Petrol in Diesel

Duporth: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Duporth and the remainder of Cornwall. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While the motor has not yet run and the petrol is still sitting in the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Phone so we can tell you what comes after that before you do much else.

What to do next about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will typically refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — all right for several miles. People have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not start the car. And once started, don't depend on it: that fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it greases — that injection pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition be too: flicking it on is usually sufficient to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into exactly those components.
  • Don't add diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage as that advice presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it only hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A motor that has not moved is the easiest one to sort, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Duporth Road? Hazards on, then leave the car there. A tricky spot suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Check where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning PL26 6, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, roughly how much, and also whether your car has started. These three replies decide the full job.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

The job kicks off at a pump, typically. Regularly the job wraps up at one as well. The drain typically happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Asda? Given the owner's agreement, that is a place our technicians work, and routinely.

Nowhere except a garage can it be stopped with your motor still unrun. Our engineers can still put it right where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and moved there, and that sucked fuel through your filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to reach past the tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the keys are what determine that.

Staff will normally help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Accept the help. Starting the car just for four car lengths? No.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Duporth

We'll come to you, clear your tank, purge the fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into your diesel Nissan Qashqai around Duporth and you are stranded at Asda with a boot full of shopping, phone us — and do not crank it once more to leave the spot. A mile or so at gentle throttle uses very little fuel, so these are usually the easy ones.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, and so whatever happened on the way to Porthpean Golf Club in that diesel Mercedes E-Class is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on your engine to find more of that.

Three things help when you call from near Duporth Beach: which side the filler is on, whether a van can park next to without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place our engineers work, and so the location itself is rarely the issue — we'd much rather deal with a tight parking space than with a vehicle that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We will drain the Vauxhall Astra, change the filter where there's a serviceable one, flush the lines and put clean fuel through the full circuit, because by this point the worst of that is resting in your lines instead of in your tank.

New spots are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical not slapdash: the smaller petrol nozzle fits a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Topped up close to Old Mine without thinking, in a diesel Ford Kuga you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody spots it, and mileage is what determines how much petrol reaches the fuel injectors.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle uneven, and your diesel Volkswagen Polo is parked up near Shipwreck Treasure Museum. The motor isn't failing — that softness is fuel that won't build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so cars like yours generally get driven once more before somebody picks up the phone. Don't. Off, and call us.

Coverage near Duporth

As a coastal village, Duporth gets a steady visit, while its neighbours round about go along on the same journey: Charlestown and Lower Porthpean, Mount Charles and Higher Porthpean, Holmbush.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and the majority of towns across Cornwall have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Guessing is the habit to skip, above all on the border or anywhere the satnav goes wrong. Call us and ask.

Look at the map for the area included on this page. We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of that, and your vehicle doesn't need to come to us.

Duporth: stranded where you pulled up

Not everybody has the opportunity to pull in anywhere suitable. A normal call for us instead of an odd one: noticed after setting off, ended up on the verge on Duporth Bay or at a lay-by with your hazards on.

Safe where you are? Sit with it. Not okay? Get out and away from it. Don't fire it up to reach a better spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into the system. However tricky the location, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that is far better for the car than driving on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

over 50 miles from Duporth, the M5 is what matters here. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power drains away, the idle gets lumpy, and there may be smoke.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It affects what our technicians bring.

A bit about Duporth

Duporth is a small coastal village in Cornwall, situated near the town of Charlestown and overlooking the sea. Duporth sits at an elevation of 51 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Duporth is located approximately 13 miles from Truro, the nearest city, and is part of the wider South West region of England.

Once we get to you around Duporth: what we do

  • We establish what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
  • We drain that tank of the tainted mixture.
  • Our technicians rinse the lines and clean the fuel filter, so what is left in the system is not what caused the issue.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • It's started with clean diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running smoothly.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. We do all of it wherever the car has ended up, which means it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, it is very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Duporth is a separate problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your engine stays off — while the problem under it's a separate one altogether. The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Duporth has its own page with the details — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Duporth?

What moves the price is set out below, because the job is not one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single number on this page.

  • Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much your tank can hold.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can sensibly reach the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and if your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it isn't urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Duporth motorists

Fuel drains on a Duporth petrol station forecourt

A large part of this work happens there, so yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there's possible.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving shifts the issue along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate fault and it does not restore what petrol has weakened. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Don't turn your engine back on.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and let the car remain that way. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
