Petrol in a Diesel Car in Durrants: What Happens Now
Not for a moment, and not for moving it: your engine remains off. Pause there. Emptied then cleaned, right where it is: that is normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it remains that simple rests on the minutes ahead more than on anything else. Anywhere you happen to be around Durrants, this is how things go from now.
Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off
First, the following — following this order.
- Ignition off, keys out. Switched on, the ignition can prime your system — and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank into the components it harms.
- A bigger tank of the same mixture is all adding diesel gives you, because it takes out nothing. So no extra diesel.
- Being seen comes first near moving traffic: put the hazard lights on, and only then deal with anything else.
- By hand, never under your engine: that is how it comes off the pump. Ask the forecourt staff to help you roll, whatever the distance.
- Keep the receipt. It says which fuel was put in and about how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.
Noticed on the move? Get off at the next exit if you are on the Waterlooville Bypass, under 3 miles from Durrants, and stop somewhere safe — not at the services further on. Stage one comes after that.
Each Durrants fuel drain starts here: has your engine run?
From this stage on, everything comes down to a single answer.
If your engine hasn't run at all:
- The petrol remains inside that tank, and just there.
- Usually it's emptied and rinsed just where the vehicle stands.
- Being here is the best case — which is the whole point of step one.
If it has been started, even for a second:
- Some petrol has left that tank by now, passed through the filter, and reached the lines.
- Run it farther and the petrol reaches the injectors, having gone through your pump first.
- The job expands with the mileage — lines flushed, filter seen to, sometimes more.
The reason the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure pump as well as your injectors as it passes through them, and petrol does not. Petrol sitting in a tank damages nothing. The components that move it are wearing the moment petrol is being pumped.
What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Durrants
Prepare a little, and the technician finds you rather than circling.
- Where you are. A postcode beginning PO9 6 is the best start.
- The street or the car park. A road name helps — Whichers Gate Road, or wherever you have stopped.
- Describe a car park by what it serves — the one at Lidl, for instance — and it's much easier to find.
- Make and model of the car, and the fact it's a diesel.
- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has its own Durrants page.
- The quantity: the receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you had the nozzle in.
- The miles it covered, and how hard, if it ran at all.
- Hire or company car? Some contracts need the owner's authorisation for the work, and getting it before our technicians turn up is faster than afterwards.
Call 0333 366 0103 next. Email works as well if it can wait, with the car left at home, going nowhere.
Durrants fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait
Hold to these: well-intended help causes the harm during the wait.
- Your safety comes before the vehicle. Somewhere unsafe? Get clear of the traffic and wait away from it. Fine where it stands? Wait with it.
- A helpful passer-by does not crank it. Nor does anyone wanting to check it still works, or rolling it a couple of yards.
- None of that takes the petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not something from your boot. So no additives.
- No DIY clearing. Siphoning petrol into a can by the roadside is hazardous, and it leaves the fuel that has already gone beyond your tank.
- Even your radio or the windows are not worth turning your ignition on for.
Step by step: the fuel drain when our van gets there
- Three questions. What got in, how much, and whether it has run. Those replies shape the job, which is why our quote comes after them and not before.
- Then that tank is drained, and the polluted fuel is taken out.
- Petrol that has shifted beyond that tank sits in the fuel lines if it ran, and the lines are cleaned to clear it.
- Where the car has a usable filter, it's changed; otherwise, cleared.
- The fuel system is primed with fresh diesel.
- The first start on fresh diesel. Once bleeding is complete, the motor is fired up and our technicians check that it runs properly.
We stay until it is running on new diesel. If it has been caught early, permanent damage is very unusual, and the vehicle goes back to normal use straight away.
Once your fuel drain is done: driving around Durrants again
- Nothing special is needed after a start with fresh diesel — normal driving is all.
- Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under your throttle means pull over and ring us back.
- Hold on to your paperwork. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.
- Read the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of the handle.
