Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in East Perry? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over East Perry and the remainder of Cambridgeshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When your engine has not yet been started and the fuel is still in the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Phone before everything else happens, so you'll know what comes next.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Do not crank it — and don't trust it if it does start. Here is the thing people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel usually just will not run, so the person stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, idles and drives away just fine for a few miles. It isn't okay. It's wearing the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition remains off also — switch it on and you commonly prime that system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for just those parts.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay still if it is safe to. Hazards on, motor off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Bakers Way, anywhere — an awkward location for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a motor that never moved.
  • Have your position ready before you call. A postcode that starts PE28 0 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van turning up and the van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three points — what got in, roughly how much, and if the motor has been run. The replies shape everything that happens next.

Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel at the forecourt?

Much of this work begins at the pump, which means a fair portion of it gets done on site. Still at Shell? Then that's typically where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the owner.

Nowhere other than the forecourt can the mistake be spotted with your motor still unrun. The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the key settle how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still sort it out where the vehicle sits.

Away from the pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the vehicle. Worth it. Cranking it for four vehicle lengths? No.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in East Perry

East Perry and the areas near it

As a village, East Perry has a frequent call, and the villages round about come along on the same run: West Perry and Dillington, Grafham and Staughton Green, Staughton Highway.

Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and most places around Cambridgeshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Contact us to ask rather than presuming — county lines especially, and wherever the satnav tends to get wrong.

The patch this page includes is on the map. Our technicians work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle does not need to travel to us.

Every restart primes the fuel lines and pulls more petrol through your filter then into your pump. So a wrongly fuelled diesel Mercedes C-Class on the zig-zags by Great Staughton Primary Academy is a hassle, whereas the same car started three more times to be polite is a fuel system instead of a tank. Someone will advise you to move the vehicle out of that gateway and fix it later. Don't. Leave it, let them grumble, then call us.

It will start. It will drive off just fine. That is the trouble, as a diesel on a diluted tank acts normally while wearing the components its fuel should be protecting. So no, never chance the journey home from Wheatsheaf — leave the Dacia Duster then phone.

Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting components it flows through, and petrol thins it. That's the entire mechanism, and it accounts for the ordinary Crow Spinney call: a diesel Audi A3 that went out there without a murmur and came back down on power, rough at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when your fuel thins, pressure that should build and stay built starts leaking past clearances instead, and your engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built around. None of that is the engine failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it's your fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is put right.

Emptying the Ford Kuga, changing your filter where there is a serviceable one, rinsing the lines, putting fresh fuel through the entire circuit: that's the job, and it is shaped by the worst of it sitting in the fuel lines instead of in your tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from near Trinity Village Baptist Church — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can park next to without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest place we work, so the location itself is rarely the trouble. A tight parking spot is better than a car driven somewhere more convenient.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the car — some agreements demand it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, phone us about your diesel Citroen C3 near Perry. You'll not know how full your tank was. Scarcely anybody does, two days into a motor, and it gets worked out there anyway. Our engineers ask since the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger blend than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is designed to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor rattles and smokes and flattens off.

Stuck on the kerbside around East Perry

The chance to pull in somewhere sensible does not fall to everybody. If you realised after setting off and finished up on the verge of East Perry, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that is a normal call for us instead of an unusual one.

Clear of the car while it is not sensible to wait inside, with it when it is. Never fire up the engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the system. A van heading to an awkward location is no bother for us, and it is a lot better for the car than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has gone

The local A1(M) is the one which matters now, and it sits under 10 miles from East Perry. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Come off at the next safe junction, turn off, and don't start the vehicle to move it. Long run? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it alters what goes in our van.

All about East Perry

East Perry is a village situated on the lakeside in Cambridgeshire, with a relatively low elevation of 55 metres. East Perry lies near the larger city of Cambridge, approximately 19 miles away, and is also close to other nearby places such as West Perry and Grafham. East Perry has a population of around 1199 people and predominantly features flat housing. East Perry is located within the Eastern region of England, about 54 miles from London.

What happens when our technicians reach you in East Perry

  • The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.
  • Away goes the polluted mixture.
  • What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what started the trouble, so the lines get flushed and the filter cleared.
  • The system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • We start the car and confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That has your car ready to set off. All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in East Perry is a distinct problem

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is the same — don't start the vehicle — yet this fault is not. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate East Perry page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in East Perry

Our technicians can't put one number on this page honestly, because this job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much your tank holds.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. If it's not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from East Perry drivers

I'm on a forecourt in East Perry. Can you drain it here?

A good part of this work happens there, so yes. Our technicians work at Applegreen and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run matters far more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable far more commonly than motorists assume.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not a change, and so a drain and flush carried out properly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate fault. So no. The pump still has to live with it, since that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Switched off is the way the car stays.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
