Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Dundrod?

With your tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet run, almost every job needs only a drain, so leave the motor off. That outcome is settled in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, and not by the amount that went in. Across Dundrod and the rest of County Antrim, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Ring us and then our team can show you what follows next before you attempt much else.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not fire it up. Turned on all the same? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car normally can't run, so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off normally, for a few miles. Drivers get that backwards. It's not okay — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition remains off as well — turn it on and you frequently prime the system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for just those components.
  • Do not add diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage as that advice suggests, and topping up clears nothing — it only gives you a fuller tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort, and our team would sooner travel to a tricky place than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Chalet Road, put those hazards on then keep it there.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode starting BT29 4, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than showing up.
  • Three replies determine your whole call-out: the stuff you put in, the rough measure involved, plus whether anything has been turning since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

How far you drove is what our technicians care about, not how long your motor has been stood — and this is why. Diesel has two roles on its way through a motor: it burns, and before burning it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a quick refuel on the drive in, the realisation coming close to eleven, and a diesel Renault Megane standing at the nearest station since quarter past eight means those few miles were driven with your pump working on a fluid stripped of most of its protection. Call us and leave the car right where it is.

The difficult part is the bay, not your fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height bar on the way in that decides whether a van can reach you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one at the local shops, tell us how much clearance there is round you and which way round the vehicle is. Those our technicians visit often. Should there be no room to work alongside your diesel Volkswagen Passat, it gets moved with the engine off, and not out of fussiness over a couple of seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of the mix leaves that tank for your pump, and two shunts into a better bay have gradually made a bigger job of what was merely a car sitting still.

The pump isn't turning, and so whatever your diesel Peugeot 3008 did on the way to the green space at the edge of the village, none of that is happening now. Nothing is getting worse while it stands. Take your time over this — but don't drive it home to buy any.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, a ragged idle, knocking: that is a wrongly fuelled diesel Audi A3 telling you what is wrong. Don't restart it to find a better location — switch off where you have stopped, close to a street just off the centre or anywhere else.

That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the motor failing — and with no dashboard light for it, motors in that position usually get driven once more before anybody phones. Don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned uneven, and a diesel Ford Fiesta now resting by the far end of the built-up part. Switch the car off and phone us.

Clearing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

A good chunk of the job ends up done at the pump, as that's where it usually kicks off. Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that is typically where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the owner.

A forecourt is the one setting it is spotted before your engine has run. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys.

Attendants will generally chip in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Accept the assistance. Rolling the car four lengths does not warrant starting the engine.

Dundrod and the villages near it

Dundrod is a small village, so our vans head out to it and to anywhere by it on the usual runs: Stoneyford, Killead, Glenavy, Crumlin and Dunadry.

There are dedicated pages for most places across County Antrim, and the ones listed above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from this list means nothing whatsoever about if we come. Ring us to ask instead of assuming, especially if you're on the border or anywhere your satnav struggles with.

This map shows the ground this page covers. All of it is ground our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't bring your car anywhere.

Stuck on the kerbside somewhere in Dundrod?

Not everyone gets a chance to pull over somewhere sensible. A normal call for us and not a rare one: noticed after setting off, ended up by the verge on North Crescent or in a lay-by with your hazards on.

Out of the car when it is not safe to be inside, by it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. We will send our van to an inconvenient location without any trouble, and for the vehicle that's much better than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but your car has gone

Here is where the M77 comes in — over 50 miles from Dundrod. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power falls away, the idle gets uneven, and there may be smoke.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. It changes what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

All about Dundrod

Dundrod is a small locality in County Antrim, situated inland at an elevation of 122 metres, approximately 7.6 miles from Belfast. Dundrod is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock and is surrounded by nearby places such as Stoneyford, Killead, and Glenavy. Dundrod has a population of around 650 residents and is located within the wider Belfast urban area.

Once our technicians reach you in Dundrod: what happens

  • Our engineers establish what got in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • Our engineers empty the tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • Our engineers clean the fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, so what's remaining in the fuel system isn't what started the problem.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Your engine is fired up and tested to be sure it runs properly on new diesel.

That has your car ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been caught soon, and because all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Dundrod AdBlue removal is a different problem

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is the same — do not crank it — but this fault is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the protection the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Dundrod page. Both are ours to handle.

Dundrod costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Honestly, no single price fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what moves it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a technician.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. If it isn't urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Dundrod drivers

Fuel drains on a Dundrod petrol station forecourt

A fair part of this work takes place there, so yes. We work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop somewhere safe, turn off, then leave the car off. Driving moves the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Is the car still with you?

The motor remains off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off and keep it off. A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than motorists expect.
