Petrol in a Diesel Car in Dunloy
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Dunloy and the remainder of County Antrim. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. When the motor has not turned over and the fuel is still in the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Contact us before all else starts, so you will know what comes after that.
Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Don't crank it — and do not depend on it if it starts. Here is the bit drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel usually just can't run, and so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, idles and moves off perfectly well for a couple of miles. It is not fine. It is eating into your fuel system while you drive.
- Leave the car's ignition alone also. Diesel has two tasks: it ignites, and before it combusts it greases that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching your ignition on is commonly enough to prime the system, which moves the petrol out of your tank and into exactly those parts.
- Do not water down it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
- Stay put if it's sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Wallace Cottages, anywhere — a tricky place for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a car that never shifted.
- Our van turning up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning BT44 9, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you phone.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what got in, about how many litres, and if the car has been turned over. The answers shape everything that comes after.
Quarter past eight, a quick fill-up on the road in, and it dawns on you around eleven — by which time the diesel Volkswagen Passat has been parked at the nearest station for three hours. Phone and keep it precisely where it stands. The journey in is the part that is key most, because diesel has two jobs on its way through a motor: it ignites, and before it burns it protects its injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. So those few miles were driven with the pump running on a liquid that had lost a great deal of the protection it is made for — which is why the question our engineers ask is how far you drove, not how long your motor has been sitting.
How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both ready. Your Peugeot 308 will have seemed completely usual on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that is the snag. Diesel into a petrol car mostly won't run at all: the driver stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel starts, ticks over, moves off like nothing happened, whilst your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, because behind the wheel nothing appears wrong.
Out there fine, back sluggish. If that was the drive to the green space at the edge of the village, look at your tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the fine clearances meant to build injection pressure — so every extra mile the diesel Ford Focus covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, turn off, call us.
Why so blunt about leaving your keys alone? Since your pump is before the fuel injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it sheds downstream with the fuel. Phone us. Leave the Mercedes C-Class close to the centre.
Strange locations are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical instead of careless: the slimmer petrol nozzle slides into a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Topped up close to a street just off the centre without thinking, in a diesel Citroen C3 you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anybody spots it, and mileage is what decides how much petrol reaches the injectors.
Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel
Plenty of this work starts at the pump, which means a large share of that gets completed at one. The drain usually takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station? Given the owner's agreement, that is a place our engineers work, and routinely.
Nowhere other than the forecourt can it be stopped with your engine still unstarted. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys.
The staff will normally happily wheel the car away from the pump so the next customer can get through. That is worth doing. Rolling it four spaces doesn't merit firing it.
Can our technicians cover your part of Dunloy?
Those same rounds take us to Finvoy, Rasharkin, Cloughmills, Loughguile and Corkey besides Dunloy, which is a small village.
There are pages for nearly all towns around County Antrim, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from the list means nothing at all about if we come. Close to a border, or anywhere a satnav misreads? Phone to ask rather than guessing.
The ground this page covers appears on our map. We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and your car doesn't need to move to us.
Stuck on the kerbside near Dunloy
Some drivers get no safe spot to stop at all. If you noticed after setting off and finished up along the verge on B842, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that's a routine call for us instead of an unusual one.
Stay by your car if it is safe to sit there, but clear of it if it is not. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. However inconvenient the spot, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that is much better for your car than pressing on.
Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has moved
Here is where the M77 comes into it — over 50 miles from Dunloy. A loss of power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.
Do not start it to reposition. Pull off at the first sensible junction then turn off. On a longer run — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors, and tell us when you phone. It affects what our engineers bring.
A bit about Dunloy

What our technicians do when we arrive with you in Dunloy
- The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what went in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.
- Out comes the tainted mixture.
- What is remaining in your system shouldn't be what created the problem, and so your fuel lines get rinsed and your filter cleared.
- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
- Our technicians turn it on and make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.
The car is then ready for you to pull away. Our engineers do all of this wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, it is very unusual for there to be permanent damage.
A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Dunloy
If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is the same — don't fire it up — but this issue is not. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.
AdBlue removal around Dunloy has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. Our technicians handle both.
Dunloy prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
We can't put one number on this page honestly, as this job isn't one job. What moves it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?
Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range. If it's not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Dunloy
I am on a forecourt around Dunloy. Can you drain the vehicle here?
Yes, and it is where a fair share of this work gets done. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the site's consent we work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby all the time.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether your motor has run matters a lot more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car
Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable a lot more regularly than motorists expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out properly is not an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. The pump still has to live with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.
Standing next to it?
Keep it turned off.
Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then let it stay that way. A still, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists expect.
