East Linton: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across East Linton and the remainder of East Lothian. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. While the motor has not yet been started and the fuel is still inside that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much went in. Our team will tell you what your next step is. Phone — that happens before everything else.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Never start the car. Fired up regardless? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually will not run, and so the person stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off normally, for several miles. Drivers get that reversed. It's not all right — your fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the car's ignition stays off as well — switch it on and you commonly prime your system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for just those components.
  • Never water down it. Diesel tipped on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Sit tight if it is sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on School Road, anywhere — an awkward spot for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Have your position prepared before you ring. A postcode that starts EH40 3 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van turning up and the van circling.
  • Three details shape the full visit: the fuel you tipped in, the rough volume of it, and if it has been turning since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Don't drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through that high-pressure fuel pump in real volume on the drive in, and the drive back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Call us — the platform is fine. There's no need to stand over the Renault Megane outside the nearest station whilst the work gets done, and we would much rather talk to you tonight than find out on Monday.

Easy, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at easy throttle draws very little of it. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Passat somewhere around East Linton, a boot loaded with shopping, and you stranded at Tesco — ring us. Exiting the bay is not worth another start. Your tank gets emptied where it stands, the lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and you head home.

Shift the car out of the gateway and fix it later — that's what a passer-by will say, and it's wrong. Parked on the zig-zags by the local primary school, a wrongly fuelled diesel Audi A4 is a nuisance and nothing worse. Fired up three more times for politeness, it is no longer a tank issue but a fuel system one, because priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes through the fuel filter towards the pump. Let people moan. Give us a call.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the close-fitting components that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the further a diesel Ford Kuga travelled, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that drive to East Linton Park went, then, and your tank is where to look. Stop somewhere safe, switch off and ring us.

What happens next is the issue. The engine immediately draws the petrol still sitting in your filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put clean diesel in, somebody sure of themselves will tell you — and that suggestion is half right, as do it to a diesel Hyundai Tucson parked up, East Linton Library say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound reasonable. Ring us instead. Our technicians flush the system and take the fuel filter off where the car has a workable one, and that is the difference between the vehicle being put right and the car simply starting.

Clearing petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

Much of the job begins at a forecourt, so a good chunk of it is completed on site. Still at Tesco? Then that is typically where it gets done. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the site.

At a garage, it gets halted with the engine never run, and no place else does that. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and your lines as well as the tank. That is still not a disaster, and our technicians deal with it where your car stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

The attendants will generally happily push the vehicle away from the pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing. Moving it four bays does not warrant cranking the engine.

Places we cover in East Linton

Phantassie, Preston, Markle, Traprain, Knowes — each of those on the runs that bring us across to East Linton as well, a riverside town.

We do come. The names above are just the closest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all places in East Lothian, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Close to a boundary, or anywhere the satnav struggles with? Contact us and enquire instead of presuming.

The ground this page includes sits on the map. We work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and the car doesn't need to travel to us.

East Linton: stuck wherever you parked

Not everybody has the chance to pull in anywhere suitable. Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Stories Park because you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call so often that it is the normal kind.

Remain beside the vehicle while it's sensible to wait in it, yet out of it when it isn't. Do not fire it up to get to a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that blend deeper into the fuel system. A van coming to a tricky spot is no bother for us, and it's much better for your car than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has rolled

This is where the local M8 comes into it — under 50 miles away from East Linton. A misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they come are normally lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

Come off at the next sensible junction, turn off, and never restart the car to move it. It alters what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors.

East Linton itself

East Linton is a town situated on the River Tyne in East Lothian, with a population of around 1879 people. East Linton has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are predominant, and the town is located near several smaller communities, including Phantassie and Preston. East Linton sits at an elevation of 24 metres, close to the coast and approximately 20 miles from Edinburgh. East Linton is part of the wider East Lothian area, which is known for its rural landscapes and scenic coastline.

What our engineers do when our technicians get to you in East Linton

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers alter what the work really is.
  • Out goes the contaminated fuel.
  • What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what started the issue, so the fuel lines get purged and your filter cleared.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • It's run with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running smoothly.

From that point, you're ready to pull away. There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it is spotted early, lasting damage is very unusual.

A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in East Linton

Do not fire it up: that opening instruction stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself. Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and deposits in its place.

AdBlue removal around East Linton has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. Our engineers cover both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around East Linton?

One number wouldn't be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much that tank can hold.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and whether it has run. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel questions from East Linton motorists

Fuel drains on a East Linton petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this takes place. Often, provided the site consents: JET, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something we answer there and then.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether your engine has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving takes the problem along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Still with your car?

Do not turn your engine on again.

Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more regularly than drivers assume.
