Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Dringhouses? Don't Start It
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, all over Dringhouses and the rest of North Yorkshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While your engine has not yet been started and the fuel is still inside that tank, a drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Phone before all else begins, and you will hear what follows after that.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do next
- Never crank it. Turned on anyway? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally won't run, and so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off happily, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that muddled. It's not fine — your fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
- Diesel burns, and before it burns it protects — that high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition off as well: flicking it on is often sufficient to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into just those parts.
- Never tip diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it just leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- Wait where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has never moved is the simplest one to sort, and our team would rather drive to an odd spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Dante Way, turn your hazards on and keep the vehicle there.
- Have your location prepared before you phone. A postcode beginning YO24 1 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van arriving and our van circling.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, about how much, and whether the engine has started. These three answers settle your whole job.
Removing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt
The job begins at a pump, mostly. Often enough the job wraps up on site too. The drain usually happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Applegreen? Given the owner's permission, that's a place our technicians work, and regularly.
No place but a garage can this be caught with your engine still unstarted. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the key decide how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a calamity, and our engineers can still sort it out where the vehicle is.
Away from the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the staff help you roll the car. Very much worth it. Starting it for four vehicle lengths? No.
We're in car parks like the one outside Lidl a lot, and it is almost never the fuel that complicates them. It is the bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height limit at the entrance, which settles if our van gets to you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you call, and which way the vehicle is facing. If there is no space to work alongside that Renault Megane, we move it without the engine. That's not fussiness over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of that tank toward your pump, and a car shifted twice for a better space is gradually a harder job than one no one touched.
What our technicians will ask is whether that trip there was brief and chilly, since that is where petrol is least able to burn correctly — and anything that doesn't burn can get past the piston rings then into the sump. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel BMW 3 Series parked in the parking area at Dringhouses Sports and Social Club carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing degrades whilst it stands, and so park the car overnight and ring us first thing.
Nothing is getting worse whilst it sits. Whatever the diesel Nissan Qashqai did on the way to Dringhouses Sports Club, it's doing none of that now: your pump isn't turning. So take your time — but don't drive the car home to buy yourself any.
Three things help when you phone from close to Dringhouses Library: which side the filler is on, whether our van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common spot our engineers work, and so the location itself is rarely the problem — we would much rather deal with a narrow parking spot than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain your Audi A4, change your filter where there's a workable one, flush the fuel lines then put clean fuel through the entire circuit, since by this point the worst of it is sitting in your lines instead of in that tank.
The filter, the lines, your pump and the rail: that is where the mix is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with your tank contents. So that tank is not where most of the trouble waits by this point, and a diesel Kia Sportage that made it near Goddards Garden needs your circuit cleared instead of cleared.
Coverage in Dringhouses
Dringhouses is a residential suburb, so we get out to the town and to the places around it on those same journeys: Knavesmire, South Bank, Woodthorpe, Low Field and Holgate.
We still come. Those names above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for most towns across North Yorkshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Contact us and enquire rather than presuming — borders above all, and wherever your satnav might misread.
That map shows the area the page covers. We operate at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to come to us.
Roadside breakdowns around Dringhouses
Not everyone has a sensible place to pull over. Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of North Eastern Terrace as you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call so often that it's the usual kind.
Wait beside your car while it's sensible to sit in it, but out of it if it isn't. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. A van heading to an inconvenient spot is no bother for us, and it is a lot better for the car than pressing on.
Run it already? Pull in, then check below
Here is where the A1(M) counts, under 15 miles from Dringhouses. A misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are usually a drop in power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a clean stop.
Take the next exit that's sensible, stop there, and don't restart the vehicle to move it. It changes what our technicians bring, and so tell us when you call: on a longer drive — anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.
Dringhouses itself
Dringhouses is a suburban area located near the city of York in North Yorkshire, sitting at an elevation of around 15 metres above sea level. Dringhouses is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock and is situated close to nearby places such as Knavesmire and South Bank. Dringhouses has a population of approximately 4266 residents and is positioned about 1.8 miles from York city centre. Dringhouses is also near Woodthorpe, another local area.
Once our technicians reach you around Dringhouses: what we do
- The replies shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.
- The tank is emptied completely.
- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
- The system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
- After it is started, our technicians make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.
Your car is then ready for you to pull away. Our technicians do all of this wherever your car has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.
Dringhouses AdBlue removal is a separate job
Do not crank it: that opening instruction stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.
Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal around Dringhouses has its own page with the full story — including why it is often the more significant of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Dringhouses
One number would not be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much that tank takes.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a van.
A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and if it has run. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.
Dringhouses motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
Fuel drains on a Dringhouses petrol station forecourt
A fair share of this work gets done there, so yes. Our engineers work at Tesco and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Whether your motor has run counts a lot more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable far more frequently than drivers fear.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
It's not a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Afterwards? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.
You, and your car, still together?
Don't turn it back on.
Switch it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than drivers expect.
