Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Dunfermline? Don't Start It

With the tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet run, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That outcome is decided in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that went in. Across Dunfermline and the rest of Fife, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Ring us before everything else starts, and you will see what happens from there.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a couple of miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't fire it up. And if started, don't trust it: that fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it greases — the high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition off too: switching it on is commonly enough to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into precisely those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies — so do not tip diesel on top to thin it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that hasn't moved is the simplest one to deal with, and we would much rather get to an awkward location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Kirkgate, turn your hazards on and keep the car there.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode that starts KY12 7, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than showing up.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, about how many litres, plus whether the engine has started. These three facts settle the whole call-out.

Phone us before you fetch the car. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Golf this morning, and the car outside Dunfermline City ever since? Then the afternoon has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is dormant, and any harm was done on the trip in, when your pump was taking diesel that petrol had thinned.

We're in car parks like the one at Ayt Foods often, and it is hardly ever your fuel that complicates them. It is that bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. At times a height bar at the entrance, which settles if our van reaches you at all. So say how boxed in you are when you phone, and which way your car is pointing. If there is no space to work next to your Renault Clio, our engineers shift it without the motor. That isn't fuss over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of that tank toward your pump, and a vehicle moved twice for a better space is silently a bigger job than one nobody touched.

A diesel pump supplies fuel to demand, and a frantic morning drive needs plenty — so three miles in the Nissan Qashqai feels like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine by the local primary school, running late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, motor off, phone.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and parked your diesel Peugeot 3008 up close to Dunfermline Staircase a few hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us and leave the car off. The short hop really assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so weakened fuel has got to the filter and your pump — which is why our technicians rinse the fuel lines rather than only emptying that tank.

That deadness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the motor failing — and with no dashboard light for it, vehicles in that position generally get driven a second time before somebody phones. Please don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned uneven, and a diesel Vauxhall Astra now waiting by St Margaret's Cave. Turn the car off and phone us.

At the forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

A fair share of the job is finished at a pump, because that is where it usually begins. We work on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's consent, so if you're still at Tesco that's typically where the drain gets done.

At the forecourt, the mistake gets spotted with your motor never started, and no place else manages it. The few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key determine how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where your car is.

Move the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they usually will. The next driver gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Rolling it four bays doesn't warrant cranking the motor.

Parts our vans serve near Dunfermline

The same runs take us to Abbey Parks, Castleblair Park, Gardeners Lands, Beveridgewell and Baldridgeburn as well as Dunfermline, which is a coastal city.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and nearly all locations around Fife have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Call us and check instead of guessing, above all where you're on the border or anywhere your phone misreads.

The map shows the area this page includes. The car never needs to come to us. We work over every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded on the kerbside near Dunfermline

Not everyone has a sensible spot to pull over. Set off, then noticed? Landed by the verge of High Street, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That's a common call here. Not an odd one.

Fine where you are? Remain beside it. Not safe? Get out and clear of it. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: restart the car to get to somewhere better and that mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. We will take our van to a tricky spot without any trouble, and for your car that's far better than pressing on.

Run it already? Stop, and see below

The A823(M) is the one which counts here, and it sits under 3 miles from Dunfermline. A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they arrive are generally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you ring. It alters what we bring.

A bit about Dunfermline

Dunfermline is a city situated on the coastal fringe of Fife, with a mix of flat and other types of housing, and is located approximately 96 metres above sea level. Dunfermline sits near the Firth of Forth, close to several local parks, including Abbey Parks and Castleblair Park. Dunfermline is also near Gardeners Lands and has a population of around 41412 people. Dunfermline is within commuting distance of Edinburgh, which is around 13.4 miles away.

What happens when our technicians get to you around Dunfermline

  • The replies change the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and whether the motor has run.
  • Away goes the polluted fuel.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that created the issue.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • After it's started, we check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been spotted quickly, and as all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Dunfermline

Don't fire it up: that opening instruction applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Dunfermline page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Dunfermline

Our technicians cannot put one number on this page frankly, as the job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much the tank holds.
  • Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Dunfermline

I'm on a forecourt in Dunfermline. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this gets done. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been pulled through the system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving is what moves the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable far more frequently than drivers expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has diluted. That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Keep the car shut off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the car stay that way. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
