Earcroft: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, don't switch your motor on, even for a moment, to shift the vehicle. Stop; leave the vehicle off. Hasn't been run? Then petrol in a diesel tends to be a simple drain-and-flush job wherever the car has stopped — and nothing settles that as much as the next few minutes do. Here's the sequence of things from here, anywhere you're in Earcroft.

Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

First, these — in this order.

  • Pull your keys out. Even the ignition by itself can prime the system, drawing petrol out of the tank to precisely the components it harms, and so keep it off entirely.
  • Topping up with diesel sounds like it dilutes the trouble. It does not: nothing gets out, and your tank simply holds more of the same.
  • Visibility comes before the rest beside moving traffic: switch the hazards on, and only then think about everything else.
  • By hand, not under the motor: that is how it leaves the pump. Ask the forecourt attendants to help you roll, however short the distance.
  • Keep your receipt: the grade and roughly how much are written on it, and they're what our technicians ask for first.

Still on the move when you realised? Come off the M65 at the next junction if that is where you are, under a mile from Earcroft, and pull over somewhere sensible rather than pushing on to the services. Then start at step one.

Earcroft fuel drain: has the motor run yet, or not?

One answer is what everything after this stage depends on.

Motor not run at all?

  • All the petrol remains in that tank, and just there.
  • Where your car sits is usually where this work is done: a drain, then a flush.
  • Being here is the best case — which is the entire point of step one.

If it has been started, even for a moment:

  • Out of the tank, through the fuel filter, into your lines: that's how far that petrol has got.
  • On a longer run it has got to the high-pressure pump as well as your injectors.
  • Lines flushed, your filter sorted, and sometimes more: this job expands as the mileage does.

Diesel keeps your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors lubricated as it runs through them. Petrol offers them nothing, and that is why the line is drawn there. Nothing is damaged by petrol that is just sitting in a tank. The components that shift it are grinding the moment petrol is being pumped.

What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Earcroft

Prepare a little, and the technician finds you instead of circling.

  • BB3 0 plus the rest of the postcode makes the ideal way to start telling us where you are.
  • Give the street — Beech Grove or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.
  • Describe a car park by what it serves — the one at Aldi, for instance — and it's far easier to find.
  • The car. Make, model, plus that it's a diesel.
  • Which was put in counts: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Earcroft has a page just for that. So tell us.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on the receipt — either gives us how much.
  • Has it run? If so, tell us how far it got, and how it was driven.
  • Hire or company car? Some contracts want the owner's authorisation for this work, and sorting it before we get there is faster than after.

Then ring 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home and going nowhere — does the trick too.

While you wait for a fuel drain around Earcroft

During the wait, the harm comes from well-intended help — so these matter.

  • Wait with the vehicle if it is safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere unsafe, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • A kind passer-by doesn't crank it. Nor does anyone wanting to check it still works, or rolling it a couple of yards.
  • Additives stay in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of that petrol out again.
  • A home-made drain leaves the fuel that has already gone beyond that tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is hazardous besides.
  • The ignition stays off. Even for your radio or your windows.

Step by step: your fuel drain when the van gets there

  • Three queries. What was put in, how much, and if it has run. Those replies decide the job, which is why the quote comes after them but not before.
  • Out of your tank comes the polluted blend: that tank is drained.
  • If it ran, the lines are holding petrol that has moved beyond that tank — so they're rinsed.
  • Where your car has a usable filter, it is replaced; otherwise, cleared.
  • The fuel system is primed on clean diesel.
  • Starting it. After the fuel system is bled with fresh diesel, our engineers start it and confirm it runs smoothly.

Only when it is running on fresh diesel do our engineers leave. It's very rare for a car caught soon to be left with long-term damage, and normal driving starts again straight away.

After the fuel drain is done: driving around Earcroft a second time

  • Drive normally. There is nothing unusual to do after it's been started on fresh fuel.
  • The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your signal to stop then call us a second time.
  • The work may come up later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep the paperwork.
  • Next time, check the pump. The label, not the colour of its handle.
