Down Field: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With that tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet started, nearly every job takes only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is decided in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Throughout Down Field and the rest of Cambridgeshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Call us before all else starts, so you'll see what follows from there.
What to do now about petrol in a diesel
- Do not crank it — and never rely on it when it does start. That is the thing drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel generally just won't run, and so the person stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives off perfectly well for a few miles. It isn't okay. It's eating into that fuel system while you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the ignition is left off as well — flick it on and you usually prime that system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for precisely those parts.
- Don't thin it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
- We would sooner travel to a difficult place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to sort out than a car that has not moved. On the verge on Windmill Close, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.
- Before you call, get your location. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts CB7 5 — that's what decides whether the van turns up or circles.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run. These three details determine the whole job.
Removing petrol from a diesel on the forecourt
Forecourts are where the work usually begins, and where a big chunk of it finishes. If you are still on the forecourt at Esso, that's typically where this drain happens — we work on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's permission.
Before the motor has started — a forecourt is the one spot this ends up stopped. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys determine how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a calamity, and we can still sort it out where your car is.
The staff will generally help you roll it out from the pump so the next customer can get through. That's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.
Down Field plus the places beside it
As a rural village, Down Field sees a steady visit, whilst its neighbours round about go along on that same journey: East Fen Common and Soham, Fordham and North Field, Wicken.
Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and most locations around Cambridgeshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Presuming is the thing to skip, particularly on a boundary or somewhere the satnav gets lost. Ring us and ask.
This map is the ground the page includes. Our technicians work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the car never needs to come to us.
Twenty to nine. At the gates of St Andrew's CofE Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand says unleaded. Turn the hazards on, leave the motor alone, and phone us. You could think three miles is nothing, in the Skoda Octavia or anything else — except that fuel is metered on demand, and a drive taken in a rush demands a great deal of it.
A diesel BMW 3 Series parked in the car park outside Cherry Tree with a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up till somebody drives it home. Park the car overnight then phone us in the morning. Nothing degrades while it sits. What we will ask about is if that drive there was short and chilly, since that's where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and whatever doesn't burn can work past the rings and into the engine oil.
Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and runnier fuel leaks past the precision components that are meant to build that pressure, and so the further a diesel Peugeot 308 drove, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and gutless on the way back is how the drive to Soham Meadow went, then, and your tank is where to look. Stop somewhere safe, turn off then call us.
Seldom the problem, the spot. On-street is the most common spot our engineers work, and a narrow parking spot is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from near Soham Village Sign, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can stand beside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your Audi A4 gets drained, the fuel filter changed where a usable one exists, the fuel lines cleaned and clean fuel put through the whole circuit — as by now the worst of that is in your lines, not that tank.
Clattering? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That is your wrongly fuelled Dacia Duster, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe close to Ross Peers Sports Centre, and leave the restarting alone.
Down Field: stuck wherever you parked
Not everybody gets a decent place to pull over. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Mistral Close since you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it is the ordinary kind.
Clear of the vehicle while it's not safe to sit inside, with it when it is. Don't restart it to reach a better place. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into your fuel system. Driving on causes the car far more harm than a van coming out to an awkward location, and that is no trouble for us.
A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?
Your M11 is the road which matters now, and it runs under 15 miles from Down Field. A misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are usually a loss of power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.
Never start it to reposition. Pull off at the next sensible junction and switch off. It affects what our technicians bring, so tell us when you phone: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.
A little about Down Field
Down Field is a small village in Cambridgeshire, situated inland at a low elevation of around 10 metres. Down Field lies near the city of Ely and other nearby places such as East Fen Common and Soham. Down Field has a population of approximately 888 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing. Down Field is located about 59.9 miles from London, making it a relatively rural community in the Eastern region.
Once our technicians reach you around Down Field: what we do
- Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
- That tank is cleared of everything.
- What is left in the system should not be what created the issue, so the fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleared.
- Our engineers pour fresh diesel in and prime your system.
- The motor is turned on and tested to confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.
The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed early, and since everything is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a garage.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Down Field is a different job
Don't fire it up: that first rule stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
We cover both, and AdBlue removal in Down Field has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more significant of the two.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Down Field
Our engineers cannot put one price on this page frankly, since this job is not one job. What shifts it:
- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much the tank takes.
- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?
The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.
Petrol in diesel queries from Down Field drivers
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Down Field?
Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Pace, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our technicians answer straight away.
Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?
Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?
Stop somewhere safe, turn off, then keep the vehicle off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more regularly than drivers expect.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out properly is not a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
What petrol has thinned isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, since we drain and flush your car wherever it is.
You, and your vehicle, still together?
Turned off is how the car remains.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later on. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
