Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Dog Village? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, all over Dog Village and the remainder of Devon. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When the motor has not turned over and the petrol is still inside the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Phone before all else happens, and you will know what comes after that.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • While you drive, the pump and your injectors wear down. That is why you don't start it, and why you do not trust it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point most people get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Leave the car's ignition alone also. Diesel performs two tasks: it burns, and before it combusts it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is commonly enough to prime the system, which carries that petrol out of the tank then into just those components.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A motor that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Station Road? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. An awkward place suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Before you call, get your position. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting EX5 3 — that's what determines whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Three replies shape the whole visit: the fuel you tipped in, the approximate quantity of it, plus if it has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Can petrol be drained from a diesel on a forecourt?

It kicks off at a forecourt, mostly. Regularly it wraps up there as well. We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's consent, so if you are still at Murco that is usually where the drain happens.

A filling station is the only setting the mistake can be halted before the engine has fired. Fuel drawn out of the tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and the fuel lines together with that tank. That's still not a calamity, and our engineers deal with it where the car stands. What determines it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

The staff will usually offer to wheel it away from the pump so the next motorist can get through. That's worth doing. Firing the car just to roll four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Dog Village

Straightforward, these ones, and the reason is the mileage: a mile at easy throttle uses hardly any fuel. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan somewhere in Dog Village, a boot loaded with shopping, and you sat outside Co-op Food — phone us. Exiting the spot isn't worth a restart. Your tank gets drained where it stands, your fuel lines flushed, clean diesel in, and you drive away.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both ready. Your BMW 3 Series will have felt entirely normal on the way back from Broadclyst Community Primary School — they all do, and that is the trap. Diesel into a petrol vehicle generally will not run at all: the driver stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel fires up, ticks over, moves off like nothing happened, while the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication your fuel should be giving it. No warning comes, because behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

The components that should be getting lubricated are wearing instead, and the motor gives no sign of that: a diesel on a diluted tank starts and pulls away perfectly well. Try the trip home from Red Lion Inn? No. Call us and leave the Nissan Qashqai where it is.

Your pump waits ahead of the injectors, and so whatever a wearing one sheds passes on with your fuel — which is why we are blunt about not driving on. Ring us, and leave your diesel Audi A3 where it is by A03.

Rattling, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That's a misfilled diesel Ford Kuga telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, by Broadclyst Leisure Centre or anywhere else, and never start the car to find a better place.

Areas our team serve near Dog Village

As a residential suburb, Dog Village gets a regular visit, and the places nearby go with it on that same journey: Broadclyst and Poltimore, West Clyst and Higher Burrowtown, Cranbrook.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and the majority of locations around Devon have a page of their own somewhere on the site. On the boundary, or somewhere your satnav misreads? Phone to ask rather than guessing.

This map shows the patch this page spans. We operate at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and the vehicle never needs to move to us.

Broken down on the roadside in Dog Village

A chance to stop anywhere suitable doesn't come to everybody. A routine call for us instead of an unusual one: realised after setting off, landed on the verge of Woodbury View or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Out of the vehicle if it is not wise to be in it, beside it when it is. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: restart the vehicle to get to somewhere better and that mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. However tricky the place, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that is far better for the car than pressing on.

Driven it already? Stop, then read below

under a mile from Dog Village, the M5 is what counts now. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 5 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you ring. It affects what our technicians bring.

A little about Dog Village

Dog Village is a suburban area located on the riverside in Devon, with a mix of semi-detached housing and a population of around 1297 residents. Dog Village sits near the city of Exeter, approximately 4.8 miles away, and is close to nearby places such as Broadclyst, Poltimore, and West Clyst. Dog Village has an elevation of 29 metres and is situated in a region with a gentle landscape, typical of the South West of England.

The visit around Dog Village, step by step

  • Our technicians establish what went in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
  • Out goes the polluted mixture.
  • Our technicians clean the fuel lines and clean your filter, so what's left in the system is not what created the problem.
  • Our engineers pour fresh diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • Once it's started, we confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

After that it's ready to set off. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Dog Village?

Never start it: that first rule stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal in Dog Village has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. Our technicians cover both.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Dog Village

Truthfully, no single number fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here's what changes it:

  • This is the key one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that proportion.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a technician.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Questions we get about petrol in diesel around Dog Village

Fuel drains on a Dog Village petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this happens. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Sainsbury's is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there's possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run counts far more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and keep it off. Driving is what moves the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable far more regularly than people expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, clearing and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different issue. So no. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, we drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with the vehicle?

That engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car after that. Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
