Petrol in a Diesel Car in Dinas: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, don't switch your motor on, even briefly, to shift it. Stop; leave the car off. The coming few minutes determine it more than anything else: petrol in a diesel still unrun usually amounts to draining and cleaning, on the spot. What follows is the order from here, anywhere in Dinas you are.

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

Go through the following in sequence, before you do anything else.

  • Pull the keys out. Even the ignition on its own can prime the system, pulling petrol out of the tank to exactly the parts it harms, and so leave the car alone completely.
  • Do not top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You end up with a fuller tank of the same mix.
  • Get the car simple to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there is moving traffic anywhere close to you.
  • The staff will normally help you push it clear of the pump. Ask, and move it by hand — never on the motor, even for a couple of yards.
  • Keep the receipt. It shows which fuel was put in and roughly how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

On the M4, under 10 miles from Dinas, the next junction is the spot to come off; anywhere, the first safe place to stop. Don't press on to the services. Then go back to stage one.

The fork in each Dinas fuel drain: has it run yet?

From this stage on, everything comes down to a single answer.

Not run, not even once:

  • That petrol is still inside the tank and nowhere else.
  • The job is a simple drain and a flush, usually done where your car stands.
  • No place is better, and it's why the first stage counts so much.

If it's been started, even for a moment:

  • Petrol has been pulled out of your tank, through the filter and into the lines.
  • Run it further and that petrol reaches the fuel injectors, having passed through your pump first.
  • The farther it went, the bigger the job — the fuel lines, the fuel filter, and sometimes more besides.

Why the line falls there: diesel protects your high-pressure pump and the injectors as it passes through them, and petrol doesn't. In your tank, sitting still, petrol does no harm. Once it's pumped, petrol starts wearing whatever moves it.

Before you call about petrol in a diesel in Dinas: what our technicians need

A van that circles against a technician that finds you: a little planning is the difference.

  • CF40 1 plus the remainder of the postcode is the best way to begin telling us where you are.
  • A road name is a help: Graigddu Road, say, or whatever street you've stopped in. A car park works too.
  • Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside Lidl, for instance — and it is much quicker to find.
  • The make and model of the car, and the fact it is a diesel.
  • Which went in counts: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Dinas has a page just for that. So tell us.
  • How much. Litres from the receipt, or how long the nozzle was in the filler.
  • The miles it did, and how hard, if it has run at all.
  • Sort who owns the vehicle before our technicians get there: some hire or company agreements want the owner to approve the work, and that is faster first.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then. Email works as well if it can wait, with your car left at home, going nowhere.

While you wait for a fuel drain around Dinas

The wait is where well-meant help does the harm. Hold to these.

  • Safety before the vehicle. If it has stopped somewhere dangerous, get yourself clear of the traffic then wait away from it. If it's safe where it sits, stay with it.
  • No one starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll it a couple of yards.
  • None of that gets that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not something from the boot. So no additives.
  • A DIY drain leaves your fuel already gone beyond that tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is risky too.
  • Keep the ignition off — your windows and the radio included.

Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one step at a time

  • Three queries. What was put in, how much, and whether it has run. The answers decide this job, which is why the price comes after them and not before.
  • Out of your tank comes the tainted blend: that tank is drained.
  • Rinsing the fuel lines follows, because a motor that ran has petrol past that tank, in the fuel lines themselves.
  • Cleared, or replaced if your car has a workable one: the fuel filter is seen to next.
  • Bleeding your system comes after clean diesel is in.
  • The start. With clean diesel in and your system primed, it's fired up and tested to be sure it runs properly.

Until it runs on new diesel, we remain with it. Your car returns to normal use straight away, and long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted soon.

Dinas, after your fuel drain: back on the road

  • Nothing unusual is needed after a start with fresh diesel — normal driving will do.
  • Pull over and ring us back if anything seems wrong early on — a light on your dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.
  • The work may matter later with a hire firm, an insurer or a fleet manager. Hold on to your documents.
  • The handle's colour isn't the thing to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
