Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Dobb Brow?
Never fire up the engine. While the fuel is still inside the tank and your engine has not turned over, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, all over Dobb Brow and the rest of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Just one ring to us will be enough: we can show you what comes after this. Make it straight away.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do now
- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for a few miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't crank it. And having started, do not trust it: that fuel system is grinding while you drive.
- Leave the car's ignition be too. Diesel performs two jobs: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is often sufficient to prime the system, which carries that petrol out of your tank and into just those components.
- Do not water down it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
- Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Green Meadows, anywhere — an odd location for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a vehicle that never shifted.
- Keep your whereabouts ready before you dial. A postcode beginning BL5 2 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van turning up and a van circling.
- Three answers shape the whole job: the stuff you poured in, the approximate quantity involved, and if it has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.
Removing petrol from the diesel on a forecourt
Plenty of the work starts at the pump, so a good part of it gets done on site. If you're still at the forecourt at Esso, that's usually where the drain takes place — we work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the station's consent.
Before the motor has started — a forecourt is the only spot it is halted. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when your engine is fired up and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and your lines along with the tank. That is still not a calamity, and our engineers sort it out where your car sits. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.
The staff will generally help you wheel it out from the petrol pump so the next customer can get past. That's worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.
If you've put petrol in your diesel Renault Megane in Dobb Brow and you're now stuck at Lidl with a boot packed with shopping, call us. Do not fire it up once more to get out of that spot. We'll come out to you, drain that tank, flush the fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can head home. A mile or so at easy throttle draws little of it, which is why these are often the simple cases.
Nothing alerts you, as from behind the wheel there is nothing to be warned about. The diesel Skoda Octavia will have felt perfectly normal on the way back from St Bartholomew's CofE Primary School, and they all do — which is the catch with petrol in a diesel rather than the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor mostly refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the wear with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, idles, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump keeps working without the lubrication its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us roughly how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.
It will start. It will pull away just fine. That's the problem, since a diesel on a thinned tank behaves normally while grinding the components its fuel should be protecting. So no, don't risk the trip home from The Wheatsheaf — leave the BMW 3 Series then phone.
None of it is the engine failing. That is the bit worth hearing, and it's why the normal Westhoughton Cricket Club call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Peugeot 308 drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, your idle rough and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it passes through; petrol dilutes it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure and not only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built leaks past clearances, delivery shows up weaker and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once the fuel is sorted.
Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left by Westhoughton Methodist Church. For a diesel Nissan Qashqai whose motor has turned, that is about the best version there is. Phone us, then let the vehicle stand with your ignition alone. Short helps, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had weakened fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the lines get rinsed and not just that tank cleared.
Can we serve your end of Dobb Brow?
Dobb Brow is a residential suburb, so our technicians head out to it and to the places by it on those same journeys: Westhoughton, Hoskers Nook, Hart Common, Daisy Hill and Wingates.
There are pages for nearly all locations across Greater Manchester, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from the list says nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come. Presuming is the thing to resist, especially on the border or somewhere your satnav fails. Call us to ask.
Look at the map for the area covered here. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground our technicians serve, and none of that needs the car to move to us.
Stranded at the kerb somewhere in Dobb Brow?
The opportunity to pull in anywhere safe doesn't fall to everybody. A common call for us and not an unusual one: noticed after setting off, ended up by the verge beside Coverdale Road or at a lay-by with your hazards flashing.
Wait by the motor while it's sensible to wait in it, and clear of the car when it is not. Don't restart it to reach a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into the fuel system. Carrying on does the vehicle far more harm than a technician driving out to a difficult place, and that's no problem for us.
So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles
under 3 miles from Dobb Brow, the M61 is what counts now. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power drains away, the idle turns uneven, and there may be smoke.
The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you ring. It changes what we bring.

When our technicians reach you around Dobb Brow: what follows
- We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers alter what the work really is.
- Away comes the contaminated fuel.
- Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later is not the thing that created the issue.
- The system gets bled, on clean diesel.
- It is run with new diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it's running smoothly.
That has your car ready to set off. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been spotted soon, and because all of this is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.
Dobb Brow AdBlue removal is a distinct matter
If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is unchanged — do not start the vehicle — yet the problem isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and residue in its place.
AdBlue removal around Dobb Brow has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. We cover both.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Dobb Brow
Our technicians can't put one number on this page frankly, as this job is not one job. What moves it:
- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a van.
The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.
Petrol in diesel queries from Dobb Brow drivers
I'm on a forecourt in Dobb Brow. Can you drain the car here?
Plenty of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Our engineers attend Sainsbury's and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the station's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if we can work there.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more frequently than people assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, emptying and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Your tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to put up with it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
You, and your car, still together?
The motor remains off.
Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
