Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Dunnington? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Dunnington and the remainder of North Yorkshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When your engine has not yet turned over and the petrol is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much got in. A single ring to us will be plenty: our team will tell you what happens after this. Make it straight away.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a couple of miles. People have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't crank it. And once started, never rely on it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel does two jobs: it ignites, and before it combusts it protects the injection pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is usually sufficient to prime that system, which pulls the petrol out of the tank then into just those parts.
  • Never dilute it. Diesel tipped on top removes nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Stay put if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Common Road, anywhere — a tricky spot for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a motor that never moved.
  • A van showing up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting YO19 5, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Get both prepared before you phone.
  • Three answers determine the whole call-out: the fuel you poured in, the approximate amount of it, and if it has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

At the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

A good portion of this job is finished at the pump, as that's where it usually begins. Still at Esso? Then that is typically where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the owner.

A forecourt is the only place this is caught before your motor has fired. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the keys decide how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter need rinsing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still put it right where the vehicle is.

The attendants will usually help you move the vehicle away from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. That's worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Dunnington

Any start primes your fuel system and sucks more of the mixture out of your tank and on to the pump — which is why a vehicle moved twice into a nicer bay has quietly grown into a worse job than one left just where it stopped. So if our technicians cannot work alongside your diesel Peugeot 308, we shift the car without running it. None of that is pedantry about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at The Co-operative Food our technicians attend frequently, and the fuel is seldom the awkward part: that bay is. Motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height bar at the way in determining if our van gets to you at all. Tell us how hemmed in you are, and which way the car points.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of Dunnington Church of England Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand says unleaded. Turn the hazard lights on, leave your motor alone, and call us. You might think three miles is nothing, in your Nissan Qashqai or anything else — except that fuel is metered to demand, and a dash taken in a hurry needs a great deal of it.

Your pump is not turning, so whatever the diesel Vauxhall Astra did on the way to Hassacarr Nature Reserve, none of that is going on now. Nothing gets worse whilst it stands. Take your time over this — but do not drive the vehicle home to buy any.

Calling from close to Dunnington Community Library? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the car it is on. Room for a technician next to you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself scarcely matters: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a cramped spot than a car somebody has driven somewhere quicker. Then it is a drain for the Audi A6, a filter change where there's one worth changing, lines purged, fresh fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in the fuel lines and not your tank.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle uneven, and your diesel Citroen C4 Picasso is parked up by Dunnington Methodist Church. The engine isn't giving up — that sluggishness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so motors like yours generally get driven a second time before anybody picks up the phone. Do not. Off, then phone us.

Do our engineers reach your part of Dunnington?

The same journeys get us to Holtby, Grimston, Murton, Warthill and Kexby besides Dunnington, which is a rural village.

Our technicians still come. Those places above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all locations in North Yorkshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Call us to ask instead of presuming, above all where you are on a border or somewhere a satnav gets wrong.

See this map for the area shown on this page. Our technicians work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and your car doesn't need to move to us.

Kerbside stops in Dunnington

The chance to stop somewhere sensible does not come to everybody. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on York Street since you worked it out after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it's the usual kind.

Sit by the car if it's sensible to sit in it, but clear of the car if it isn't. Don't fire up your motor to limp it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the blend further into the system. Our van coming to a difficult spot is no trouble for us, and it is a lot better for your car than driving on.

Driven it already? Pull in, then see this

under 25 miles out of Dunnington, the local A1(M) is what matters here. A misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are usually lost power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors, and mention it when you phone. It changes what our technicians bring.

Dunnington itself

Dunnington is a village in North Yorkshire, situated approximately 4 miles from the city of York, and Dunnington lies in a relatively low-lying area at an elevation of around 17 metres. Dunnington is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and Dunnington is close to other nearby villages such as Holtby and Grimston. Dunnington has a population of around 2515 people and Dunnington is located inland, about 173 miles north of London.

Our job in Dunnington, step by step

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Your tank is cleared of everything.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what started the trouble, so your fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleared.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running smoothly.

After that it is ready to pull away. We do everything wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been caught early, it's very unusual for there to be permanent damage.

A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Dunnington

Don't start it: that opening step holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Dunnington page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Dunnington

We can't put one figure on this page truthfully, since the job is not one job. What moves it:

  • This is the big one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much that tank can hold.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely get to the car and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel queries from Dunnington drivers

At a petrol station in Dunnington, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it's where a fair part of this work gets done. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BATA Ltd is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run counts a lot more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through your fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. It is fixable far more frequently than people expect, even though driving is what moves the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate problem. So no. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to take it to a main dealer, as we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Standing next to it?

The engine stays off.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Dunnington and across North Yorkshire.
