Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in East Whitburn? Don't Start It

Don't start your engine. If the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not yet been started, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that's determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they are, all over East Whitburn and the rest of West Lothian, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Our engineers shall show you what the following step is. Contact us — this happens before anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually not run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a couple of miles. People have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never start the car. And having started, never depend on it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the ignition is left off too — flick it on and you usually prime that system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for precisely those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes — so don't tip diesel on top to weaken it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Main Street, anywhere — an odd place for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a car that never shifted.
  • Our van showing up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning EH47 0, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you call.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, approximately how much, and if your car has started. Those three details decide your whole job.

Never run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through the high-pressure pump in real quantity on the trip in, and the way back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Ring us — the platform is fine. There is no need to stand over your Renault Megane at Armadale whilst the work gets done, and our team would much rather talk to you tonight than learn on Monday.

If you have put petrol in your diesel Volkswagen Tiguan around East Whitburn and you are now stranded at Sarkar Asian Supermarket with a boot packed with shopping, phone. Don't fire it up a second time to leave the spot. Our technicians will come out to you, clear the tank, clean the fuel lines and put clean diesel in so you can head home. A mile or so at easy throttle draws very little fuel, so these are usually the simple ones.

The pump isn't turning, and so whatever your diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Hens Nest Wood, none of that is happening now. Nothing gets worse whilst it sits. Take your time over this — but don't drive it home to buy any.

Turn off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — by Mining Memorial or anywhere at all. Clattering, a ragged idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a misfuelled diesel Audi A6 telling you what's wrong.

Cleared, not cleared — that is what a diesel Ford Kuga which got as far as Brucefield Church needs. Running a diesel puts that mix into your filter, the lines, the pump and its rail, none of which empties with the tank, so by now the tank holds the smaller part of the trouble.

At a forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

Forecourts are where the job mostly begins, and where a fair share of it finishes. Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's permission, and so if you're still at BP that's generally where this drain gets done.

No place but a forecourt can it be stopped with the engine still cold. Our technicians can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past that tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

The attendants will generally offer to roll the car away from the pump so the next driver can get through. That's worth doing. Firing the car to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Do we reach your corner of East Whitburn?

East Whitburn is a village, and so we head out to it and to the areas by it on the usual runs: Blaeberryhill, Croftmalloch, Whitburn, Standhill and Blackburn.

Our engineers still come. The names above are only the closest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all locations around West Lothian, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Close to a border, or anywhere a satnav misreads? Phone and enquire instead of presuming.

The ground this page includes appears on our map. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is ground we cover, and none of it asks the car to come to us.

Broken down by the roadside around East Whitburn

Not everybody gets the chance to pull over anywhere safe. Set off, then realised? Landed by the verge on Almond Square, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.

Out of the motor when it's not wise to be inside, with it when it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere handier and the blend goes further into the system with every mile driven. However difficult the location, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than driving on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

under a mile out of East Whitburn, the M8 is what matters here. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they arrive are normally a drop in power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a clean stop.

Take the first exit that is safe, stop there, and never start the vehicle to reposition. It alters what our engineers bring, so say so when you phone: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

Our call-out around East Whitburn, step by step

  • The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of it, and whether your engine has run.
  • The tainted fuel comes out of your tank.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
  • Your system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • The motor is started and checked to be sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

That has it ready to pull away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been caught soon, and as all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in East Whitburn is a distinct matter

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is the same — do not start the car — but the issue isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal in East Whitburn has its own page with the details — including why it's often the more serious of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in East Whitburn?

Honestly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. The job varies. Here is what changes it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in East Whitburn

Fuel drains on a East Whitburn petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Our technicians attend Shell and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the site's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It is recoverable far more commonly than people assume, even though driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. That tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.

Standing next to it?

The motor remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. Cold and still, a motor is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
