the details — including why it's frequently the more serious of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Denny Bottom

What changes the price is listed below, since the job isn't one job and our engineers cannot honestly put a single number on this page.

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much your tank takes.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Denny Bottom motorists

At a petrol station in Denny Bottom, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this takes place. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something we answer there and then.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mix drawn through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then leave it off. Driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable much more often than people assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Do not switch your engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. This is recoverable from far more commonly than people assume, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
