Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Durham? Don't Start It
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, all over Durham and the remainder of Durham. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When your engine has not turned over and the petrol is still sitting in the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much got in. One call to us will be plenty: our engineers will explain what happens next. Do this right away.
The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear down. This is why you don't fire it up, and why you do not depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point drivers get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.
- Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition is left off as well — switch it on and you usually prime that system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for exactly those components.
- Do not add diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice implies, and topping up takes out nothing — it just hands you a larger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has not moved is the quickest one to handle, and we would much rather come to a difficult location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on North Road, turn those hazards on and leave the car there.
- Know where you are before calling. A postcode beginning DH1 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.
- Three answers determine your whole visit: the stuff you put in, the approximate volume involved, plus whether it has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.
Can petrol be taken from your diesel at a forecourt?
Most of the job starts at a pump, meaning a large chunk of that ends up done at one. Still at Esso? Then that's typically where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the station.
Nowhere but a forecourt can this be spotted with your motor still untouched. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys.
Clear of the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the vehicle. Very much worth it. Cranking the car over four vehicle lengths? Never.
The phone call our engineers like runs like this: diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, some litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now turned off outside Heron Foods. What we're actually asking is how much fuel the pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.
A diesel pump supplies fuel on demand, and a hurried morning drive needs plenty — so three miles in your Skoda Octavia sounds like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine at the gates of St Margaret's Church of England Primary School, running late, a receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, ignition off, call us.
Our engineers clean your lines instead of only draining your tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already got to the filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive truly assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Mercedes E-Class parked up by North Road Methodist Church a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Ring us and leave it off.
Turn off where you have stopped, and do not start it to find somewhere better — near St Godric's or anywhere at all. Clattering, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a dead throttle are a misfilled diesel Audi A3 telling you what's wrong.
No dashboard light exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position generally get driven again before anybody calls. Do not be one of them. The throttle went soft and the idle turned lumpy after a few streets, and your diesel Vauxhall Astra is now sitting near 20,000th Mast on East Coast Main Line. Sluggishness there means fuel that cannot build pressure properly instead of a motor packing up. Turn off. Call us.
Durham plus the towns next to it
Those same runs get us to Western Hill, The Sands, North End, Nevilles Cross and Aykley Heads along with Durham, which is a cathedral city.
There are dedicated pages for most towns across Durham, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being left off the list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come. On the border, or somewhere your phone can't find? Contact us to enquire rather than guessing.
The area the page includes is on the map. All of it is territory our technicians serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not bring your vehicle anywhere.
Stuck on the kerbside in Durham
Not everyone has the opportunity to pull over anywhere sensible. A common call for us and not a rare one: noticed after setting off, finished up on the verge of St Godric's Road or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.
Remain beside the motor when it's safe to sit inside, yet out of it if it is not. Don't restart the engine to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into the fuel system. Pressing on does the car far more harm than a technician coming out to an awkward spot, and that is no problem for us.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
under 3 miles from Durham, the local A1(M) is what matters here. A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they come are generally a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.
The first sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer run — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors, and mention it when you call. It alters what our technicians bring.
Durham itself
Durham is a city situated on the River Wear in north-east England, with a population of around 43793 people. Durham sits at an elevation of 53 metres, surrounded by nearby places such as Western Hill and The Sands. Durham is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is located near the city of Sunderland, approximately 11.7 miles away. Durham is also about 233.9 miles north of London.
Our visit in Durham, step by step
- The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and whether the motor has run.
- The polluted fuel is pulled from that tank.
- What is left in the system should not be what created the issue, and so the fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleaned.
- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
- It is run with clean diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it's running smoothly.
After that it is ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been caught early, and because all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a garage.
Durham AdBlue removal is a different problem
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor remains off — while this issue under it's a different one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Both are ours. There's a separate Durham page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
Durham pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
What moves the figure is laid out below, because the job isn't one job and our engineers cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.
- This is the main one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much your tank can hold.
- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?
Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.
Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Durham
I'm on a forecourt in Durham. Can you drain the car on the spot?
Yes, and it is where a big share of this work takes place. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there is possible.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that blend has been pulled through your fuel system.
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more often than motorists expect.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave it switched off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate problem and it doesn't put back what petrol has thinned. The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to cope with it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.
Waiting next to it?
Your engine stays off.
Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
