Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Easington?
If you have not fired up the motor yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor needs while the petrol is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not turned over, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has ended up in Easington or the rest of North Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Ring us before everything else starts, so you will see what follows next.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn
- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it drives off — fine for a few miles. People have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start it. And if started, do not rely on it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
- Leave the ignition alone too. Diesel performs two jobs: it ignites, and before it ignites it greases the injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is usually sufficient to prime your system, which pulls this petrol out of the tank and into exactly those components.
- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has never moved is the quickest one to deal with, and we would rather drive to a difficult place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Whitby Road, switch the hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
- Keep your whereabouts prepared before you ring. A postcode that starts TS13 4 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van turning up and our van circling.
- What went in, roughly how much, and also whether your car has fired — these three facts settle the entire visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
How many miles you travelled is what our technicians ask about, not how long your vehicle has been stood — and this is why. Diesel does two tasks on its way through an engine: it burns, and before burning it lubricates that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a quick refuel on the trip in, the realisation coming around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Passat left at Saltburn since quarter past eight means those few miles were travelled with your pump labouring on a fluid stripped of a lot of its protection. Phone us then keep it just where it is.
Easy job, this one — until somebody takes it home. A diesel BMW 3 Series parked by Tiger Inn with petrol in that tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, so park it and phone us once it's light. Expect a question about the trip there, though. Short and cold is exactly where petrol struggles to burn, and what won't burn can slip past the rings and into the sump.
Sitting still, it gets no worse. The pump is not turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Blackgill Wood in that diesel Peugeot 308 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the motor to find more of that.
Leave the Dacia Duster near All Saints and ring us. We are firm about not driving on since a wearing pump loses, and what it gives off passes on with your fuel to the injectors downstream.
Hire car or company car? Phone them before you call us — some agreements want the hire firm to approve the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it after that. Then phone us about the Audi A6 by Saints Joseph and Cuthbert, and don't worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Almost nobody can, in a car they collected two days ago, and our technicians work it out there. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mixture, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.
Can petrol be taken from a diesel at the forecourt?
The job starts at a forecourt, typically. Quite often the work finishes on site too. Our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the site's permission, and so if you're still at BP that is typically where this drain gets done.
Before your engine has run — a forecourt is the one place it ends up stopped. Our technicians can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that sucked fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to go past that tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the keys are what determine that.
Move it out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they normally will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Rolling the car four spaces doesn't justify starting the motor.
Places we serve around Easington
The same rounds take us to Boulby, East Loftus, Loftus, Roxby and Liverton Mines besides Easington, which is a coastal village.
Our technicians do come. Those names above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all places around North Yorkshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Phone to ask rather than presuming, especially if you are on the boundary or somewhere your phone can't find.
The map shows the area the page includes. The lot is ground our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never drive the car anywhere.
Broken down at the kerbside in Easington
Not everybody has the opportunity to pull in somewhere suitable. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Grinkle Lane since you noticed after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it's the normal kind.
Okay where you are? Stay beside it. Not safe? Step out and clear of it. Never fire up the motor to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the system. However tricky the location, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for the vehicle than pressing on.
So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles
under 50 miles from Easington, your A1(M) is what counts now. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Take the next junction that is sensible, stop there, and do not start it to move it. It changes what our engineers bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer drive — anything near the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors.
Where is Easington?
Easington is a small village on the north-east coast of England, situated in North Yorkshire, with a population of around 870 people. Easington sits at an elevation of 143 metres, overlooking the coastline, and is characterised by semi-detached housing. Easington is located near other villages such as Boulby, East Loftus, and Loftus, and is approximately 32 miles from the city of Sunderland. Easington is a relatively remote village, being over 200 miles from London.
Once our engineers reach you around Easington: what happens
- Our engineers check what went in, how much, and if the motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
- Your tank gets drained of everything.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.
- The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
- When it is fired up, our technicians make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.
Then it's ready to pull away. Everything is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.
Easington AdBlue removal is a separate matter
The fault is not the same, though the opening rule is — do not start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and build-up instead.
Both are ours. There is a separate Easington page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Easington
Our technicians can't put one price on this page frankly, because this job is not one job. What changes it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.
- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the vehicle is, and whether a van can safely reach and work on it.
A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.
Easington drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Easington?
Yes, and it is where a large part of this work takes place. We work at Hinderwell Service Station and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. What determines how much work is needed is whether that mix has been drawn through the system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?
Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable a lot more commonly than drivers assume.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to remain off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. It belongs to a different fault from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
There's no need to take it to a main dealer, because we drain and clean your car wherever it is.
You, and the vehicle, still together?
Leave the engine turned off.
If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
