Drefach: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over Drefach and the remainder of Carmarthenshire. The very first thing to do is not to start your engine. When the motor has not turned over and the petrol is still inside your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much went in. A single call to us will be plenty: our team will explain what follows after this. Try this right away.
What to do first about petrol in a diesel
- Do not fire it up — and don't believe it if it fires up. That is the bit motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel normally just can't run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, idles and moves off without complaint for several miles. It's not all right. It is grinding the fuel system as you drive.
- Turning your ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition off.
- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- Sit tight if it's safe to. Hazards on, motor off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Heol Cwmmawr, anywhere — a tricky location for us beats a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a motor that never moved.
- Before you call, have your position. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts SA14 7 — that is what decides whether our van turns up or circles.
- What was put in, roughly how many litres, and also if the car has fired — those three facts settle the entire visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Can petrol be taken from a diesel at a forecourt?
Plenty of this work begins at the pump, which means a large chunk of it gets finished there. Our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, and so if you are still at Independent that is usually where this drain takes place.
Before your engine has run — a forecourt is the single location this gets spotted. Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is switched on and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and your lines as well as the tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians sort it out where your car stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.
Move it out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets through the pump, and that is worth doing. Cranking it for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.
How much fuel the pump has drawn is what we are really asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the call our technicians like goes like this: diesel Renault Megane, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now turned off at The Food Warehouse.
Every restart primes your lines and drags more petrol through the filter then into your pump. So a misfilled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags outside the local primary school is an inconvenience, while the same vehicle restarted three more times to be helpful is a fuel system and not a tank. Someone will urge you to shift the car out of the gateway and sort it out later. Don't. Stay put, let everyone complain, and ring us.
Standing still, it gets no worse. Your pump isn't turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Drefach Park in that diesel Mercedes A-Class is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the motor to find more of that.
The pump sits upstream of the injectors, so whatever a wearing one gives off passes on with your fuel — which is why we are direct about not driving on. Phone us, and leave the diesel Citroen C3 where it is close to Neuadd y Gwendraeth.
Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That is a misfuelled diesel Volvo XC60 telling you what's wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, near Capel Seion or anywhere else, and don't restart the vehicle to find a better spot.
Can our technicians cover your part of Drefach?
Cwm-mawr, Tumble, Mynydd Cerrig, Foelgastell, Cefneithin — each of these on our journeys that carry us over to Drefach too, a village.
There are separate pages for nearly all towns around Carmarthenshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from that list means nothing at all about whether our technicians come. Contact us and ask instead of presuming — county lines particularly, and anywhere the satnav may get wrong.
Check this map for the area included here. Every bit of it is territory we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not move the vehicle anywhere.
Stuck by the kerbside somewhere in Drefach?
Some drivers get no safe spot to pull in at all. Set off, then realised? Finished up on the verge of Mary Street, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That is a routine call here. Not an odd one.
Okay right there? Wait with it. Not safe? Get out and away from it. Don't start it up to reach a nicer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that blend deeper into the fuel system. We'll bring our van to an awkward spot without any trouble, and for your car that's far better than driving on.
Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has moved
Here is where the M4 comes in — under 5 miles away from Drefach. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Take the first junction that is sensible, stop there, and never start it to reposition. Long drive? Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in the van.
Where's Drefach?
Drefach is a small village in Carmarthenshire, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of around 98 metres. Drefach lies near the communities of Cwm-mawr and Tumble, and is close to the scenic area of Mynydd Cerrig. Drefach has a population of approximately 942 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Drefach is located about 14.8 miles from Swansea, making it a commuter base for the city.
What we do when our technicians get to you in Drefach
- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses change what the work actually is.
- Our engineers empty your tank of the contaminated fuel.
- Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that created the issue.
- The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
- When it is started, our technicians check it runs correctly on new diesel.
At that point it is ready to pull away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Drefach?
The issue isn't the same, though the first instruction is — never fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.
Both are ours. There's a separate Drefach page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Drefach
Frankly, no single price fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what changes it:
- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much your tank can hold.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for our van.
The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.
Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Drefach
Fuel drains on a Drefach petrol station forecourt
Yes, and it's where a fair part of this work takes place. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something we answer on the spot.
Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?
Whether the motor has run counts far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. What decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through the system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. It is fixable much more frequently than drivers fear, even though driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
No. Carried out correctly, draining and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has diluted. That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to cope with it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.
You, and your vehicle, still together?
Shut off is the way the car remains.
If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
