Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Drumlaghy?

If you have not turned on your engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a car requires while the petrol is still in your tank and your engine has not yet run, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Drumlaghy or the rest of County Fermanagh, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. Our technicians will explain what the following part will be. Ring us — that goes before anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Do not crank it — and don't trust it if it runs. This is the bit motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor given diesel typically just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, ticks over and drives off just fine for a few miles. It's not all right. It's grinding your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it lubricates — your high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition be too: turning it on is frequently sufficient to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into just those components.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Our team would rather get to an awkward place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is easier to handle than a vehicle that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Rock Street, that means hazards on then leave the car.
  • A van arriving instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning BT92 1, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Get both prepared before you ring.
  • What got in, roughly how much, plus whether the car has run — those three facts determine the full call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Draining petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

Most of this job starts at the pump, meaning a fair share of it ends up done on site. The drain generally happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station? Given the owner's consent, that's somewhere our technicians work, and routinely.

No place but the forecourt can the mistake be halted with the engine still unstarted. We can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and driven there, and that drew fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past that tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key are what determine that.

The attendants will generally happily wheel it away from the pump so the next motorist can get past. It is worth doing. Starting it just to roll four car lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Drumlaghy

The phone call we want sounds like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, a few litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now turned off outside the local shops. What we're really asking is how much fuel the pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

You set off at the end, once we have fired it up and checked it runs properly on fresh diesel, with the fuel system primed. Before that, in the car park at the pub in the village, the polluted fuel comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter comes off where your Peugeot 3008 has a replaceable one. Everything begins with three questions when our engineers reach the vehicle: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

Your pump isn't turning, so whatever your diesel Audi A3 did on the way to the green space at the edge of the village, none of that is going on now. Nothing gets worse while it waits. Take your time over this — but never drive it home to buy any.

Unfamiliar spots are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical instead of careless: the narrower petrol nozzle goes into a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Topped up by a street just off the centre without thinking, in a diesel Ford Fiesta you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone notices, and miles is what determines how much petrol reaches the fuel injectors.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went soft, the idle turned lumpy, and your diesel Vauxhall Insignia is now sitting close to the far end of the built-up part. That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully rather than the motor giving up — and as there's no dashboard light for it, motors in that position typically get driven again before anybody calls. Don't. Switch it off and call us.

Places our vans cover near Drumlaghy

The same trips get us to Florencecourt, Skea, Arney, Macken and Letterbreen besides Drumlaghy, which is a small village.

We still come. Those names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all locations in County Fermanagh, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Phone and ask instead of presuming, above all when you're on a boundary or anywhere a satnav misreads.

Use our map for the area shown here. The vehicle never needs to come to us. We work over the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded at the roadside in Drumlaghy

The chance to pull in somewhere sensible does not come to everyone. Set off, then realised? Ended up along the verge beside Crom Street, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That is a routine call here. Not an unusual one.

Whether you remain beside the car or step clear of it rests on if sitting nearby seems sensible. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mix further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Driving on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van driving out to an awkward spot, and that is no trouble for us.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where your M77 comes in — over 50 miles from Drumlaghy. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power drains away, your idle gets rough, and there may be smoke.

Don't start it to reposition. Get off at the next sensible junction then turn off. On a longer run — anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you ring. It affects what our technicians bring.

Where is Drumlaghy?

Drumlaghy is a small locality in County Fermanagh, situated inland at an elevation of 67 metres. Drumlaghy lies near the villages of Florencecourt and Skea, and is approximately 42.9 miles from Armagh. Drumlaghy has a population of around 648 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Drumlaghy is also relatively distant from London, at around 368.8 miles away.

The job in Drumlaghy, step by step

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The polluted mixture is drawn out of your tank.
  • What is left in your system should not be what started the trouble, so your fuel lines get cleaned and the filter cleaned.
  • Our engineers put fresh diesel in and bleed your system.
  • After it's started, we check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That leaves it ready to pull away. We do all of it wherever your car has ended up, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been caught early, it's very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Drumlaghy?

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — don't start the car — yet this issue isn't. The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up instead.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Drumlaghy page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Drumlaghy?

One figure wouldn't be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much your tank holds.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely reach your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Questions we hear about petrol in diesel around Drumlaghy

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Drumlaghy?

Plenty of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's consent our engineers attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town all the time.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more often than drivers fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a modification and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. The pump still has to put up with it, because the tank still has petrol in it later on.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Is the car still with you?

Never turn your engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. This is recoverable from far more regularly than people fear, and a parked, cold motor is the best position to be in.
