Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Dingle

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Dingle and the rest of Merseyside. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the engine has not yet run and the petrol is still sitting in your tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. A single call our way is enough: we can show you what happens from here. Try that first.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Never crank it — and don't depend on it when it starts. This is the bit drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel generally just won't run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, idles and pulls away quite happily for several miles. It isn't all right. It's eating into the fuel system while you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it combusts it protects — that high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition off also: turning it on is frequently enough to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into precisely those components.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to handle, and we would much rather get to a difficult location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Dingle Brow, turn your hazards on and leave it there.
  • Have your whereabouts ready before you ring. A postcode that starts L8 9 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van showing up and a van circling.
  • What got in, roughly how many litres, and also whether the car has started — these three answers settle the full visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Ring us before you fetch the car. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan this morning, and it at St Michaels ever since? Then the wait has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is harmless, and any wear was done on the journey in, when your pump was drawing diesel that petrol had thinned.

Somebody will urge you to shift it out of that gateway and sort it out later. Do not. A misfuelled diesel Peugeot 3008 on the zig-zags at St Finbar's Catholic Primary School is an inconvenience; the same motor started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system rather than a tank. Each restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol through your filter and into the pump. Stay put, let them complain, then give us a call.

The pump is not turning, and so whatever the diesel Audi A3 did on the way to Starr Fields, none of it is happening now. Nothing is getting worse while it waits. Take your time over this — but do not drive it home to buy any.

Three things help when you ring from close to Ancient Chapel of Toxteth: which side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common location our engineers work, and so the place itself is rarely the trouble — we'd much rather deal with a tight parking space than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain your Vauxhall Astra, change your filter where there is a serviceable one, flush your lines and put clean fuel through the whole circuit, as by this point the worst of it is waiting in the fuel lines instead of in your tank.

Hire car or company car? Call them before you ring us — some contracts want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later on. Then ring us about the Ford Kuga close to The Belvedere Community Activity Centre, and do not worry that you can't say how full the tank was. Nearly nobody can, in a vehicle they collected two days ago, and our engineers work it out there. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a ratio: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that blend, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel on the forecourt?

A fair part of the job is done at a forecourt, since that is where it usually kicks off. Still at Shell? Then that is typically where it gets done. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the owner.

Before the engine has fired — the forecourt is the single spot the mistake gets caught. Our engineers can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and driven there, and that sucked fuel through your filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to reach past the tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they usually will. The next customer gets through the pump, and that is worth doing. Firing it over four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Parts our vans reach in Dingle

Dingle is a residential suburb, so we get out to it and to anywhere around it on the usual trips: St Michaels Hamlet, Toxteth, Princes Park, Sefton Park and Fulwood Park.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and most towns in Merseyside have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Contact us to enquire instead of assuming, above all if you are on the border or anywhere your satnav misreads.

The map marks the area this page spans. Our technicians work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the car never needs to travel to us.

Broken down at the kerbside near Dingle

Some people find no suitable place to pull over at all. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Bosnia Street since you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.

Safe where you are? Stay with it. Not fine? Move out and clear of it. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to reach somewhere safer and the mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven. A technician driving to an awkward place is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for your car than carrying on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 5 miles out of Dingle, your M62 is what matters now. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power drains away, the idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Get off at the next safe junction, turn off, and don't restart the car to move it. Long drive? Anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it changes what goes in our van.

All about Dingle

Dingle is a coastal suburban area in Merseyside, situated near the city of Liverpool, with a mix of terraced housing and local amenities. Dingle is characterized by its proximity to the sea and its relatively low elevation of 37 metres, giving it a distinctive coastal feel. Dingle is close to other nearby places such as St Michaels Hamlet, Toxteth, and Princes Park, and is about 2.2 miles from Liverpool city centre.

What our engineers do when our engineers arrive with you in Dingle

  • The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.
  • The tainted mixture is pulled out of the tank.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left afterwards isn't the thing that caused the problem.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
  • Once it's started, our engineers check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

That leaves your car ready to set off. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught early, permanent damage is very rare.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Dingle?

The problem isn't the same, though the first instruction is — do not fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and residue instead.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal in Dingle has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more serious of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Dingle

Honestly, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and whether the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it's not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Fuel drains on a Dingle petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers attend Esso and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. What settles how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through the system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of the tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more frequently than people fear.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has diluted isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate issue. So no. The pump still has to put up with it, as the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is your vehicle still with you?

The engine stays off.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off. A stationary, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than drivers assume.
